song i wish had been on winter marquee...hmmm tough
one. well i don't have the DVD, because i don't have
a dvd player, so i do not have ANY clock without hands
songs on the cd. i would like there to be at least
one or two songs from her most recent album on the
live release. (i admit i am a rarity for not having a
dvd player, but i can't be the only nanci fan out
there who has yet to catch up with technology...can
i?) other than that, i would have to say it's a hard
life wherever you go (some may argue that this has
been over-recorded; i would have to respectfully
disagree and say that there is no such thing as
over-recording, over-singing, or over-listening-to
that song, especially in this time)...or, on a
somewhat lighter note, morning train. or this heart.

The rumors of Mark's demise are premature. I just meant since he doesn't
run the list anymore. Guess I should've just thanked him.

Are we restricted to songs she's covered? If not, I'd want her to cover
"Dimming Of The Day".

Friends out in the madness-
I've recently come across a new band... a new album, that has captured my
heart completely. Enchanting, haunting, beautiful... these are words I could
use to describe this little piece of plastic containing 17 perfect songs.
Each one would fit perfectly. There is something about this one that has
crawled under my skin. Even when the music's not playing, I'm still hearing
it breathe across my skin. So I'm telling the nicest people on the net (and
more often than not, the nicest people with the best taste) about it so that
you can discover it yourselves. If it touches even one person out there,
then my words haven't been in vain.
Forgive my poetics, this music stirs a muse I thought long ago dead- the
name of the album is Rabbit Songs, the name of the band is HEM and if you
don't fall in love with the singers voice on first listen then you are made
of stronger stuff than I. The album is full of traditional, soft lullabies
and mesmerizing tones touched in melancholy. It's the color blue, the color
purple and moonglow all at once. It's what music is all about.
So hunt it down. You won't be sorry.
given to poetic ramblings from time to time-

I don't see why Nanci couldn't write a little tune, "Reid Mitchell, the Man
of My Dreams."
Or, if that's asking too much, "The Drunk I Met In Nashville."

I was lucky enough to see Hem a month ago at the Stables, MK in England
after hearing one song on Bob Harris's radio show. They were thoroughly
enjoyable and very skilled.
One thing puzzled me though, and that was the way the men (the guitarist
like the son in 'Psycho', the Mexican bandido, and the invisible keyboards
and drummer) all sat, while the women (the singer with the wonderful hair
who did most of the talking, the pretty little one on fiddle and the sexy
tall one on double bass) all stood. Sorry to be so sexist, but I found the
women more interesting, though most would go for the bandit.
It's interesting to speculate on who is the leader of the band or who does
what to whom. They come across like a livelier Cowboy Junkies, and are well
worth seeing.

the way Nanci sang that song.

This is pretty easy since my favorite Nanci song is "So Long Ago", so that's
my choice, especially to get it on DVD. However, since she does that song on
the OVOR video, with tears in her eyes at the end, I'm going to throw out
four other choices: "Good Night To A Mother's Dream" and three songs from
Poet In My Window, which I don't see mentioned much on the NanciNet:
"Workin' In Corners", "Trouble With Rose", and "You Can't Go Home Again".
Happy Birthday,

It would be wonderful to hear You Can't Go Home Again...and, for me, maybe
even a little more wonderful to hear a recent, live, version of October
Reasons. Both are very beautiful.

I'm not aware of ANY live version of "October Reasons", let alone a recent
one.
It's a song that I never really thought much of until the last year or so.
It was only on listening to the "remastered" Poet album (which doesn't sound
all that different to the original to me, although I suppose that advancing
years and alcohol abuse may have had some effect on my auditory nerves....)
that I came to properly appreciate the full complement of songs on the cd.
It's now my favourite album, and while "Working in Corners", "You Can't Go
Home Again", and the rediscovered track "Can't Love Wrong" are undoubtedly
the highlights they are not as far ahead of the field as I had originally
thought. There's actually not a single song on that album that is less than
excellent, and certainly "October Reasons" rates very highly indeed.
Mike Barrett,
(who rates Winter Marquee as a really great cd/dvd although that attitude
seems to be somewhat unfashionable judging by the limited response on the
NN...)

The best Griffith song that never gets performed is Julie Ann.
"The bar room floor's her home....."
As an aside I noticed that the Winter Marquee DVD is not copy protected and
that anyone with a DVD drive on their PC or Mac can easily drag various cuts
off the disc for storage on the hard drive. Of course sharing these cuts via
e-mail or sneaker net is immoral if not illegal, I suppose.
Forgive the geek talk but I know there are some on this list who will
appreciate this bit of technotripe. Besides I get to tout my favorite tune.
Regards to one and all who have been on this list for its 8 years during
which Ms G. went from 42 to a tad short of 50. It's a hard life, wherever
you go!

Griffsters:
I was so sad to read about Derek Bell's passing. I have seen the Chieftains
in concert several times and a friend who worked at The Rainbow Theatre in
London here in the UK always talks fondly of the simplicity of setting up a
set for them .....a row of chairs. I did not realise Derek had been awarded
the MBE.
A real loss.
I have just treated myself to a batch of new cds, as a belated birthday
present, of which Winter Marquee was one.
1. In Spite of Ourselves - John Prine - This is delightful. I saw JP for
the first time at the landmine benefit concert early this year and fell in
love with him. I love these duets and hearing the voices of so many names I
had heard about from you folks is a real treat!
2. Won't You Take Me Home - The RCA Years - Brian Kennedy - Boy, the first
track is so Joni Mitchell. I thought it was her singing! I read the cover
and realise now that it's Brian's tribute to her. I also noted that he used
to sing in an old local pub called Minogues (in which I too spent many
wonderful hours in drinkin' Guinness). This double CD set will no doubt be
a favourite of mine.
3. FAD - The Very Best Of NG - I bought this to give to my Aunt for
Christmas and had to sneak a listen. I loved the live versions of the songs
and Mac Macanally's duet with Nanci on GCH. I will most definitely get
another copy for me!!!
4. Winter Marquee - Haven't had much of a chance to really listen to this
yet but first impressions are great. I am still waiting for the DVD.
TG the sniper has been caught.
Happy Halloween.
