   From: "Caroline Grew" (c.k.grew@btopenworld.com>

Greetings Folks!

I attended the concert at the Hammersmith Apollo in London on Thursday
evening. It was fantastic. The intimacy of the set was such that you
completely forget the largeness of the venue. The sound was spectacular
and it was delightful to hear Emylou and Nanci's voices. I was so
impressed by John Prine's wonderful sense of humour and to hear Steve
Earle sing Fort Worth Blues. Nanci sang Travelling Through This Part of
You, a Julie Gold song, the name of which escapes me, Listen to the
Radio (which was thrilling to hear again after such a long time - this
song was one of my favourites when I first discovered her talents, way
back when) and she finished off with It's a Hard Life. I had forgotten
how wonderful Elvis Costello's voice is - even though I did get
irritated by the way he went on but was knocked out by him singing
Shipbuilding, one of my favourite songs by him. Emylou and Nanci put up
their Cambodian scarves for auction and A38000 was raised, which was
fantastic. I am now intending to treat myself to the CD.

I really needed to hear good songs and enjoy the positive vibes after a
harrowing day clearing out my late mother's house. Thank you all for a
wonderful evening.

Best wishes
Caroline in London

   From: Lorie and Ben (lrblake@snet.net>

I keep hearing a persistent rumor that Nanci and some of her cohorts
will be recording a new song by John Stewart that honors those who died
on September 11. One of the rumors (my favorite) suggests that it may be
done in "We Are the World" fashion, with all monies raised going to
charity. Can anyone shed some light on this?
I now return to my lurking cage, until next time...

Yea, I know, Lorrie. And it was quite humbling to see how many
NanciNetters voted it so highly as I compiled the results. Well,
nobody ever said I followed the crowd--at least not too slavishly. I
was really really disppointed in TIME*SEX*LOVE. Morbid, overly low-key
and uninteresting in its themes--sort of a rich, successful Mary Chapin
now bemoaning the problems of her jet-set life. I remember a long
review in the Washington Post at the time which said much the same
thing. And I'm an MCC lover. It's just I don't think she's done
anything really wonderful since all of STONES IN THE ROAD and half of A
PLACE IN THE WORLD. The only cut which came alive for me on
TIME*SEX*LOVE was the bonus, bluegrassy cut.

Hi folks: I am pretty sure that is Nanci and would not be surprised if that
isn't the song she had done with a producer who who was killed in the Sept. 11
disaster. When Nanci cancelled out of her concerts after that horrible day she
mentioned having just completed an ad for the environment with the referred to
gentleman as producer. I like the song and believe it is an effective ad. But
then again I like most thing Nanci does.

I got to see Kate Campbell perform live Friday night. It was great!! I
thought I'd never get to see her since she is not on the west coast very
often and she's never been to Oregon before! It was everything I had
hoped it would be and worth the three hour drive! I talked to her after
the show and told her that it was through the NanciNet that I had
discovered her music. She said to tell ya'll hi and how grateful she is
to all of the support she had gotten from Nanci fans. She told me the
story of Mark Ferguson tracking her down after hearing a track on a
promo CD in a magazine. She said she didn't even have a CD out yet. She
hopes to meet Nanci one day and would like to work with her. She was so
gracious!

Anyone out there reading right now? Can you help with a crossword
question? Julie _____ sang "Cry Me a River"?

Thanks,
Molly

know!

I discovered Kate Campbell's music this last year, not through Nanci, but
through Jack Williams (Jackwilliamsmusic.com), with whom she performed in
England last month.

Well, I didn't look for her in Portland because she never comes out here!
I'll never say that again. Molly, I expect a complete rundown of the concert!

Subject: NN: Concert for a Landmine Free World - Oslo
   Date: Mon, 21 Jan 2002 20:48:28 +0100
   From: Georg (gvallest@c2i.net>

Yesterday was the day of the the Concert for a Landmine Free World
in Oslo, Norway. The first half was 1 hour and 20 minutes, including
Bobby Mullers speech. The second, and best part was 1 hour and 30 minutes
including two encore sections. A great concert, Mikes description of the
London concert can be used on this one too, so I'll just mension the songs.

Nanci's were:
St.Olavs Gate (of course)
Travelling Through This Part Of You
Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness
Goodbye New York (she mentioned that she finally had learned to play this song)
It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go, Emmylou on lead on one verse (first
encore set)

Emmylou's were:
The Pearl
Hour of Gold
Boulder To Birmingham
(I have a feeling she did one more, but I can't remember which one this
was, shame on me)

Duet with Elvis Costello on Sleepless Nights, and harmony
on Goodbye with Steve Earl

I had a perfect front row seat, 3rd seat from the center, and luckily it was
on Nanci's side, so she was sitting right in front of me.

This Friday, Norwegian radio will send the first part of 2 from the concert
she held in Oslo in November, the second part will be aired in March
(not the whole concert, probably 45-50 minutes).

Well said, Cate (and Ken).

It is encouraging (to me, at any rate, having spent 5 years working with Oxfam
International) to hear (global) social justice issues being voiced forcefully
by Americans, who, after all, have the most influence in these matters (and
who, to some of us, can at times nearly ALL seem like hawkish right-wingers,
lol).

Although I haven't had a chance to see any of the concerts, I am heartened as a
Nanci-fan that she and the others have dedicated themselves to this cause.
When you think about it, there can be very little in this (often) bad old world
that is more obscene than laying traps to blow off the limbs of children and
other innocent people going about their daily activities. Let's hope this
movement can help spread a sense of revulsion and so help put an end to this
practice - manufacturing and selling the things as well as laying them. But
with an estimated 10 million uncleared mines in Afghanistan alone (and that's
just one of their problems) you have to despair at the madness of it all.

