Walked by the magazine rack in the grocery store and was surprised to see an
interview with Nanci in the latest issue, 45, with Springsteen on the cover.
I won't spoil it by telling you why her stepfather wanted to buy a banjo
when she first started playing.

I just finished reading "Clock Without Hands." Has there been any talk
as to what prompted this as NG's choice for a title for her new CD? That
would be an interesting conversation.

How can we get a copy of ROCKRGIRL?

I can't wait for the new CD.

Hi Molly,

I would wonder if her battles with cancer have anything to do with it, such
as the last cd opened with 'wall of death', and this one is Clock Without
Hands, and the line in it, that stands out to me, is "I'm just tickin and
that's all"........

See ya

A public, private note to Steve Robertson -- center spread aside, the
current issue of "Fiddlin' Around - The Journal of American Roots Music" is
superb. Great reviews and previews, and I applaude your editorial stance:

"Radio programmers take note! We
are going to support our favorite
artists, no matter what you are
pushing. Either get on the band
wagon or watch your station go
 down the drain."

You tell 'em, Steve.

Thanks Tony, i was wondering who was going to tally
up. This Nanci Griffith message "tree" is turning out
to be way cooler than i first imagined. With that
first deluge of mail i thought "oh no" and wanted off,
but in a couple short weeks i've begun to look forward
to opening my email each day. And since there are a
couple Nanci albums i haven't yet heard (because i
haven't had $ to special order) i've become familiar
with your names who voted for songs i love. Therefore
i paid attention to your other choices which i haven't
yet heard, and i'm going to order no less that 3 cds
with my next paycheck. i can't wait to hear new (to
me) Nanci music, and I thank y'all (all 36 of you!)
for helping make the choice. eventually i'll hear it
all. Keep those interesting msgs and comments coming;
you people are great! annabelle

Hi there.

This seems to be coming up from time to time:

>Is there anyone on this beloved list that has every song that or
>almost every song that Nanci has done other than the ones on her regular
>releases. I am talking about tracks from compilations, soundtracks, and
>where she appears on other artists albums.

I think my discography is pretty complete -- including every b-side, movie
soundtrack, non-album compilation, guest appearance on another person's
album, remix, etc. I even have a list of songs she's written but hasn't
ever released.

Go to:

        http://www.eden.infohwy.com/~dgrant/nanci.html

I try to keep the discography up-to-date, but please let me know if there's
anything you know of that I'm missing...

David,

Two more "Unauthorized CDs" for your web page:

Come Spring In Norway.

Inventing America. This is from the OVT tour in the UK.

If you want, I can pass along more details, though I'm sure there are some
NanciNetters who know more of the background of these than I do.

This CDR is made from the digital satelite BBC broadcast at early December
1998 from the first Barbican concert of the OV2 tour in November 1998. You
can find the dates and pics at http://fly.to/nanci. This is not the
complete show but a compilation of the BEEB. There is also a double CDR with
a audience recording and I thought this was from the second night. I have to
buy a new CDR- storage, because the piles of CDRs are stored under the table
not ordered.

I stumbled across someone who is pretty much brand new and have really
enjoyed her first CD. She is Jen Hamel, www.jensongs.com. Since
joining this group I have tried (and enjoyed) other artists that some of
you have mentioned, so I thought I would pass on one that I like. I
think there are some samples at the web site, or if any of you use
Morpheus, you can search for her songs there and if I'm signed-on, you
should be able to see them and try them out.

I'm really looking forward to Nanci's new CD, and I read today that Lucy
Kaplansky has a new CD coming September 11.

It was great to have a posting from someone else in England, (I'm sorry I've

lost the page with your name). Many of us here are looking forward to
seeing Nanci when she comes over, I have my tickets for The Lowry Centre in
Salford and my daughter has hers for London. I was surprised however to
see someone who doesn't like the track "I think I'll Go To Heaven" (from
Late Night Rio Grande). Strangely I have this in my car at the moment and
yesterday repeated the same track about 6 times in a row. In fact I think
a speed camera took my picture whilst I was singing along so now I'm waiting

for the letter. I don't know if Nanci wrote the song but the words are
just so right for her:

"If I Can Be Someone Who Never Needs a Disguise,
Maybe I'll go to Heaven. Heaven is in your eyes".

Still as they say it wouldn't do for us all to be the same. Come on England
fans, keep writing. By the way I'm following a soap on TV called "The West

Wing". It is set in The White House and is really great. Channel 4 on
Tuesday nights.

