Hi from Oz. I guess these CMA Awards are ancient history
to those in the U.S., But have only recently shown up down
here on Pay. Sat through it last night, or rather endured it
would be more accurate. Apart from a wonderful song from
The Dixie Chicks, another from Nickel Creek, and everything
relative to the O Brother gang, the whole thing was instantly
forgettable. I dont wish to be disparaging of only U.S. acts
but include also "our" Keith Urban, who for reasons perhaps
better known to Americans, seems to be popular in your
country. I was amazed to see the likes of Buddy & Julie
Miller doing backgrounds for someone whos name escapes
me. But, have faith, its only a few weeks to the release of
"Barricades & Brickwalls" from Kasey C. Dont miss it !!!!!

Hey Steve, life is full of surprises. There are some really great talents

Hi there. I am sending this to a few lists, because I dont know who
else to ask. I am in the market for a new stereo, right now I dont
have anything except an old boom box from about 10 or 15 years ago
that only plays CDs it likes (though I do have a good car stereo,
which is where I listen to most of my music now). I want to get
something really good, hopefully with multiple CD trays (like 3 or 5
or 6). I considered Bose, but that is just SO expensive. Buy I'd
like to get somethng better than your basic department stores brands,
something that will last and not end up in a landfill in a few years.
Any input on web sites or brands or particular products would be
great.

Thanks!!!

Beta Videos were the better quality. VHS just did a superior job of

My main rig is a Yamaha receiver (radio tuner and amp) that I
bought new in 1978 and it is still going strong. I have an even
older Sony that I bought at a yard sale for 20 bucks that I use
to power speakers on the patio and den. My brother has a Marantz
that he got in 1976. All these units sound great even though
they "look" very 70's...they have wood cases and brushed aluminum
fronts. I don't think you can go wrong if you get a name make
and spend some $$ for the basic components.

On the other hand, I wouldn't go out and blow alot of change
on a cd player. Anything you get is going to be obsolete in a
few years.

I can't agree with this. Special when you have a lot of CDs.

I always thought that a CD-player was a CD-player till I bought a NAD-
player some years ago. I heard a lot insturments I never heard before.
This one had a technical problem and I trade it in for a Linn Mimik and
again I heard a lot of instruments I never heard before on the same CDs.
I'm very content with my Linn CD-player and amp and pre-amp. It was
expensive, but a hobby may cost money.

The formula here was: spend about 50% of your budget on loudspeakers and
more on your CD-player as on the amp.

My favorite Canadian artist is James Keelaghan. Anyone ever hear him? I
saw him live at the MN Folk Festival in September and I wondered where
he's been all my life. His 7th CD is being released on January 15th. He's
a great songwriter and performer. If anyone's interested, his most famous
song, "Cold Missouri Waters" is available as a free mp3 at his website,
http://www.keelaghan.com. Cry, Cry, Cry (Dar Williams, Lucy Kaplansky and
Richard Shindell) recorded it also.

Also, on my website is an mp3 and a video clip of Maura O'Connell and
Michael Johnson performing Nanci's "Trouble in the Fields" from a TV
broadcast. http://www.mjblue.com/mjclips.html

Then again --- any sound equipment can be improved if you replace the
copper wiring, for example, with silver or teflon.
You can also cryo your stuff and would be amazed how you permanently
improve the sound quality. (This of course requires gradual cooling below
0 degree temperatures...) We have some freezers at work that go
down to 250 below 0... many a colleague has, in the past, brought
their CD recorder, microphone, stereo wires in to improve their quality.

Feeling a bit technical today...

Most definitely! Every time I think I'm all Broooced out for one

NanciNuts,

I drove 40 miles round trip for a song tonight, excited to hear today's
release of Poet In My Window, one of the 3 Nanci albums released today in
remastered form and the one with the added song, "Can't Love Wrong".
(With Borders only carrying one copy apiece, I was lucky to find that and
more than happy to make the trip!) Let me first say that the sound is
absolutely glorious - clear as a bell and warm at the same time. The
sound is noticeably improved, with all the changes in sound for the
better. I have something of a healthy distrust for technological
advances, picked up from the mindsets of the elders in my family of half
Appalachian hillbilly stock and half "dustbowl" farmer stock who never
cared much for newfangled stuff.
And I couldn't explain the process of digitally remastering if I had to --
"What, they're gonna put it through some kind of computer process and
digitize it and *change* it?! It's gonna sound smashed or mushed or just
not right!" But listening to this new release of Poet sounds like you're
sitting at the feet of those boots Kenn loves so much, hearing it live.
What a joy. What bliss.

The new liner notes combine those from the original CD and those from the
album, which included lyrics and pictures. A very nice release, with some
added words of affection from NG about the additional song, her "lost
child". It's a sweet, sad love song, and a beautiful gift of music from
Ms. Griffith. Subtly enriched by the BMO, more spot-on production by
Griffith/Rooney, something of a thematic precursor to More Than A Whisper,
and sounding as if it's been on the PIMW album all along.

It's a real treat to hear this gem from NG's Rounder Records days, and to
revisit this album that is a masterpiece in every sense.

Hey gang,

I too went to our local Borders yesterday to pick up the three Nanci
remasters, and have not been disappointed. The sound is absolutely
fantastic, really clean and clear, and the additional song "Can't Love
Wrong" on PIMW is simply beautiful. The liner notes, lyrics, and photos
which were not included when theses discs were originally released make
for a nice bonus as well, and as Julie pointed out, Nanci includes some
touching words about the inclusion of "Can't Love Wrong" on Poet.

On a touring note, I see that Nanci has been addded as a performer for the
annual Kate Wolf Festival in late June in northern California. Looks like
a fantastic line-up! I plan on making a trip to Colorado from my home in
Pittsburgh in June to once again see the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and
am keeping my fingers crossed that Nanci will play there as well. Ah,
something to look forward to through the long winter....

Take care,
~Lisa

The full version of the single can be previewed or downloaded from her

awesome arrangement. Even as an mp3 file - the song is five minutes so it
may take awhile to download if you don't have broadband or dsl. Let me

I think this is more likely to be HDCD - which seems to be used on most