First off, let me say quite forcefully that I SUPPORT Nanci and the others who
are seeking a landmine free world.
Then let me go on to say, even if I get flamed for it, that the desire for a
landmine free world should not focus on the US, but on the countries that use
landmines indiscriminately and far in excess of any US use. These countries
use mines because they are one of the cheapest and most effective ways to deny
access to enemy troops…or to civilians...to areas they want blocked off, and
because they often do not care about the suffering left over mines cause
civilians, even their own.
I would also like to point out that ONLY the US is making any effort at all to
develop landmines that can be remotely disarmed or exploded once the need for
them is gone so they will NOT be a danger to civilians after a conflict. We all
want a world free of conflict and danger...but realistically we have to work
with what we have to make it better one bit at a time. I just want the US to
get more credit for doing far more than its fair share in this effort.
Best to all,

voice on the EPA spot, and got a reply affirming your good ears. As Jim
noted, the producer of the spots died on United Flight 175.

I believe the following has been posted on the website:
>>>>>>>>>
January 22 - NANCI "CHANGES" FOR THE E.P.A.

Nanci is lending her voice to a public service announcement campaign for the
Environmental Protection Agency`s EnergyStar program. Called "Change," the
PSA`s encourage all Americans to protect the environment for future
generations by changing to energy efficient products and practices.

Last fall, Nanci and members of her Blue Moon Orchestra recorded the Eric
Clapton hit, "Change The World," for use in the campaign. The song is
appearing in a series of television and radio ads, which have begun to air
across the country.

I will resist the impulse to respond to your cheap jibe for three reasons -

1. It's clearly - and understandably - prompted by jealousy,
2. It made me laugh,
3. You regard "Shaking Out The Snow" as the true masterpiece that it is.

For the last point alone, you can be forgiven anything!

This track provoked mixed feelings from people on the NN, and seemed to be a
song that people loved or hated. The discerning few loved it :) but are in
the minority, although even those who hated it were impressed by Nanci's
superb interpretation of it - complete with artificial falling snow - at the
RAH on her recent tour.

I personally thought it was far and away the best number on CWH, and my
opinion hasn't changed. Yes, "masterpiece" is a word that I would use
without any hesitation at all.

A rhetorical question presumably? It has the same magic as the vast
majority of Nanci's recordings, combining flawless performance with a real
feeling for the lyrics - an excellent interpretation of a fine song.

I'm looking forward to hearing the re-mastered version of the OIAVBM album,
and seeing if it really does sound any different. I wonder if re-mastered
recordings are a bit like the Emperor's New Clothes - we're told that the
reissue has improved, better sound, so what we hear is improved, better
sound. Very cynical of me, and I'm very much hoping to be proved wrong!

Hi Folks --

You might remember that about a year ago I posted a link to a Smithsonian
archive of the original 19th century sheet music to "Are You Tired of Me My
Darling." There is a Rounder reissue of the Carter Family's version of the
song, but while surfing tonight, I found a Real Audio link taken directly
off the original Carter Family 78 rpm record. I thought some Nanci fans
might be interested -- it's at
http://www.honkingduck.com/BAZ/baz_display.php

The site is a treasure-trove of 683 early 20th century recordings. I've
been collecting 78s for years so I know that it's very difficult to find
some of the artists & songs available on this site.

I also want to invite everyone on the NN to our band's upcoming CD release
party. It will be in Knoxville, TN at Barley's Tap Room & Pizzeria next
Wednesday evening, Jan 30, at 9:00 PM EST. There will be a 45 min. radio
broadcast and webcast of our first set at http://www.wdvx.com. Also, for
those in this area, we'll be doing a live TV performance & interview on WBIR

Lynn will receive the honorary doctorate in arts at a ceremony during the
Society for American Music's 28th annual meeting March 6-10 on the

I can't believe he forgot to add the web address for Loretta...it is...
         www.lorettalynn.com/
I think it is one of the better sites as they have her song, 'Coal Miners
Daughter' plays...full length...when you visit. Uh, you do need to know that
it only plays on the main page though, if you start browsing the site you
lose the song.
As for Nanci content...well, I think Nanci, and every other female artist of
this generation, owes a lot to Loretta. She was one of, if not the first,
female singer/songwriter that broke the barriers to female writers that
existed in Nashville at that time.
And who knows, maybe one day Nanci will even do a cover or two...or three or
four!!! of some Loretta Lynn tunes. The only thing better would be the two
of them doing a song together.
;-)

So, anyone out there on the net who has Nanci's ear...put in a word for a
duet and you will have my undying gratitude, and maybe that of a few others
as well.
Best wishes to all,

I went to the site listed...and no sound...did I miss something or is there
a certain area at the site you have to go to?

If you go to www.wbr.com and scroll down to where it says:

NEW! From "The Captain," the album that won 2 Aust. Grammys & HBO's The
Sopranos. "Barricades and Brickwalls," Kasey Chambers' latest release, due
Jan. 29th.

and click on the link at "Kasey Chambers'", you should get another page pop
up. The second page has a big picture of Kasey carrying a guitar on a
street. Something of an Abbey Road inspired piece, maybe. Anyway, the sound
should come with this page. This is Shockwave Flash, so maybe you don't have
Shockwave? Or are you using Netscape? Maybe Navigator can't handle it?

Or try this link. It may work: www.wbr.com/kaseychambers/

Oh, and if you just get a black page with "Kasey Chambers" in blue
lettering, but nothing else, click on the blue lettered "Kasey Chambers".
See if that works.
