As Nanci shares the bill on June 27 (I think) at the House of Blues in
Anaheim, CA with Richard Thompson, could he be the special guest at
Knoxville in May?

Hi!
I'm a new NanciNet member, and a longtime fan of THE lady. After reading on
her official site about her upcoming live album, I wondered....
I wondered what she would include on the album, given all the different
songs she's been performing live over the last few years. So, assuming that
she would include between 10-16 songs on the record. I decided to list my
favorite 16 of the songs she's been performing recently (I couldn't get it
any lower!).
Which of these do you think would be good, and which would you eliminate (if
that's even possible)?
(in no particular order)
Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness
Two For The Road
Boots of Spanish Leather
I Wish It Would Rain
Last Train Home (?)
Goodnight New York
There's A Light Beyond These Woods
Listen To The Radio
What's That I Hear
White Freightliner (think she did this in UK)
Traveling Through This Part Of You
Gulf Coast Highway
Shaking Out The Snow (yes, I like this one)
I'm Not Driving These Wheels
Flyer
One Blade Shy of A Sharp Edge
- A BIG FANOFNANCI

Well, I'd eliminate GCH, only because she's already recorded it once too
often. Now, if it turns out her special guest is Jackson Browne, or James
Taylor, I'd reconsider :)
Truth is, Nanci doesn't seem to be performing my favorites lately.
I'm really looking forward to this DVD. I've mentioned my hope for a video
in the new format a couple times on the list, and I'm mostly wondering about
how it will look, and sound. I have a couple discs in my collection that are
just beautiful, and I'm hoping Nanci's dvd will be as good as, say, Andrea
Bocelli's "A Night in Tuscany", or JT's "Live at the Beacon".
I'm really partial to the era of LLA, S, LNGH, OVOR, F. Anything from those
albums would make me happy, but I suppose you're right and she'll probably
not do too many of her older things.
If I could have one wish on this DVD it would be that, at this stage in her
career, Nanci would perform "Goodnight to a Mother's Dream"

Does anyone know for sure whether this is going to be a video DVD or an
audio only DVD? Just curious.

Yikes...That oxymoron hadn't even occurred to me. I would sure hope that The
people who announced this would not have said "DVD" when they meant "audio
only DVD"

Doesn't the "V" in DVD stand for video? How can you have an "audio only
DVD"? That sounds like a CD to me.

Apparently the V stands for "Versatile". Digital Versatile Disk. (I'm not
making this up.)
There are such things as Audio only DVDs. I have one. The intent is (was?)
to have high quality sound. Like those Mobile Fidelity Gold Master recording
LPs. In this case, 96kHz/24bit recording instead of standard (at least at
the time) 44.5kHz/16bit. Anybody know if 44.5/16 is still standard for CDs?

"I wondered what she would include on the album, given

FANOFNANCI -- your "narrow" list is probably shorter than I would create.
Only change, I am sure "Where Would I Be Without You" and "Clock Without
Hands" will be on the live album. I am sure that the setup stories will be
part of the project album, too. I still laugh out loud at the setup to
"...Five and Dime" and "Trouble in the Fields" on One Fair Summer Evening.
(I chuckled as I got my Vanilla Coke from the machine at school last night.)
I would hope to find that "Goodnight New York" and "White Freightliner
Blues" make it on the Live project. Heard both of these at the Lenoir, NC
concert. "White Freightliner Blues" is reminiscent of earlier MCA days and
works like "Listen to the Radio" - a wonderful traveling song.
If the recent NC show is an indication, the set list will include a few
older songs that haven't yet been recorded on the recent collections like
Dust Bowl Symphony, except that "From a Distance" will probably be a good
intro or follow on to "Goodnight New York".
I am partial to "Never Mind", from the older works, since it mentions
"picking oranges in Orlando," so my long shot hope is that this song makes
the live project. And, "Drive-in Movies and Dashboard Lights" would be
wonderfully delightful, as well. See, that short list is way to hard to
create ... Nanci needs to make this Live project a Box Set.
Blessings,

I would be very surprised if this was an audio only disc.
1. The market for DVD audio discs is extremely small.
2. Nanci has yet to release anything in the DVD video format... she's due.
3. The concert is to help save a beautiful theater and concert venue...
seeing the theater on video would be more meaningful.
Of course, will be able to tell you the format after Wednesday's concert.
If we see video cameras we'll know for sure.

