There's a great new song called 'The Thread' from Art Garfunkel's new album
with Buddy Mondlock and Maia Sharp that's just been made available for
mp3.com stations - so I've added it to mine. If interested you can listen
to a quick stream of the whole song here
http://www.mp3.com/stations/acrossthepond

Although I've never seen him, I remembered there was a Buddy Mondlock
connection with Nanci. He toured the UK last year, playing at The Borderline
in London in July. Here's what I wrote in 'Across the Pond' -

>>>
Buddy Mondlock
http://www.buddymondlock.com

Buddy is a top Nashville writer whose songs have been covered
by the likes of Nanci Griffith http://www.nancigriffith.com, Joan Baez
http://www.joanbaez.com and Janis Ian http://www.janisian.com.
His latest album, 'Poetic Justice' includes guest artists Guy Clark,
http://www.guyclark.com/, Ellis Paul http://www.EllisPaul.com and
Nanci Griffith, who says "Buddy represents the best of the new
generation of singer-songwriters in folk music....he is one of my
favorite new writers", whilst Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary
http://www.peterpaulandmary.com/, who recorded his song 'The
Kid' on their recent 'Lifelines' album, says, "with writers like Buddy
around I don't think we need to worry about the future of folk music!"

As to Mia http://www.maiasharp.com - found this on her site -
"A song called "A Home" that I wrote with my dad, Randy Sharp is on
this new album [Dixie Chicks - Home] and the Chicks kick its butt."

Her dad, Randy http://www.randysharp.ws/about.htm has written
songs for Linda Ronstadt, Jennifer Warnes, Edgar Winter and just
about every country act you've ever heard.

The song with Art Garfunkel and Maia (on harmony vocals and lilting
soprano sax) is really worth a listen.

Best to all
Paul

Rob, what do you mean "how taut things have been?"

Anyway, I was there, and below is my review of Nanci and the BMO, which I am
pretty sure I didn't post at the time, because other postings covered the
situation quite well. Since things are slow, here it is (written 8/21/2000):

---------------------------------------------------
Hi NN'ers,
...
Nanci and the BMO - a very odd show. (I have not discussed this with any
other Nanci fans, so I wonder what others think...I'm sure we'll hear :-)
She was not happy. She did not like the band's playing in Battlefield; Nanci
and/or James messed up the vocals in Gulf Coast Hwy. She said something to
the effect of "especially tonight" in the intro to Hard Life, then actually
mentioned the show in one verse. They even messed up the lyrics to Hammer a
little. And when she introduced the band, she forgot James! During her
anti-landmine bit, I said, "It's real funny, huh," sounding a bit sarcastic,
but a big shooting star had just plunged over the stage and the crowd may
have responded to that. Her set ran a little short and there was no encore.
And personally I think her song intros have gotten altogether too serious.
Mercifully she did not tell us how important "Hard Life" is (even if it is).

OK, I'm finished complaining. There were some surprises. Lee Satterfield,
for one! Some song surprises as well - it wasn't just the line-up from DBS.
"Battlefield" was a real treat; "Speed of the Sound..." and "Across the
Great Divide" were delightful. "Outbound Plane" always sends me. Nanci was
in fine voice, as was James, and the BMO was exemplary (I didn't notice
anything wrong on Battlefield). The arrangements were similar to the studio
versions, but better in some cases. James and Ron played some lovely licks
and James kicked 'em out on Ford Econoline.

This Wednesday, 10/30, Warren Zevon will be on Letterman.

Bill, congratulations (you, too, Mark) on 8 wonderful years for this list.
I hope I never have to do it again, but this weekend I was home sick and
read about 5 months worth of nancinet while playing email catch up. This
list is a real community. I laughed, I cried (sobbed over Bill - Sue, I say
a prayer for you every night when I lay down to sleep), I was mad, I was
enlightened, but most of all entertained and informed. I discovered Buddy
and Julie Miller through this list, a fact for which I'll be forever
grateful. I'm standing behind wire mesh, so I can say they rank right up
there with Nanci in my book.

Poet in my Window - yes, it's almost impossible to choose just one song!