Subject: NN: re: Fred Neil RIP (NEC)
   From: PRobin5478@aol.com
   Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2001 12:54:39 EDT

I just read of the death of FRED NEIL, one of the leading voices of the Folk
Revival of the 1960s. Best known for his compositions "Everybody's Talkin'"
(the theme from Midnight Cowboy, sung by Nilsson), "The Other Side of This
Life," (Jefferson Airplane, the Youngbloods), "The Dolphins," (Tim Buckley)
and "Candyman," (Roy Orbison), Fred was one of the greatest singers of our
time. His deep, rich baritone was unforgettable and his 12-string guitar
playing was strong and almost orchestral. He seldom played live after the
60s and shrank from the limelight, preferring to stay in Florida, refusing
interviews and requests to play. (Presumably, he could live off the
"Everybody's Talkin'" royalties.) He fought drug and alcohol addictions,
succumbing, finally, to cancer at the age of 64.

He doesn't have too many albums out. Collector's Choice catalog put out a
2-CD set of his "Dolphins," "Sessions," and "The Other Side of This Life"
albums - a good place to start. His classic "Bleecker and McDougal" album I
could find only as a Japanese import.

He was a mentor to many: Bob Dylan and John Sebastian played harp for him
David Crosby Stephen Stills and so many others.

I was lucky enough to see him play at the long-gone Pink Elephant in
Woodstock. Fred was drunk (as usual) but when he sang, everything melted
away but the Music and the Voice. It's a shame he never got the recognition
he deserved.

In any case, try to find his music and listen. You'll never forget it.

Long live Fred Neil!

Peter Robinson

I think it also deserves mention that Emmylou has found a way to
successfully work within the Nashville Country Music establishment in order
to achieve her goals. She obviously has a knack for getting along with
people, even her ex-band members speak very highly of her, a rarity for any
artist. She's stayed in good with the boys on 16th avenue yet managed to
avoid the trendiness that plagues commercial country.

Speaking of which, it's nice to see so many artists rediscover their
"roots." Just keep in mind, it's the $$ which were put in their eyes by the
success of "O' Brother" that's spawned the current urge to purge. I'm
sticking with real roots artists, it's nice for the big boys and girls to
drop in, but my guess is they'll drop right back out as soon as the weather
changes.

All my best,
-Shawn

Hey, don't forget about Sam Bush! Emmy had a hand in that also. If
nothing else the women has helped some of the greatest musicians around
get a career established. I do believe that she and Nanci are buddies
and my personal opinion is that Nanci is very comfortable (sometimes not
so maybe) with her "star" status as it is. [But just think, if only Eric
Taylor had kicked the bucket, they both would be world famous---(that
was sarcasm, I'm a HUGE ET fan and am glad his bucket still runneth
over)]--- I love Nanci Griffith's music, and quite frankly would hate
to see the quality suffer because she suddenly got LOTS of airtime. I
mean, Emmy is played primarily on country stations (only now when
someone request one, or it's "oldie" hour-GAUD). Country music RADIO is
SOOOO not country and it would pain me to see Nanci thrown in there with
Shania Twain (hey she's purty, but that ain't country). So cheers to
Emmy and all of her accomplishments. I'll take Nanci just like she is.

I found the latter one in a London music shop last year or the year
before. I already had the Flyer one. I'm also not aware of any other
books but I seem to recall seeing music books of some of the
Introduction To series (Perhaps the Nick Drake one?). Perhaps we'll
see one for Wings To Fly and a Place To Be.

   From: Ron Hennessy (rhennesy@coserv.net>
   Date: Tue, 10 Jul 2001 18:37:45 -0500

Hey y'all,

For anyone living in the Dallas area, Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines are
playing this coming Friday at the following location:

Uncle Calvin's Coffeehouse
Northpark Presbyterian Church
9555 N. Central Expressway
Dallas TX 75231

(214)363-0044

http://www.unclecalvins.org/§§

Concert starts at 8:00 (with opening act), and doors open at 7:30. I plan
to be there for the first concert I've been able to go to in too long a
time. (Can't beat the ticket price of 12 bucks!)

Terri is an excellent young country/folk singer/songwriter from San Antonio
TX. Lloyd is a superlative steel guitar player from Dallas, maybe best
known internationally as the steel guitarist on the Dixie Chicks recordings,
and father of Natalie Maines.

http://www.terrihendrix.com/

Below is Uncle Calvin's blurb:

"These folks will knock you over... infectious fun!

July 13 Terri Hendrix with Lloyd Maines ($12)

We've been raving about this new-to-the-scene Texas songwriter, and our
prediction of her ascent into prominence
is coming true. Her folk-pop-country swing songs have humor, compassion,
insight and energy, all delivered with an
expressive soft drawled voice. Terri's unpretentious down home persona and
her upbeat dynamic is gaining her
thousands of new fans coast to coast. The awesome guitar/dobro/pedal steel
master, Lloyd Maines, joins Terri for this unforgettable show.

Opening Jeff & Vida - Great front porch music with spark!"

I hope to see other Nancinetters there. I'll be wearing my "Blue Roses"
T-shirt.

Ron Hennessy
