My favorite Canadian artist is James Keelaghan. Anyone ever hear him? I
saw him live at the MN Folk Festival in September and I wondered where
he's been all my life. His 7th CD is being released on January 15th.
He's a great songwriter and performer. If anyone's interested, his most
famous song, "Cold Missouri Waters" is available as a free mp3 at his
website, http://www.keelaghan.com. Cry, Cry, Cry (Dar Williams, Lucy
Kaplansky and Richard Shindell) recorded it also.
Also, on my website is an mp3 and a video clip of Maura O'Connell and
Michael Johnson performing Nanci's "Trouble in the Fields" from a TV
broadcast. http://www.mjblue.com/mjclips.html

Cindy,
Gotta agree with you about James Keelaghan. I've been listening to him
since his first album.
I first saw him live at the old Birchmere in Alexandria, VA after his
second album was out.
The next time was at Oak Grove, a little folk festival near my home. He
sang "Cold Missouri Water" at a writing session and talked about the
song. It tore me up when I heard it, and still does. Had to have "A
Recent Future" that day. I read the "Young Men In Fire" book just
because of that song. I've managed to see him three times so far and he
is excellent live, isn't he? It's a shame he doesn't get to Virginia
more often.
Richard Shindell did a good version of the song also. I got to see him
and Lucy Kaplansky on the same bill last summer. Wonderful show. I blew
Lucy away by telling her that the first time that I saw her was singing
backup for Nanci on her TNN New Country of "Lone Star State Of Mind". I
was living in Nashville at the time and went to the taping to get my
first glimpse of live Nanci. Ohhhh, I was enthralled.....

I agree whole 100% about Lynn Miles, often overlooked.
IMO she's similar to Lucy Kaplansky, and both are truly
soothing to the soul, heart, and ears

I just had to send a quick "hello" after reading you're post! I've got
a weak spot for Telluride BGF. My first trip to Colorado was to attend
and my first "cross-country" camping trip was to attend. Two of my most
treasured memories. The bonus was seeing Nanci both times! (even got an
autograph once!). Two kids and almost 10 years later, the trip from
Alabama to Telluride seems even further away, but one day...

Hi all,
OK, mention Canadian artists & get me started:
1. The Be Good Tanyas - Blue Horse
This fantastic CD was recently released in the U.S. I like the line:
"imagine Iris Dement, Gillian Welch and Lucinda Williams sitting on a
backwoods porch sounding positively drunk with joy." These Vancouver
ladies may not be the most proficient instrumentalists, but their
harmonies, straight forward arrangements and attitude make this my fave of
the year.
2. Lynn Miles - Unravel
I'd been waiting for this & wasn't dissapointed. Great record from a very
under-appreciated songwriter from Ottawa. Great voice! I got mine from
mymusic.com for US$9.90!
3. Scruj MacDuhk - The Road To Canso
The best Celtic/Bluegrass/Cape Breton/French Canadian band from Winnepeg!
Ruth Moody is a great Irish singer & they're all so young. www.scruj.com
4. Fred Eaglesmith - Ralph's Last Show
I don't know how Fred could be 4th on my list. Fred's cool.
5. The Paperboys - Postcards
Fun/stompy/CelticPop. GREAT LIVE BAND.
6. The Waifs - Sink Or Swim
OK, they're Aussies but I saw them at the Vancouver Folk Festival. They're
back again in NA this year.
Cindy mentioned James Keelaghan. He's another superb talent from up north.
Looking forward to seeing him at Folk Alliance in Jacksonville next month.
Anyone else going?