What's up with "FAD - Nanci's Greatest Hits" that contains a duet with Mac
McAnally? Is it an import and what song is the duet? When I first heard
Mac sing "Minimum Love" on the radio, I thought it was James or Livingston
Taylor. Went straight to the record store to purchase.

Y'all are so cool and thanks for the great music talk!

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the Little
Love Affairs version of Gulf Coast Highway a duet with
Mac Macanally (sp?)??? I'm pretty sure it is, and
that song is on FAD--Greatest Hits.

That's a dream of mine as well. I am reminded of her
Austin City Limits performance of 1988? 89? 90?...with
a small band but not near as big or as electric as
now. Or better yet, OFSE. Nanci and James...they'd
have to be sure and hit up Cactus Cafe here in Austin,
among other places...

for songs i'd have to pick

1.) Daddy Said
2.) Ghost in the Music
3.) You Can't Go Home Again
4.) One of These Days
5.) Storms
6.) Down 'n' Outer (hmmm,. haven't heard that one in
awhile...better go find that CD and stick it in my car)
7.) Love Wore a Halo
8.) Anyone Can Be Somebody's Fool
9.) 1937 Pre-War Kimball (I'd like to hear this one
without the symphonic sound behind it--just guitar and piano)
10.) Sun, Moon, and Stars

plus so many others but i'll limit it to 10.

in addition to songs, what would everyone's favorite venue be to see Nanci
in?

Griffsters,

Some odds and ends during this quiet NanciNet time:

Song I would've liked to hear on Winter Marquee: Well,
we did get one song from Once in a Very Blue Moon, but
I'd still like to hear Ghost in the Music live---"Tell
me where are the flames of the hobos' cauldrons,
Refuge for these poor and these fallen. . ."

And RIP Paul Wellstone, one of the real champions of
the poor and fallen.

And Bill Page wrote (in the intro to the Digest):
// Man, what a GREAT World Series! You know,
// baseball...oh, well...

You're right about that, Bill (and you're not the only
baseball fan in NanciLand); but next year, the
Minnesota Twins. . . I remember the night of Game 7 of
the 1991 series between the Twins and the Atlanta
Braves. I was in the audience while Maura O'Connell
did a great show at a club in Pawling, NY; all the
while she was getting sign language updates on the
status of the game from the bartender in the next
room. Unfortunately for Maura and her Braves, that was
the night of the Jack Morris masterpiece. All zeroes
till the bottom of the tenth. What a game.

And speaking of Irish women, how 'bout Sinead
O'Connor's new collection of traditional songs,
Sean-Nos Nua. Some breathtaking stuff there. And Texas
women: I can't get enough of the latest from the Dixie
Chicks, Home; great songs, singing, and playing, and a
new (to me) lullaby to sing to my son, big as he's
getting. . .

Okay, I'll stop now.

I've got the DVD, heck I'd buy our songbird singing the Franklin, TN Yellow
Pages if it ever came down to that.

The question about what song(s) I'd like to here Nanci record if I could
have produced the last album would have to be one of the following; LATE
NIGHT RADIO (Starland Vocal Band, later covered by John Denver), POWDER
MONKEYS (Schooner Fare), or the Irish ballad KILKELLY, IRELAND.

The first is just a fun tune, the second a question about the cost war takes
on our youngest, and the last is just a lament about the life of an Irish
immigrant. Take yer pick Ms Griffith.

Well if we're drifting onto covers I always fantasised about Nanci covering
a great Rankin Family song called, 'Movin' On'. I agree that most any track
from 'Poet' would be a gem on Winter Marquee (which I'm still waiting for).
I did drive my house mate crazy by playing 'Can't Love Wrong' over and over
- felt like a real gift.

I'm having the loveliest time with 'going driftless': an artists tribute to
Greg Brown. It's got Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Gillian Welch and lots of the
usual suspects. I'm struggling to get past listening to the Iris DeMent and
Shawn Colvin tracks which I just have on repeat. Iris really does it for me
and I really hope we see here her in Europe again soon.