A couple of folks with Nanci connections were on Saturday evening's
Songwriter Sessions from Nashville Public Radio. This is a "songwriters in
the round" show, and Buddy Mondlock and Tom Kimmel were joined by Dave
Carter and Tracy Grammer. The show is archived for streaming for one week
at:
http://www.wpln.org/songwriters/songwriters.html
For the last four months, I've been publishing a free weekly e-mail
newsletter called "Fiddlin' Around." It's sort of a "TV/Radio/Web Stream
Guide" for roots based music. It also contains any roots music related press
releases I can get my hands on, and any really good websites I find.
Everybody who gets the newsletter seems to find it useful, but it's
unbelievably difficult to persuade folks to subscribe. For example, it seems
like every single person on the NanciNet should subscribe to the newsletter
almost automatically- without thinking twice about it. After all, you
usually only get one e-mail per week. This is not another discussion group
that's going to overload your Inbox, and it's not a spam generator.
The mailing list is hosted and managed by Topica, and they have a strong
privacy and anti-spam policy. If it turns out you don't like it, every
message has unsubscribe directions at the bottom.
The regular newsletter comes out on Thursday afternoon (or Thursday midnight
for you folks across the pond) but this week the new Songwriter Sessions was
so good that I sent out an extra message at 10 am Eastern time Sunday.
You can all subscribe by going to the website:

Thought this may be of interest.
Whilst I'm not in favour of, and nor would I condone, piracy I'm glad to see
this annoying protection has been defeated.
If I buy a CD I want to be able to play it in any music system I choose!
This protection has prevented at least two purchases, being played in a
Playstation (hey, it has good speakers!) and 1 of the discs doesn't play in
the car either. I'm certainly tempted to give this crack a try.
Any thoughts?

Subject: NN: A long musical weekend (next to no Nanci content)
From: "Ken Stiffler" (ksmsc@kmsx.net>
Date: Thu, 23 May 2002 00:21:51 -0400
This past weekend, I turned it into a long weekend and went to see Nerissa
and Katryna Nields (again) at Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA on Thursday
evening. Then moved on to see Eric Taylor (for the second time) at Happy
Endings in Syracuse, NY Friday evening. Then Vince Bell at The Depot Theatre
in Garrison, NY on Saturday afternoon and last, but not least, Kate Campbell
at the Montgomery Arts Center in Skillman, NJ on Sunday evening. This was
the first time I saw Vince and Kate.
There have been plenty of people post to NanciNet recommending each of these
artists. Well, maybe not so many recommending the Nields. They are a little
different style of music from what's normally talked about here. But I just
wanted to jump in here and add my two cents that ALL of
these artists are highly worth seeing if you get the chance.
Eric was even better the second time around and Vince and Kate were both "a
real treat". All three played for two hours or more and covered many of
their songs that I especially like.
No, Eric did not do Hemmingway's Shotgun this time. But when I hear Dean
Moriarty with this poetic, spoken word intro, I think about what Hemmingway
said about writing one true sentence.
Hearing Vince do The Sun The Moon and The Stars live was one of the
highlights of the weekend for me. I've always liked Nanci's version of that
song. It stands out on LNGH. Something about the structure of it seems to be
unusual, at least among the songs on LNGH, but I'm not musically
knowledgeable enough to know what is different about it. All I know is that
it's the one song on LNGH that I've never worn out. When I'm ready to move
on to some other CD, I could still listen to that one song one more time.
It was also nice to meet Sarah. It's rare that I get to meet real live
NanciNetters in person.
Kate was a pleasant surprise. Even after the humorous songs on her CDs, I
didn't expect her to be such a "character". It was a fun evening. And I was
very happy that she did Lanterns On The Levee, which is my favorite song of
hers. Now that I've seen Kate, maybe I should sign up for the Moonpie list.
Finally join that NanciNet "sister" list. :)
Another thing that has stood out in seeing all these artists lately
(including Lynn Miles the same night I saw Eric Taylor the first time) is
that their performance is primarily based on a single acoustic guitar
(though, for this show, Andy Revkin added some really nice slide and
mandolin to most of Vince's songs). Each one has a different style from the
others and each one is able to flesh out the songs and be entertaining. It
has been a real learning experience just watching them play. (Of course, one
act I've seen recently - The Kennedys - don't fit the single acoustic guitar
format. They have two. And one of those is being played by Pete Kennedy.
Which is a whole different world. Oh, you should go see The Kennedys now
while they're playing Johnny B Goode - with Pete singing "Maura Be Goode"
and Maura playing Chuck Berry riffs. The Kennedys are so much fun, some
places must have a law against them playing there. Their new CD "Get It
Right" is due out June 4th and includes their version of "Pearl's Eye View",
which Nanci and Maura
wrote, "Ride Angel Ride", which Nanci sings on, the hilarious "Why Winona
Why", and the utterly beautiful title song. www.kennedysmusic.com)
No doubt about it, I would definitely go see all of these artists again at
the first opportunity that comes along.
And one last thing: To top off a great long weekend, Monday morning I got
tickets for Nanci's show in Knoxville next week! :)
