It sure does sound like this song is based on a "true story" and a
Nanci one, at that, to me. But I'm also thinking that, as true as the
chorus
may be, there's the flip side to it, which Nanci talked about in her concert

here in Minnesota last month. She told us that she needed us and relied on
our strength and love to get through the hard times, struggles with
cancer...that, in her preface to "Where Would I Be?", was very poignant and
heartfelt. So yes, perhaps being a performer does take a bit out of you
each
day, but it also gives back. I am looking forward to listening to this new
Lucy Kaplansky CD soon. She is a gem.

I get playlists sent to me by dj's to help me compile record charts
that I do each quarter and in the last two weeks I have noticed a
dramatic rise in the playing of a Gillian Welch cut off the John
Hartford tribute album. The cut is called "In Tall Buildings."

Stevie Nicks' title track to her latest album "Trouble In Shangri-La"
contains the following verses:

But the promise has been broken
As you walk through the shadow of death
You try to see no evil
But you are so heartbroken
You say, dear God, make it stop!
Before the dawn of separation
Brings up the wind
Rises around you
I hear there's trouble in Shangri-La

I guess we don't believe
That things could go that far
We all believe in people...
That we think believe in God
Somewhere in the night...
Someone feels the pain
The ones who walk away
Try to love again...

In the wake of the terrorist atrocities last week the live music scene,
here in the U.K., has been affected. Country star Chely Wright cancelled
her U.K tour, as did Gillian Welch and David Rawlings and Tom Pacheco.
However Nanci Griffith, Lyle Lovett, Steve Earle (with sister Stacey,
performing as the Earle Family) and Mary Gauthier have all confirmed that
they will still be touring. Hopefully nothing will happen in the coming
weeks to force them to change their minds.

thanks to everyone who sent me kind regards. my cousin's husband is
NYPD, and he is fine. several of my friends who live in NYC are safe,
but a couple of acquaintances are more than likely in the rubble with
their turn out gear still on. i can't begin to tell you what that
means. when i saw the images of the burned out ambulances and engines,
and the patrol units crushed flat, it just killed me. thanks for
posting the NYPD Lieutenant's words. if anyone in law
enforcement/emergency services would like to drop a line, feel free.
quilt sounds like a great idea, BTW. i was Jesuit educated; our
school's motto was "Men for Others". Father Mychael (sp?) certainly
exemplifies what St. Ignatious (sp?) represents. listening to alot of
Eric Johnson and AC/DC of all things to get my mind off of it. My t.v
has been on "Cartoon Network" all week. does anyone know how to get a
tape of last Monday's "Letterman Late Show" broadcast? I was on-duty
and missed it and the benefit the other night as well. Blessings from
Austin to all. Hug that dog that found you, Shawn. sounds like
Destiny.

Dave Letterman Show
 (http://www.cbs.com/latenight/lateshow/>
Dan Rather's photo shows up near upper right side of page. Click on it
to get 9/17/01 interview (audio & visual) with RealPlayer. For copies
of the tape, you should be able to leave your information on their
FEEDBACK form at bottom of the page. I'm sure they've had many requests
for that interview.

Hope this helps,

Subject: NN: Shelby Lynne (no NG/KC content)
   From: "John Edward Graveling" (kai21@dial.pipex.com>

I know a good few folks out there are fans of Shelby Lynne. Well I've
just had the privilege of playing her new cd, "Love, Shelby" for the
first time. I have to say it is a very intriguing record. It cuts across
many styles, embodying some soul, "Trust Me", some pop, "Star Broker", and
a couple of great rock tracks, "Mother" which shakes the foundations and
"Jesus On A Greyhound" which wouldn't sound too out of place on Lucinda's
"Essence". It has much initial appeal, whether it is as deep as "I Am
Shelby Lynne" remains to be seen. On first listen it seems to be aimed at
the mass market, without losing that great individuality that Shelby
possesses. It is due for release, here in the U.K., on Monday 29th
October. The same night as she plays the Shepherd's Bush Empire, in
London. I know nothing of Mercury's plans for the release in the U.S.A.
Last time around we had "I Am" a full six months before the U.S.A., where
the music was the same, but the sleeve was completely different. Such is
the power of those marketing departments!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers,

John Graveling

Speaking of.... it seems Shelby pulled something vaguely familiar yesterday.

She was performing in Golden Gate Park (SF) at a fest (Macy Gray, Alannis M,

others). She sang 3 songs, threw part of the mic stand in to the audience,
stormed off the stage, not to be heard from again. I guess it happens....

Subject: NN: Recommendation

I can't think of another recommendation, to buy a album, I have made, but
I am making one now. Deirdre Flint's 'The Shuffleboard Queens'. You can go
to www.MP3.com, and search under her name, to listen to several full length
songs of hers. Ms. Flint combines a beautiful voice with an enormous sense
of humor. Her music style is listed as folk, but folk/musical comedy/
just plain old damn good listening is what I would list it under.
I wonder if Nanci would ever consider doing an over the top wildly comical
song? How about everyone posting what they think her topic would be if she
did. My pick, to start things off, would be a song entitled..."The Shiner
Bock Beer Made Me Do It!'
I will leave it up to Donate or one of you other lyricists to stick lines
to this title....have fun!

Best,
DJ