I was wondering about the seeming lack of connection between Nanci G and
Kate & Anna McGarrigle (whose music I kinda adore). Kate and Anna seemed to
have worked with all the folks Nanci usually work with but I've never heard
about a Nanci/McGarrigle collaboration?

That's me done - all rambled out.

I've seen Nanci in a few different line-ups now, and must say that the idea
of a Nanci/James/LeAnn trio performance never occurred to me, but it sure
sounds like a good idea!!! :) I'd go to a lot of effort to make it to that

I suspect there's a strong correlation between loving Nanci and liking new
works by certain other artists.

Patty Griffin's 1000 KISSES, for example? Isn't it wonderful? It kills me
that there's still an unreleased Griffin cd--one we may never hear. I
wonder if it includes TOP OF THE WORLD, her great song which she performed
on Austin City Limits and which Natalie Maines sings so well on The Dixie
Chicks' HOME. Apparently, the new DVD by Kasey Chambers, BEHIND THE
BARRICADES, also contains a performance of this song. I expect Kasey would
do wonders for it, too. Frustratingly, the DVD can only be played on
all-region DVD players (which eliminates most of ours) and PAL-compliant
televisions. All Kasey fans write to her American label-Warner
Brothers--and lobby for an all-region version.

I've just found out about Kate Campbell's new cd, MONUMENTS. I don't know
how I missed advance notice of this one...later than many of you, I expect.
Kate's website (http://www.katecampbell.com/) has generous clips of all 10
songs. It's been released in the UK and Europe but is available in the
U.S. by snail mail from Kate herself. It sounds very good...

The brand-new, NO DEPRESSION, has a very positive review of WINTER MARQUEE.
Buzz McClain writes that WINTER MARQUEE "...finds the country-folk
singer-songwriter in top form, with a gilded, evocative voice that rings as
true as that of her pal Emmylou Harris (who sings along on Julie Gold's
'Good Night, New York'). Her longtime companions in the five-piece Blue
Moon Orchestra provide impressively astute instrumentation, the notes
dropping into just the right spaces." There's also an interesting piece on
Kim Richey--another favorite--which may provide some context for her
challenging new cd, RISE. I'm still trying to decide if Shelby Lynne's
former producer (of the wonderful I AM SHELBY LYNNE) is really right for
Kim... Any thoughts on RISE, compared with its great predecessors?

Who will be taking on the onerous task of compiling our nominations for Best
of 2002?

Indeed, Monuments is a wonderful CD (in keeping with all of
Kate's other wonderful CDs). There are several songs on the disc
that represent Kate at her best (Yellow Guitar, How Much Can One
Heart Hold, The New South), indicating that she is still going
strong as a songwriter.

One doesn't HAVE to order it from Kate through snail mail...I
believe Bill Lavery at Village Records has it available, or you
can catch Kate at a venue near you and buy it directly from her
(as I did).

Goodness, is it that time already? Well, it's easy. How many can we name?

If it's 10, then it's Nanci, Patty Griffin, Kim Richey, Norah Jones, Eva
Cassidy, Dixie Chicks, Gillian Welch, Lucy Kaplansky, Nickel Creek, Be Good
Tanyas, Lee Ann Womack, Kris Delmhorst, Tift Merritt, Hem, Allison Moorer,
Ailish Kennedy (Irish), Dervish (Irish), and Flook (Irish), Little Johnny
England and anything with Alison Krauss in it.
If it's 5 then it's Nanci, Patty, Norah, Dixies and .... oh heck, do we have
to do this yet?

No, it isn't - there's still a sixth of the year to go. I'd like to suggest
that we give it another 4 or 5 weeks before submitting our lists. Otherwise
we could well be having to add PS's in the event of some mind-blowing

Ouch. I really like Rise. Sure I prefer her first couple of cds out of them
all, but I think Rise is a fine outing. But it's not folk or country, if
that's what you want. I'd compare it to Lucinda's Essence, in that lots of
people were disappointed with it because it was such a departure. But I love
that one, too.

I saw Kim last week at the Magic Bag in Ferndale, MI and it was quite
enjoyable. Her touring band isnt as strong as some she's had, but not bad.
She is selling a limited number of vinyl pressings of Rise at her shows, for
those who are into that.
