Subject: NN: Nanci @ Humphprey's San Diego
   Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 18:23:55 -0700
   From: Kim Cline (threebf@pacbell.net>

Richard Thompson opened for Nanci @ the beautiful outdoor/Marina venue
called Humphrey's in San Diego last night. I was surprised that he
played over an hour by himself. What an incredible guitar player he is!
He oft times keeps a driving bass beat going with his pick and uses this
remaining three fingers to entertain us with his fast-paced melody
lines. He performed an impressive 52 Black Vincent among others with

which I'm not that familiar.
It was an unusual crowd last night. I think many came to see just
Richard Thompson and left when he was through. Nanci came out sounding a
little hoarse. She said she had just arrived from Colorado (the Rocky
Mountain Folk Festival?) and the whole state was filled with smoke and
her whole band was affected. She assured us she felt fine and I found
the hoarseness to be kind of cute. I was nonplussed with her first few
songs (set list similar to recent other concerts) until she pulled out a
wonderful oldie..."bring the prose to the wheels" or whatever the proper
name is... I was just floored. She seemed to have a fun time and I
loved hearing some new banter. The band had it's ups and downs.
Although I think James Hooker is the backbone of the Blue Moon Orchestra
I think he's done the same songs so many times, his creative variations
on the B3 are a little distracting. He did have a good showing of GCH
and TVZ White Freightliner as an encore. Two of my least favorite songs
of Nanci's are the Hammer song and From a Distance. When you listen to
her CDs a million times you FAD gets a little old. I've gotta tell ya,
she did From a Distance brilliantly. Very deliberate, slowed down, clear
phrasing. Added some foreign language and belted it out beautifully.
Hammer song still sucked.

All in all, it was great seeing her again. We all had fun.

Kim Cline

I got the new album of Nanci oldies, From A Distance, earlier today. I
haven't listened to it yet, but I'm still disappointed that my favorite
Nanci song, "So Far Away", isn't on it. It does have a pretty neat picture
of Nanci on the cover. I'm mainly writing this because I've had no NanciNet
postings for 2 days and I'm wondering if something is wrong.

Hello Nancinetter's and greetings!

I have been a subscriber to the NN for quite a while, but have just been a
"lurker", until now. This is because I usually put my postings, comments,
occasional rantings, etc on the http://NanciGriffith.com Message Board.
Unfortunately, there are just a handful of us that have continued to post
there, and the website itself is (as some of you may be aware) badly neglected.
Apparently, the days of the Message Board are said to be numbered. If this is
the case, how long before the same happens to the whole website?

I realise that the NN has been in existence for a long time now, and it
provides a great forum for all things Nanci (and many things not!). And long
may that continue. However, if the "official" website is to survive, PLEASE,
PLEASE, PLEASE start posting on the Message Board! I am sure that the NN and
the Message Board could happily co-exist, with the cooperation of all
concerned. If people started posting regularly, maybe the management,
administrators, artist, etc would reconsider their apparent apathy to the
website, as a whole.

So come on, people, take a look at the "official" site and start posting your
messages, if only to register your protest at the overall neglect of the site.

Having got that off my chest, I don't know how "file sharing" is looked upon,
on the NN, since the main system of sharing appears to be by way of the "weed"
method of sending out numbers of CD copies. However, I have recently posted a
message on the aforementioned site, explaining how a concert I have on CD can
be obtained through my "shared files". In short, it is from the same concert as
the "Love Affairs In A Foreign Town" CD, but with two extra tracks and much
better sound quality. If anyone would like to get a copy, read on. (Hope I'm
not breaking any NN rules, here). For ease, here is the relevant part of that
posting, "copied and pasted" into this e-mail...

"If anybody would like the aforementioned 1988 concert, I have it all on my
hard disk, in mp3 format. If you have "KaZaA" (the file-sharing software), you
can now download all 14 tracks, plus the artwork. (To see the full track
listing, go to my posting, on the message board, entitled "Nanci Live - 1988").
In KaZaA's "search" facility, type in Nanci Griffith - Lone Star State Of Mind
(which is the first track on the concert).

