Amazon also had the DVD spelled NANCY (my birthday's next week and I find
Amazon's wish list is a good way of telling people what to buy at their
LOCAL stores).
I emailed Amazon about the typo (they have a special email address just for
that) and it's been changed.

P.S. Still looking for anyone who has a recording of Nanci from the Kate
Wolf Festival (email me privately at mailto:sekrauss@attbi.com - really,
you're under no obligation to start a tree or anything) (and to those
anti-booters, Kate Wolf allows and even encourages recording at the
festival).

Well, I'm not sure that KATE does (maybe in some spiritual
way...), but the festival organizers probably do!

I realize that my buying habits for music have mutated considerably over the
last several years: I almost never go into record stores anymore! I can
think of 3 albums (yes I still call them that) that I've purchased at the
B&N across from my office this year: Dixie Chicks Home, Springsteen's
Rising, and Sheryl Crow's C'mon, C'mon...(and a few copies of Suzzy Roche's
Zero Church that I bought for friends. GREAT ALBUM! GET IT! It's on Red
House Records).
Everything else I've bought online from the label, artist or that highly
useful website CDBaby, or from the artist directly at shows (oh yeah, and
since I review for a few publications, I can often ask for an advance copy
of stuff). I bought the new Nanci online from Rounder, since I try to
support indie labels; bought the new Melissa Ferrick at her last show;
reviewed the new Toshi Reagon (though I would have bought it when I saw her
last show). And yeah, I bought the Kelly Clarkson single from Amazon.com!
Because even hardcore indie supporters have soft spots for cute little girls
from Texas who can sing.
Frankly, paying shipping and handling charges is sometimes preferable to
getting the hairy eyeball from clerks at a superstore when you're asking for
something particularly obscure.

Hi folks: first happy birthday to Cate (and I hope you are feeling better
and have gotten hold of that elusive CD) and my sympathy to Sarah for the
loss of your mother-these are two of my favorite nancinetters who I had met
in Atlanta. Borders used to treat Nanci with a lot more respect when she
was with Electra. This time they had to send someone in the back to get
the CD and DV and two days later they still had not put them on the shelf.
Nanci's CDs previously merited star treatment and bargain prices. They had
ordered 45 copies of Clock and 5 of Winter Marquee.
On the more positive side, I love both the CD and DVD. The DVD is a
marvelous production of a Nanci concert that you can keep on playing. I
play most of my CDs on the DVD player and they sound great. I love hearing
some of those old songs and the Ochs and Townes covers are terrific. I know
that a restaurant owner in Bangor who loves Nanci, but she had never played
her in the restaurant. I bought her a copy of Winter Marquee and she loves
it and sure enough it was being played not only in the restaurant, but wine
store as well. Her daughter, a huge Nanci fan, ripped it open and the rest
was musical history. Our administrative assistant once asked me about Nanci,
has since become a big fan, and now I always hear that lovely music in the
office. She will be getting a copy of the latest for her upcoming birthday.
I continue to spread the word-nancinetters will soon rule the universe. You
think?

Hello Nanci Fans,
I must say that I, too, am surprised.
I live in San Francisco and I was all gung ho when I left work on the 24th
to purchase both the DVD & the C.D. Lo & Behold I had to go to two stores
before I could find the C.D. I have yet to find the DVD and I'm in SAN
FRANCISCO!!!
Does anyone know why Nanci switched over from Electra back to Rounder?

Hi,
I work at HMV, so I'm going to be a good employee now - you can order the
DVD from us. I thought I was going to be able to pick it off the shelf, but
I don't think many shops are going to rack it (except HMV Blackpool (thanks
to my corruptive influence;-) and possibly the London stores); anyway, I
ordered mine on Tuesday and it arrived today, so it doesn't take too long to
get hold of it, and it's for the UK region, so you don't have to mess around
with your DVD players to play it.
Hope this is some help!

I got my copy of Winter Marquee in the mail today--the rush of joy when I
saw the beautiful little package in the mail, and the emails I saw on the
digest about Bill Lavery at Village Records, reminded me of another time I
got a new Nanci album by mail. Bill sent me a copy of OVOR2 in Burkina Faso,
within a week of it going on sale...amazing. (Imagine how bereft I'd have
been if I'd had to wait for it to hit the local stores!)

