Subject: NN: St. Petersburg Nanci Fest!
   From: Ljbracken@aol.com
   Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001

I have lurked here on the NanciNet for some time and enjoyed reading
the posts. Just have not had much to add. However, a few random notes
regarding the Nanci G and the BMO St. Petersburg Concert. I attended with
my wife-to-be and we enjoyed it very much. I had not seen Nanci in many
years: Dallas, after maybe "Little Love Affairs" at that funky theater
sort of across from Poor David's on Lower Greenville. I am certainly
older!

The opening act in St. Pete was actually called Vesica Pisces (horrible
name!) and I thought they were pretty good, a bit cautious about being put
out front of Nanci and the BMO fans! For some transplanted Salem,
Massachusetts kids, now of southern California, on a stage in decedent and
wrinkled old St. Petersburg, Florida...oh well-they did o.k....they were
fine.

I thought Nanci and the BMO were outstanding. I was amazed at how many
of my favorites they played (anybody actually make a list?) But after
opening with Across the Great Divide, they played everything I like
(except St.Olaf's Gate)
-Love at the Five and Dime
   -From A Distance-Flyer
   -Gulf Coast Highway
   -Outbound Plane
   -Wall of Death
   -Hard Life
   -This Heart
-If I had a Hammer (note: for an old folkie like me, it brought things
full circle to hear Nanci talk about Pete Seeger and Lee Hayes, along with
Luscious Jackson! Made me want to get my long-neck five-string out and
frail!)
-Speed of the Sound of Loneliness
   -Well, That's All Right
-One Blade Shy (for Dubya's little brother Jeb Bush!)

Plus songs from the new CD
   -Clock
-Traveling Through this Part of You
   -Where Would I Be

And her comments about Florida's flawed election and Florida governor
wanna-be, former Vietnam Ambassador Pete Peterson, that she just played
for in Vietnam, gave me a good feeling that social consciousness is alive
and well! What? Three encores? I actually lost count...Hey, I may go dig
out my LBJ button, too! I was very pleased! What a good evening in St.
Pete and she never comes to Florida, so maybe some time on the beach was
good for her! There were people in the audience from all over Florida!
And Nanci was in good spirits, smiling, laughing, jumping! The BMO sound
was good, tight, on. A small hum in the sound system-but they pressed on!

And then there she was last night with the BMO on Late Night with
David Letterman! And Dave saying that if "you could buy only one CD this
year, buy this one!" Cool! And the CD is good. I particularly (again, us
survivors of the great folk scare of the '60's!) like the John Stewart
songs she selected. So, it has pretty much been a Nanci G and the BMO
Week! And a good one! V and me loved it!
Come back to Florida, Nanci!

She did the Paul Carrick song 'Where Would I Be'. Sure is cute to see what
a fan Dave L. is.

I just picked up the cd today and have just put it on, so no comments yet.
It was interesting to me that in the record store, Gillian Welch was up
front on the 'Rock New Releases' rack (along with Lucinda). Nanci, of
course, was way in the back of the store in the country section.

Off to listen now,
Tricia

Got a request. Did anyone out there record the
Letterman appearance who would be good enough to copy
it or send me the tape so I can copy it? I'll happily
pay all the costs.

I was suffering from brain lock and for some reason
recorded Leno. Imagine my horror.

thanks in advance,

Ok, I'm back already. Reading the liner notes and see that Lee is singing
on many cuts, playing on some and is listed as member of BMO. Cool - keep
her there, Nanci. Don't let her get away.

Hi folks: Nanci will appear in N.Y. at the Beacon theater at eight
o'clock. It finally became official and I called up Ticketmaster as soon
as they went on sale Monday. She was great on Letterman and I think that
guy loves her as much as I do. I listened to Clock Without Hands several
times and it grows on me. It may become one of my favorites or more. That
review that Sarah sent to us by Arthur Wood was terrific. Oh, if more
critics would spend that much time pondering an album before writing about
it. This last batch of reviews was great also. I am sure there will be
some negative ones-some critics abhor that someone is able to write such
meaningful lyrics and sing them so beautifully. And look like an
angel. We love her and cherish her. Jim

Does anyone have an extra ticket for Nanci's concert at the Denver Botanic
Gardens on August 15, 2001? The tickets sold out to the organization's
members before even going on sale to the public. It has been a few years
since I have seen Nanci perform live, and if I don't see her soon, I'm
probably going to go through a very difficult withdrawal.
Write to me at bsohnen@hotmail.com if you can help. Thanks.

   From: Halesbop@aol.com

I found it interesting that the Ann Arbor Best Buy had Gillian's cd on
sale for $12.99 (and listed in the weekly ad) and Nanci was quietly sold
at $15.99. Neither was prominently displayed, but they had a good supply
of both this evening when I bought them.