When the search result(s) come up (and assuming I am online) hover your mouse
over the item(s) and look for my user name, which is leonstolarski@KaZaA. Once
you have found the first track, right click and use the "Find more from same
user" facility, which will then list all of my shared files. The 14 tracks from
the "Live 1988" folder should be consecutive. You should also be able to get
the artwork, which I am sure should be there, also. (4 JPEG files - b1, c1, c2,
c3).

Just remember, if burning to a CD, to use the "disc at once" method, so that
the two-second gap is eliminated.

If anyone has any problems getting at these files, please feel free to e-mail
me. I also have other Nanci boots on my disc, but beware - at the moment, they
are still in WAV format, so would take ten times as long to download! If
anybody wants them, I will be converting them to mp3 shortly."

Regards to all

Hi Leon,

First off, I think it's great that your sharing the files and concerts.
Nothing I like better than trading the concerts and hard to find stuff
to supplement the commercially available recordings. However, IMHO (and
others) KaZaA is a nasty nasty nasty piece of spyware and security risk.
So I think I'll skip this offer.

As for the message boards, I've never even looked at them. The NN, is
the main forum for Nanci discussion and long may it stay that way. Too
many forums are distracting, there is (was - my old ISP canned the group
as it had not been posted to for over a year) a usenet group
alt.fan.nanci-griffith. Dead as a dodo.

Just for the record, Matt, I am using a version called KaZaA Lite, which, as
stated in their privacy statement, does not use spyware. I used Audiogalaxy,
until it went to the dogs, and I believe it did use spyware. I'm sure I
(unknowingly) use other applications which also use spyware.

I, like other computer users, experience occasional niggles with my PC, but
nothing I can't handle. After all, a few pop-ups are a small inconvenience,
when using what is otherwise a free way of (a) discovering new music and (b)
sharing otherwise unavailable concert recordings. It is also a convenient
way of getting your favorite stuff from your vinyl collection (for which
you have, remember, already paid your copyright) onto CD. But that is
another discussion matter...............!

And anyway, are pop-ups that much different to the old (and still prevalent)
annoyance of "telephone sales"? Yes, I know it is not just the pop-ups, and
there are things going on on our PC's that we would like to eradicate, but I
can live with them...until I am made to eat my words by some disaster or other!

Of course, if you can suggest another (what you consider safer) way of sharing
music such as I have, I'll be glad to make the effort. I am a member of a group
known as The Boss Collection, which uses a ftp server, to download (mainly) a
large selection of Springsteen "boots". If anybody can suggest a similar way of
sharing Nanci "boots", I would be glad to upload.

As to your comments on the "official" website message board (i.e. "let it
rot"), you display a somewhat insular, "we'll see-off all comers" type
attitude, which does little credit to you. I do hope it is not a general
"corporate opinion" of the Nancinet. Shame if it is, since there are dedicated
fans who care about every Nanci-connected site. It would be a shame if such an
attitude caused other sites to close. The more, the better, as far as I am
concerned.

Hi Leon,

I've responded to the non-Nanci stuff off list....

> (i.e. "let it rot")

Quote marks??? I did *not* write that. I said "I've never even looked
at them" (I haven't, I might).

I also said "The NN, is the main forum for Nanci discussion and long may
it stay that way."

Let me clarify that statement. The Nanci Net is a long established,
well managed and well supported forum for discussion of Nanci related
topics. There have been other ways (I cite the newsgroup as my example)
to exchange views on Nanci related stuff, but they've been unsuccessful.
Why re-invent the wheel?

> you display a somewhat insular, "we'll see-off all comers" type
> attitude,

I'm sorry you interpret it that way. It is not an insular attitude,
more a pragmatic one. Why have 3 different forums? Surely it's better
to have a well managed, one-stop-shop for information exchange and
discussion, better still a well established one that any fan with email
(not everyone has web access), can access and contribute to. Dare I
suggest that the reason the forums are not contributed to is the fact
that fans are all ready well catered for elsewhere (here)?

> which does little credit to you.

Ho hum.

> I do hope it is not a general
> "corporate opinion" of the Nancinet.

