This has always been an eclectic group, but it was fun to see
Home-Dixie Chicks and The Rising-Springsteen mentioned.
I enjoy both CDs. Another CD produced in 2002 that should
be mentioned is The Best of Townes Van Zandt. Like most
Nanci fans, I have a lot of Townes stuff, but I had never
heard the cut he did with Willie Nelson.

(( 3. NEIL FINN "Private Universe"

Finn Fan here! I very much enjoyed all four of the Crowded House albums
back in the 80's and 90's and have always found Neil Finn, and to a certain
extent his brother Tim as well, to be a wonderful songwriter with a very
sharp sense of melody. I have not yet submitted my top 10 list for the
year, but "One Nil" is a prime contender.

Forgot to add that while Neil Finn isn't exactly a household name here in
the US, Crowded House did have a pair of sizable hits here with "Don't Dream
It's Over" and "Something So Strong" both from the band's self titled debut
albums. Some subsequent singles, as well as "I Got You" by his and brother
Tim's previous band Split Enz, were minor hits here as well.

What a world! I haven't bought (or received) as many CDs as I usually do,
especially in the first part of the year, when everyone was still in shock;
however, a couple of my choices are records that helped me get through the
year. I listened to a lot of old favorites, but these are the new ones I
loved: (and there are less than 10!)

Zero Church/Suzzy & Maggie Roche (originally scheduled for
release 9/11/01, rescheduled for April, 2002, with new track,
"New York."). Extra points for the brilliant live performance
of the album I saw at St. Ann's Warehouse in Brooklyn!
Home/Dixie Chicks
anything by Eminem (JUST KIDDING!!!)
The Rising/Bruce Springsteen
Listen Hard/Melissa Ferrick
Winter Marquee/Nanci Griffith
Sheryl Crow/C'mon, C'mon
Ashes/Cris Williamson (late 2001 release, I didn't hear it til 2002).

...oh, and honorable mention to Dolly Parton's Halo's & Horns, especially
the "Stairway to Heaven" cover. (Hmm...the Dixie Chicks covered Stevie
Nicks' Landslide, so that makes TWO bluegrass covers of great rock tunes I
liked this year). And also Hon. Mention to Michele Greene's Ojo de Tiburon,
which came out of left field, and is DEFINITELY the best album by a tv actor
that's not a vanity project of 2002.

Cheers,

Kathleen W.

I have bought very few new albums this year, so the list is short:

Bob Dylan - Bootleg series volume 5 - The Rolling Thunder Revue.
Brand new, and a must-have. Live from 1975. The best.
Nanci Griffith - Winter Marquee
Sheryl Crow - C'mon C'mon

Reissues/anthologies (no particular order)

Rolling Stones - 40 Licks. Contains 4 new songs out of 40,
so I guess this is the right category
Rolling Stones - Aftermath UK version 2002 SACD issue
Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed 2002 SACD issue
Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet 2002 SACD issue
Rolling Stones - Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out 2002 SACD issue
Kinks - Ultimate Collection
Don't remember if these 2 was late 2001 or early 2002:
Nanci Griffith - Poet In My Window reissue
Nanci Griffith - Once In a Very Blue Moon reissue

I didn't buy much new this year so I don't really know what's the best of
2002. But my vote goes to Thea Gilmore, "Rules for Jokers."

I reviewed this so I'll link to the review:

Best of 2002 - Richard's Picks

#1 - Come Away with Me - Norah Jones
An emphatic and enthusiastic "#1"! No question about it! NO brand new artist
has blown me away the way Norah has with this stunning first full album.
That's right, NO artist, EVER, has grabbed my attention so immediately. She
gave me the disc back in January when she was, pretty much, an unknown. The
disc has since gone "Triple Platinum" (so far). She's been touring the
world, been on magazine covers, and is the musical guest TONIGHT on Saturday
Night Live! All of a sudden, Norah is the biggest selling artist in the
great history of Blue Note Records! Norah is for real! A star was born this
year!

Zero Church - Suzzy & Maggie Roche
Live - Alison Krauss & Union Station
Midnight and Lonesome - Buddy Miller
How Sweet It Is - Joan Osborne
Monuments - Kate Campbell
Twang on a Wire - Kate Campbell
The Memorial Hall Recordings - Mark Erelli
Rise - Kim Richey
Easy - Kelly Willis
Belly of the Sun - Cassandra Wilson
Out in California - Dave Alvin & The Guilty Men
Wait for Me - Susan Tedeschi
Bramble Rose - Tift Merritt
Lost in Space - Aimee Mann
1000 Kisses - Patty Griffin
Halos & Horns - Dolly Parton
Blue Country Heart - Jorma Kaukonen
Don't Give Up On Me - Solomon Burke
Unravel - Lynn Miles
I'm Every Woman - Rory Block
Something Worth Leaving Behind - Lee Ann Womack
Home - Dixie Chicks
Blood on the Tracks - Mary Lee's Corvette

Note: These two had their 'official' US release in 2002, but were in my Top
10 last year:
1 - new non-fiction - Susan Werner
7 - Barricades & Brickwalls - Kasey Chambers

Hi,

Here is my top 10 for the year 2002:

1 Laura Cantrell - When the roses blooms
2 Kate Campbell - Monuments
3 Buddy Miller - Midnight & Lonesome
4 Fred Eaglesmith - Falling stars and broken hearts
5 Dave Alvin - Out in California
6 Kelly Willis - Easy
7 Solomon Burke - Don't give up on me
8 The Very Girls - Elsewhere Bound
9 Kasey Chambers - Barricades & brickwalls
10 Ralph Stanley - idem

Maybe I should add Kate Campbell's "Twang on a wire", but in spite of John
Graveling's efforts I still don't have the CDR here :-(((( and maybe I can
put the CD unheard in the top 10 knowing Kate's quality.

best belated bought in 2002: The Be Good Tanyas - Blue Horse

Best concert 2002 _ Fred J. Eaglesmith and the Flathead Noodlers -
Rockingham Meetinghouse - Bellows Falls Fred Eaglesmith weekend.

met vriendelijke groeten,

Hans Janssen.
