I have read several posts recently about trouble finding Nanci's new CD/DVD
in the stores. Nanci's management office would like to have Rounder Records
address these problems immediately, but need more specific information in
order to do so. If you would please be so kind as to list the name of the
city, store name, and store address in your posts, we can forward that
information to the label. Thank you!
// please send your information directly to Alan. Thanks. [BP]

I've never had problems on my stereo hooked player, but my PC had. I
suddenly experienced problems writing CDRs with a brand I've used many times
before. My CD-writer spit them out again. I tried several discs before I
started to examine the discs, and noticed that against a light I could see
easily through the new disc while the remaining old discs were much darker.
They worked OK on another PC, and also played well on my PC after the have
been written. On the other hand, I some time gets message like claiming it
is a multi-session CD on normal bought CDs which I try to copy. But again,
on another PC it works ok

There seems to have been little comment on the new cd, although I am quite
sure that opinions abound!
Personally, I think it's an excellent album. The sound quality is superb,
and there's a good selection and balance of songs - the highlights for me
are the wonderful rendition of "Boots Of Spanish Leather" and the extremely
catchy new song "Last Train Home", and I never tire of hearing "There's A
Light Beyond These Woods" The dvd is obviously better than the cd - four
extra tracks AND you can watch her singing them all. And doesn't she look
good?
However, one thing that "Winter Marquee" most definitely does not do is give
an accurate representation of a Nanci concert. On the cd in particular
there are virtually no introductions - there is more talking on the dvd
(much of which has been edited From the cd for some reason), but the talk
remains sparse.
As anyone who has seen Nanci on stage will be aware, a great part of the
enjoyment comes From her introductions, and I'm sure that at the actual
Knoxville performance she was a lot more talkative than the recording
suggests. "One Fair Summer Evening" remains the best live album From that
point of view, and although technically - the filming and the sound -
"Winter Marquee" is much the superior, it fails to capture the essential
magic of watching Nanci live.

I enjoyed the CD and the DVD very much. As far as capturing the "feel" of
seeing Nanci in concert, I agree that some more talking would have been
nice. What would have really made it more authentic for me is to see the
credits roll over the exiting crowd with Whiter Shade of Pale
playing...though I suppose that was simply a matter of not have the rights
to do so.

First, let me agree with Mike Barrett on the fact that "Winter Marquee" is
an excellent recording. I also concur with his assessment of the fact that
it does not capture Nanci completely as a performer. I too would have liked
to hear more of the live banter between the songs. Having attended the
concert, even the intro to Gulf Coast Highway was cut drastically on the CD.
The comments were funny and appropriate and should have made the disc. I
knew they wouldn't put all the talking onto the CD or DVD but I was hoping
for a little more.
It was the intros on "One Fair Summer Evening" on TV that first made me want
to see Nanci live. Of the four live appearances I've seen From 1997 to
Date I notice that most songs have had truncated or no introduction. I
realize that Nanci doesn't want to bore her fans with the same old stories
but a little more insight into the new material would be nice. Nanci is as
good a storyteller outside of her songs as within and I think her comments
are very special to her audience.
Don't get me wrong, I love the new CD and the DVD is a terrific item to have
available. Her slightly slower take on "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness"
gives the song a whole new feeling. The live version of "I Wish It Would
Rain," for me, surpasses the original. Many of the songs sound very fresh
as the concert is nearly perfectly recorded. My least favorite tune is
"Last Train Home" but that's not a major flaw and others will probably rave
about it. I think the whole show was a nice balance of the old with the new
and I'm thrilled to have these recordings to remember the night. I don't
think I can give an unbiased assessment of the CD and will have to leave
that to the folks that weren't at the show and can judge the disc on its own
merits.
By the way, notice the subdued and moody lighting on stage on the inside
photo in the audio CD case. That's closer to the way the concert looked
live. If you have the DVD, turn down the brightness on your TV a bit and
you'll get a better re-creation of the event. It was a beautiful set...very
attractively and theatrically lighted.

I have to agree with Mike, I too am surprised about the lack of enthusiasm
for this release. I resisted posting about the CD which I got last week
just to make sure my opinions weren't being clouded by the excitement of a
new release. However, after getting the DVD yesterday, I'm now convinced
that this is Nanci's best release since Flyer.
> However, one thing that "Winter Marquee" most definitely does

> On the cd in particular there are virtually no introductions
The CD is heavily edited compared to the DVD, the DVD is a little strange in
that most of the earlier tracks seem to have had their introductions left in
while the later tracks have no introduction at all. Having said that I
found that at the last couple of concerts I've seen the introductions have
often been long and rambling and distracted From the music, very
different From the gentle stories on One Fair Summer Evening.
I am really very happy with both CD and the DVD, I think owning both is a
good thing. The DVD offers much more than the CD alone and I imagine that
lots of people will buy both, I certainly don't feel ripped off having done
so. Both the audio and video recordings are of the highest quality and
Nanci and the BMO give probably the finest performance I've seen or heard.
GCH in particular is, as you might expect, the definitive version.
Incidentally, for those in the UK that are having trouble getting the DVD,
I've previously recommended a couple of people get Winter Marquee DVD mail
order From Country Music Store, I ordered mine on Monday and it arrived
yesterday. The DVD is region 2 so will play fine on European equipment
without you having to make any modifications. The CD seems widely available
in high street stores here.

Seems that no matter what label Nanci shows up on this is a common happening
that someone on each project should catch. The audiophile re-master of the
"Last of the True Believers" CD on Classic Records has the name spelling
correct on the cover, the spine, and back of the jewel case. On the disc
itself its printed in a bold font "Nancy Griffith" Whoops again!

D'OH -- Hate it when that happens.
I have been so enamored with watching "Nanci" that I missed that detail.
And, so did Rounder!

hehe
you know what's really funny? I'm so used to spelling Nanci the way Nanci
does that when ever I have to spell it I naturally now do so with an I
instead of Y. heh. People always have to correct me. :) Ms. Griffith has
warped my brain!