I found out today that he was/is the guitar player for the band Oh

Anyone want to hear a brand new version of Late Night Grande Hotel? This
is Nanci, a piano and a plaintive oboe. Perhaps the most beautiful and
haunting version of the song that I have heard. The pace of the song is
slower and more stately than the original release. Even very different
from the Dustbowl Symphony version. And don't confuse the oboe reference
to the strange mixes on the "Revisited" CD. I wasn't aware of this new
version and have seen no mention of it on Nancinet or on the official
website.
What a pleasant surprise when I purchased this CD called Utopia from an
ebay auction. I expected another CD full of previously released material
but I usually will buy anything that has a Nanci Griffith cut on it (0+
different discs and still going). The 2 disc set contains some great
music by lots of well known artists. It is a benefit disc as described
below from the labels web site...
The gay owned and operated NYC based record label Centaur Entertainment
has created a perfect world with Utopia, a star studded benefit album of
empowering anthems and featuring over 40 artists from pop, rock, dance,
country, jazz, and Broadway, including Melissa Etheridge, Aretha Franklin,
Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Jay Z, Gloria Estefan, Moby, Griffith, Rufus
Wainright, Michael Feinstein and Lillias White.
The two CD collection of new and previously released material includes one
disc of sentimental pop songs and ballads and another of high energy dance
and club tunes. The compilation was produced by Centaur founder Nick De
Biase as a benefit album for the Human Rights Campaign, the Gay and
Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the Lambda Legal Defense and
Education Fund, and various gay and lesbian service centers across the
nation.

It's really troublesome when your compiler of the Best of 2001 gets it
wrong. I did, badly. At least it was on my own list. I've been very
careful in compiling your "best" choices, I promise.
ConorMG sent me a nearly right-wing editorial slashing at me,
sword-like, for my alphabetical approach and lack of comments on my
choices. I pleaded that the compiler's time is short, taken up with
correctly tabulating others' lists. But I thought I'd say a word or
two. I don't want ConorMG mad at me.
Correction
I misnamed shamefully one of my favorites of the year. Of course, it
should be: Lynn Miles. UNRAVEL. True North. The great Lynn Miles is
finally back in "slightly haunted" territory after a mildly unfortunate
detour of a "night in a strange town." Her new cd is only available in
Canada at this point but it abundantly worth seeking out. All her
trademark cold Canadian beauty is back--made more interesting from the
things learned out in L.A.
"You can read a lot of books it don't make you smart
kiss a lot of fools don't mean you got a heart
walk a million miles don't mean that you traveled
you can make a perfect plan and see it all unravel."
Amen. Now if we could only get Leslie Smith to put out another cd...
Newbies
Be Good Tanyas. BLUE HORSE. Porch Music/Socan. Someone else nominated
this cd, as well. Very unusual. Three banjo/mandolin/guitar playing
Canadian women: Frazey, Samantha and Trish. Reportedly recorded in a
barn up North. Fabulous and unique.
Elizabeth Cook. ELIZABETH COOK. Bro 'N Sis Music. I think I bought
this from Miles of Music. She could single-handedly bring commercial
country music back to a state of honesty. Lovely voice and that
terrific, lewd song "Demon." What must her parents have thought?
Caroline Herring. TWILIGHT. Blue Corn Music. No corn, lots of blue.
Sweet country paintings. A great, quiet voice. You can learn about
snow in Mississippi.
Irish/Scottish/Celtic, etc.
What a great year when Karan Casey (who used to be with Solas) and Kate
Rusby (who alone must make Yorkshire a tourist attraction) and Cathie
Ryan (Irish-American heartbreaker, working with Rusby and Rusby's
significant other, John McCusker) all have new works out! Three of the
loveliest voices on the planet.
Late Discoveries
I'd never heard of Jann Browne or Eliza Gilkyson before recently. Much
better late that never. Both definitely their own women. Both having
clearly travailed serious travails. Both having back cd catalogs of
great fascination and quality. Tough and sweet and iconoclastic. The
old and the new. From Eliza's "Beauty Way:"
"doe eyed kid and a little transistor
tuned in to Wolfman Jack
I picked up a guitar heard the sirens whisper
and I never looked back little darling
and I never looked back."
A bit of Carter and Grammer territory in those lines.
Returns/Reunions
Patty's MOUNTAIN SOUL is everywhere evident on this release. The
classiest (and perhaps sexiest--I haven't forgot the amazing Shelby) of
all country singers. If there's a better and more moving song out this
year than "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive," I don't know what it is.
And who knew she was such a great songwriter?
Jennifer Warnes. THE WELL. SIN-DROME. Such a long wait since "The
Hunter." But worth every note and every great line penned by Jennifer
and others. She seems ageless, singing as well as ever. Wait til you
hear her "Too Late Love Comes"--her words and her arrangement of the
Irish air, "Dawning of the Day" (also known as "Raglan Road").
And this year also gave us Nanci, Dave and Tracy, Kasey (oh, Kasey!--see
the article and cover photo of the new issue of NO DEPRESSION) and a
host of others doing their best. Thanks.