I was working in New Zealand when Blue Roses From The Moons was released.
Now some CDs, even of some fairly big acts, don't appear in NZ for *months*
after their US release, so I wasn't holding my breath. But there it was,
very first day that it was available anywhere else! Made me a very happy

Anita- Hope the nancinet can help you out as well as other nanci-netters in
your quest for ONE FAIR SUMMER EVENING !First you should all print this up
you all and SAVE as it may help someone you know down the road .Over here in
CANADA and in the US as well . You are correct in thinking you and us have
different formats .In CANADA and in the US we use NTSC-FORMAT while in the
UK you use PAL-FORMAT .Some photo shops offer a tape-conversion service if
you check their yellow page adds in the phone book.
I have some PRICELESS video that was in PAL - FORMAT but had it converted
for $25.00 . It was sent to me by PAUL ROBERTS who you may know had a good
NANCI WEB SITE over in OSLO NORWAY at one time but has since shut it down
The tape contains very rare footage of NANCI -EARLY YEARS including what
people think was long lost on the cutting room floor .There are clips of her
mother, father ,-great aunt ELLIMAY-(Trouble in these fields) who the song
was written for. There are some early AUSTIN CITY LIMITS shows in their
entirety where she sings LISTEN TO THE RADIO, MARY MARGRET ,ETC
Try running a laser-eye cd cleaner through you stereo also to see if that
helps playback or take it in to have the eye set up a bit at a electronics
store that does repairs but a get a price quote on paper first.

Just to add a little to this note. Everything it says about video formats is
correct. BUT many, if not most, UK video recorders WILL play American format
tapes - look for the letters NTSC on the vcr or in the instruction book: if
it can play NTSC, then it plays US format. You'll also need a television
that supports NTSC format, or you'll have tracking problems and get a
monochrome picture.
So, check whether your vcr/tv can play NTSC tapes. If not, ask yourself if
you want the Nanci video badly enough to buy a new vcr and tv to play it on.
Course you do!

I have not bought this one yet, but the problem may be caused by copy
protection (or correct: errors that the 'normal' CD player corrects, but the
PC player doesn't). At least Sony has issued a few 'CDs' lately, at least
here in Europe, which cannot be played back (or copied) on a computer. On
the back cover it says something like 'cannot be played on PC or Mac'. Is
this the case with 'Winter Marquee'?

I've found the opposite. It will play in the PC CD writer okay but not in
the CD player (x2) or the DVD player, so I'm not sure that's what it is.
There IS a problem though. Silly thing is this type of difficulty puts me
off buying as a legitimate customer - suddenly mp3 files don't appear so
disloyal anymore, at least they play!
Hopefully my on-order DVD will play :-)

From: "Mike Chesman" (chesman@preferred.com>
I can't comment specifically about the Winter Marquee disc, but over the
years I've come across a number of CDs that have a very thin aluminum
coating (almost transparent when held up to a bright light). Others have a
much thicker aluminum layer. I have never had a problem with a cd player
loading those with a thick almost opaque layer, but sometimes had to load a
disc several times in certain players to get a thin layered one to play. In
very, very rare instances I've had to return a thin layer disc for a
replacement as it would not play. The discs with thin layers are less
problemsome with uniform colored labels with limited text. Those with
graphics or photos on the label seem to be more of a problem. My suspicion
is that the laser shines through the aluminum of the disc in the clear areas
whereas it is a little bit more reflective where the aluminum is backed by a
darker color. I have no way to make a quantitative analysis of this but it
has been my general experience that this behavior is real.
Get out a few of your discs that have silver areas showing within the
graphics and hold them up to a bright lamp. You'll be surprised at the
variation in aluminum coating thicknesses. I had one boxed set where the
layer was so thin I didn't even have to hold it up to a light to see through
the cds. Needless to say this set had to be returned for a replacement.
Some players are much more tolerant of these thin layered discs.
Hope this sheds some light on the subject "no pun intended"

Winter Marquee and the copy plays! I will check out my video
