Subject: NN: Nanci on The Kennedys' new CD
Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 12:42:15 -0400
From: "Ken Stiffler" (ksmsc@kmsx.net>
Nanci makes an appearance on the first song on The Kennedys' new CD "Get
It Right". The song is "Ride, Angel, Ride". It's not a major role, like
a full duet, but Nanci is distinctly present, doing a sort of
counter-point to Maura's main vocals. Nanci's vocal becomes primary
during the extended closeout, including the line "you've got a ticket to
ride". Pete and Maura also thank Nanci in the liner notes for giving
them their ticket to ride - a reference to when Nanci got them started
performing as a duo as her opening act while they were both part of the
Blue Moon Orchestra.
Nanci completists should certainly grab this one. It's very much a
unique Nanci appearance.
And anyone else who likes Byrds/Beatles/Everly Brothers influenced music
should also jump at this CD. Pete and Maura have gotten even better at
melding their 60s music influences into a coherent whole that is all
their own. Other prominent influences on this CD are Marvin Gaye and
(possibly) Sergio Mendez and Brazil 66. Anyway, there's some bossa nova
on this CD - I may be mis-remembering the SM+B66 sound (it's been
awhile, you know? :) ), so maybe that's not where the influence comes
from.
The song "Why, Winona, Why" - a two minute rock n roller ala The
Beatles' "Please Please Me" - is a hilarious expression of wonderment
over Winona Ryder's shoplifting incident. Also included is TK's version
of "Pearl's Eye View", which Nanci and Maura wrote. It's mostly similar
to Nanci's version, but Maura has a very different vocal sound and
style. And the title song "Get It Right" instantly became my favorite
Kennedys' song when I heard it live for the first time in December. Now
I can finally listen to it to my heart's content!
Right now, "Get It Right" has easily jumped to the lead in my Best of
2002 list. This is good old rock n roll at its finest.

I keep watching the concert schedule to see if a concert on Sept. 3 in
Arcata CA and Sept. 10 in Seattle might mean a stop in Oregon sometime
that week. What do ya'll think? I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!

Silence
It's been miserably quiet on here this week, so I find myself writing to myself
again.
Theories
Perhaps it's because America is fighting religious activists again, or perhaps
you are glued to your screens applauding your soccer team's magnificent
performance in the World Cup.
My agenda
Anyway, I've discovered my all-time favourite song of the year, and I've got to
tell the world.
Disclaimer
I take the risk that the only response may be that you discussed this 48 months
ago.
Taster
It came about when I decided to take just three cds with me on a trip this
week. One of them was 'Gretchen Peters', which I love more than ever, but the
other two were by the same person, inevitably a female American.
Competition
I wonder what three favourite cds other people would currently take on trips!
Puzzle-solution format: Part 1: the Puzzle
I wanted to listen more carefully to the acoustic cd of someone two of whose
cds I'd bought in a sale, after growing to love her other, large-scale rock cd
after realising the cacophonous first track wasn't typical of it.
Question
Why do people put one horrible track on an otherwise pleasing cd?
Build-up
Over the last few months I've come to realise that this singer is awesomely
talented on almost every level, and that I must devote my life to the worship
of her genius. Alternatively I could think about why I don't usually recognise
it when I see it.
Well then who is this paragon of American woman singers?
Part 2: the Solution
The acoustic cd that is so good is called 'Living with Ghosts' and the rock cd
by which I am so smitten is 'Flaming Red'; the track that has me so gobsmacked
and boggled is 'Tony', and the singer is Patty Griffin. The shock when I first
understood the words was one of those great experiences.
Is she a leggy potential blonde like all your other best of the year women? No!
Apparently she is a normal-looking human, so it is perfectly safe to like her.
Hurray, life is good again!

Considering I'm just about to leave on a few days trip, this is timely...
only three???
1) Reveal- REM
2) Time Sex Love- Mary Chapin Carpenter
(for some reason this album really works in the car)
3) A toss up between Flaming Red-Patty Griffin or Motherland- Natalie
Merchant.
I've sort of been on this "listen to music that I've shelved for no reason"
kick, hence the reason these three or four are in strict rotation.

1. Some guy whose name I forget, I dunno, wrote some songs Nanci
recorded. Old whatshisname.
2. Bruce Cockburn
3. Tom Waits
Happy summer,

For anyone who likes this type of music, I would heartily recommend
Patty's latest, "1000 Kisses," which is closer to "Ghosts" than it is to
"Flaming Red." It is a superb record. Also, the new Dixie Chicks album, due
in stores Aug. 27, will contain at least two Patti Griffin songs.

Subject: NN: Recommendation on Nanci in CA
Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 10:32:44 -0700 (PDT)
From: John Houser (jchouser@yahoo.com>
Hey Gang,
Any tips on which of two shows I'm considering this
summer in CA? There's a show at the Historic Mountain
Winery in Saratoga on 6/29 and a how at Galante
Vineyards on 9/1 in Carmel. I know that if I do the
Saratoga show, I could try to pull off the double dip
and see her again at the Kate Wolf show, but that is
unlikely enough as to not factor into consideration.
I'm working in San Luis Obispo now, so the midweek
show in Anaheim is out. Besides, Nanci at a winery or
vineyard sounds perfectly acceptable to me. I could
try pulling off both Saratoga and Carmel, but, again,
not very likely.
So, any advice from the folks North of me (or if
you've been to these places) will be appreciated...
Thanks kindly...
JCH

Hello again,
Definitely decided to go to the show in Carmel for
sure, maybe the one in Saratoga. No chance for the
Laytonville show, unfortunately.
For those considering it, I was caught by surprise by
the location - when it said Carmel Valley, I assumed
it meant fairly close to Carmel. Well, I suppose it is
relatively close, but not THAT close (almost an hour
driving from Carmel, apparently).
Here's the map:
http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&Pyt=Tmap&addr=18181+Cachagua+Rd&city=Carmel+Valley&state=CA&csz=Carmel+Valley%2C+CA+93924-9313&slt=36.391429&sln=-121.624035&Ds=n&mlt=36.387104&mln=-121.455511&zip=93924-9313&country=us&mag=6&cs=9&BFClient=&BFKey=&poi=&poititle=&map.x=136&map.y=207
That may be good news for folks coming from the south
if I can cut over easily from Greenfield. It could be
bad news as I've never been on that road if it's not
very good, I may have to swing through Salinas and 68,
then double back. I know, I know, I have a long time
to decide.
Hold on, I just got a little smarter and checked the
GV website for directions. It says from the South, go
to Salinas, 68, and double back. How unfortunate.