I've been looking forward ever since to your latest, having bought eight

I'm glad that my two sentences of dismay at your not writing more for us

Sorry David but here is another correction. Lynn Miles "Unravel" was
released here in the U.K. at the end of October on the Continental City
label (who distribute Philo/Rounder etc. here in Europe). For me it is
good, very good in parts, but not as strong as "Night In A Strange Town"
my favourite Lynn Miles record. Just goes to show how different opinions

Hi folks --
Just wanted to let everyone know that it looks like we made our point.
Thanks to those here who wrote and participated in efforts to prevent the
format change. Next time your out driving around after dark, tune your
radio to 650AM. If there's a Vandy game on, turn it off, but if not,
listen in for a few minutes. Hopefully, through the crackles and pops
you'll hear that the air castle of the South is still broadcasting real
country & bluegrass music across the golden lights of America.

GAYLORD COMMITTED TO GRAND OLE OPRY,
KEEPS COUNTRY FORMAT ON 650 WSM-AM
Cmpany Seeks Ways To Tune Even More Listeners To Opry And Other
Programs
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Jan. 14, 2001)-- Gaylord Entertainment Company's
President and Chief Executive Officer Colin Reed today recommitted
the company to the growth and success of the Grand Ole Opry and
country music, and confirmed that historic Nashville-based 650
WSM-AM will retain its country format.
"The Grand Ole Opry is an international institution, and 650 WSM-AM
has been its home since it began. Our commitment today is to ensure
both of these icons of country music realize their greatest potential,"
Reed said at a press conference at the Ryman Auditorium.
Reed said the company spent the last few months evaluating the
potential growth of the Opry, and he believes there is "a very exciting
opportunity to expand the audience for the Opry and make it an even
greater vehicle for showcasing not only the heritage, but the best of
country music: past, present and future."
He said the company is pursuing syndication of the Opry and other
opportunities to expand its reach.
At the same time, Reed said, the company considered alternative
formats at 650 WSM-AM, to find ways to curb financial losses at the
station. The station lost $1.5 million during the past year.
"WSM-AM is not a conventional radio station," Reed said. "While we
looked at alternatives that might have made sense for another AM
station in another market, we concluded that WSM-AM is a gem that
just needs some polishing. We want to keep the country format and
build on its incredible heritage and the loyalty of its listeners."
Reed thanked the loyal WSM listeners and artists who voiced their
views in recent weeks about the future of the station and plans for the
Opry. He said he plans to write back to those who sent mail and e-mail
expressing their opinions.
"We listened and took those views into account in making our
on," he said. "But contrary to some media reports, at the time the
information leaked out we had not made a decision to change formats.
We were merely looking at a number of options and have now
concluded that WSM has the most potential for success by becoming
America's best known and remaining the most respected country
station."
WSM's first broadcast was on October 5, 1925. It has been broadcasting
the Grand Ole Opry for 70 years, making it the longest running radio
program in history. The station boosted its power to 50,000 watts in
1932, making the station one of few, then and now, to reach up to 38
states at night.
Gaylord Entertainment Company is a diversified hospitality and
entertainment company headquartered in Nashville. Its stock is traded
on the New York Stock Exchange (symbol: GET). Its businesses in
addition to WSM and the Grand Ole Opry include the Gaylord Hotels
and Acuff-Rose Music Publishing.