But the first brand-spanking new release I got today was awaiting in my
mailbox when I got home from work. Jenna Mammina'a second record, "Meant
To Be" also was officially released today and I had pre-ordered it when
she was in town this spring. I know Jenna has a few fans on this list, and
like the two women above she has come up with another brilliant record,
surely one to be reckoned with when my best-of-year list is compiled.
Highly recommended, but probably not easy to find yet.

Residing right here in Foat Wuth I know the details on Nanci's dates
in April 2002. These are performances with the Fort Worth Symphony
"Pops" Orchestra.

They normally play on Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night and
Sunday afternoon. The Bass Hall was built about four years ago and is
probably the most beautiful and acoustically perfect venue you will ever
see.

I'll be there!

As usual, the inlay cover for CWH is just beautiful.
I love the picture on the back of the booklet, with
that sash she's wearing and the lovely light blue
background, and she looks simply gorgeous lol.

I love that song about Dicky Chapelle, I definitely
think there's a poem or two in that subject.

Immediately after work yesterday, I hopped in the jalopy and set my
sites for the city, drooling profusely at the thought that within half an
hour I would have the new Nanci release in my grubby little paws. When I
got to Best Buy, I searched new releases, best sellers, folk, rock & pop,
country, and even took a chance on easy listening. Finally, thinking maybe
there had been a last minute delay in releasing the cd, I asked a
salesperson if they had gotten Nanci's new CD in Tuesday. She said yes,
but they had only ordered eight copies. You've got to be kidding!!!!
Best Buy ordered only eight copies of Nanci Griffith's CD for the southern
part of St. Louis???!!!
Peeved, but still yet determined, I drove across town to a place I
rarely go to - Borders. There was a special rack FILLED with Clock Without
Hands. Needless to say I am now a Borders convert after such a traumatic
circumstance - I mean not being able to get Nanci's new CD the day it
comes out? Perish the thought!
This CD is different, IMHO, from anything else she has done, but it is
wonderful in its own right - a must have for any music fan. I agree with
David Letterman "If you purchase only one CD this year ... "

Hello all!

Does anyone have any information about the KQED TV
Taping in Washington, DC on September 20th? Will that
be treated like a concert with tickets sold through
Ticketmaster? I know that it's not listed on the
Ticketmaster website as of now. Any info would be
appreciated. Thanks!

   From: Bill Page (bpage3@yahoo.com>

Hey folks,

I know we're concentrating on Nanci's new release, and well we should be
doing. But this morning I heard something on the radio that may also
interest some of us.

On National Public Radio's "Morning Edition" this morning, the host
introduced a short segment with a comment about the recent death of Eudora
Welty. What followed was a four minute segment that was actually a preview
Of the following series:

>Southern Series Preview
>This week, NPR's David Molpus begins a Morning Edition series documenting
>the "New South" through the eyes of its young up-and-coming artists.
> Every Thursday in August, different writers and musicians will take our
> reporters to the places in the South that inspire them. Today, Molpus
> previews the first artist, singer-songwriter Kate Campbell, whose music
> explores the Southern psyche.

Many of us who are Kate fans first learned about her here on the NanciNet.
I don't know who the other "new South" artists are that will be profiled,
but at least they got the first one right!!!

If you don't already have one or more of your car radio buttons
Permanently tuned to an NPR station (and if not, shame on you), you can
find your local station by checking the list available at:
     http://www.npr.org/members/biglist.html

Many of NPR's programs are also available through stations on-line, and
Some of the NPR programming is available through satellite and other
Carriers world-wide. Check out:
     http://www.npr.org/worldwide/

Finally, NPR's programs are often available in the on-line archives,
usually the next day:
     http://www.npr.org/archives/

Now, back to our regularly scheduled discussion of Nanci's new CD...

When I read Bill's note about the new NPR series, I
thought of Kate. For those of you who are unfamiliar
with Kate's music, you owe it to yourself to give it a
listen. After being a fan for many years, I had the
opportunity to see her in concert a couple of weeks
ago. In spite of my sky-high expectations, she
managed to exceed them in every way. Much like Nanci
I think, she writes about those things familiar and
personal to her. And it shows.

Saw Christina's mention of "A Better Day" by the Continental
Drifters..just got that one myself!

In addition, I lucked into a copy of "Real Day" by Alice Peacock. Wasn't
she mentioned here a while back? Anyone seen her live? I'm on the
booking committee for our coffeehouse here in the Boston area and would
like to know more about her and if she has a following. (We can't afford
to take too many chances on "new" performers!)

..I'm also a fairly recent convert to Melissa Ferrick's work (saw her play
last year at the ROCKRGRL conference and she blew the room away. I can
recommend her as one of the best live acts I've seen), and to Michelle
Malone. Both have devoted hardcore followings, and their own labels. They
tour extensively...I'm going to see Michelle next week at the Bottom Line
here in NYC. I could kick myself for having missed the Continental
Drifters' NY gig, as they DON'T get out that much.