Well I speak for myself and myself only. My opinions are open to change
and discussion, but I try to call it as I see it.

> The more, the better,

Personally, I prefer quality over quantity.

I have long been a follower, and occasional contributor to this site. I
rarely surf the net and look at 'official' websites, I am simply not
interested and do not have the time. I have only looked at Nanci's
'official' website once and with the flash things happening I found it not
to my taste or indeed my needs. Therefore I will continue to 'hang
around' here, but will certainly not be posting on the message board.
There is a tendency for sycophants to clog up 'official' message boards
and any comments not favorable to the artist tend to be flamed. They do
not induce open discussion and that is not my personal opinion, but a
consensus amongst many different lists people.

One more won't make a difference, as the digests (and every sender's
email address) are publicly accessible on the web it's probable the
spambots have harvested them several times already.

Hello Matt

Point taken re the Quotes, but your message DID give the impression that you
(and maybe most other Nancinetters) would hardly give any other forum the time
of day. I see this as unfortunate, since it is surely an indicator of an
artist's popularity and standing that several of these websites exist. And
after all, if anybody cared to look, the official site DOES provide a link to
the NN FAQ. Is it fair that you and others should shun it, in return? Do you
view the other Nanci sites in a similar manner? I believe that these sites, The
Blue Roses Page in particular (which is my Nanci "Bible"), deserve more
attention.

When I first went online, about a year ago, the first Nanci Griffith website I
found was the official site. Having discovered others, including links to the
NN, I tried in vain to subscribe, with several attempts made over a period of a
month or two. Several months later, a final attempt was successful. However, in
the meantime, the official site's Message Board had become my forum for
discussion. And, for a while, there were many postings.

My point is that it is the fault of the artist, management etc that it is
apparently falling into disuse. The lack of attention lavished on the site
itself is quite staggering. But lack of attention by the followers of Nanci
maybe contributes to this.

Anyhow, if you would care to visit the Message Board yourself and read, in
particular, my recent postings under the "NanciGriffith.com" heading, you may
get more of a flavor of my balanced opinion. I am certainly not a
sycophant, and John "I always need a comment in between my Christian and
surname" Graveling's posting does not warrant a reply. I find his posts
particularly inane anyway.

And, in the final analysis, I was simply a true fan (is that word allowed on
NN?) trying to be helpful...

Shame on me.

Leon

// official site, in spirit, anyway.

I know there are a number of you out there who are Allison Moorer fans. I
have been listening to her new cd, "Miss Fortune" for the past couple of
days, and it is a real departure from "Alabama Song" and "The Hardest
Part". There is less 'country' in there, but plenty of r'n'b and soul, as
well as some, pretty close to, mainstream rock. What makes it different
are her supple vocals, which she can deftly bend around any lyric. This
is going to take some time to seep into the subconscience and worm it's
way into my affections. It is going to be one of those discs that slowly
unravels to reval the full extent of it's charms.

She would seem to be following the lead of her elder sister, Shelby
Lynne, is stretching out and not sitting still long enough to be
categorised in any one 'type' of music. Her U.K. tour starts in a weeks
time and the cd hits the stores July 8th.

This sounds good to me. Thanks for the heads up, John. I haven't heard a
release date for the States but I know Allison will be touring here in Sept
as I have tickets for the Ark show then.

On a somewhat related note, I saw Lee Ann Womack last weekend and she sang
several songs from her upcoming cd, to be in stores Aug 20. She, too, seems
to continue to branch out, with some Shelby-esque stylings. I was frankly
suprised how much I enjoyed Lee Ann's show, easily one of the best of 50-some
I've taken in so far this year. I'd live happily ever after if I never hear
her I Hope You Dance hit again (that is her FAD to me) but that song does not
reflect the majority of what Lee Ann has to offer. In keeping to form, the
new cd will have more Julie Miller covers--this time Orphan Train and I Need
You, the latter of which was a show stopper in concert. If you get a chance
to see Lee Ann, by all means go for it. And, guys, she's a lot prettier in
person than on those Sparkle TV commercials.

Looks like 2002 will be a great year for female "country" (to use the term
loosely) releases, with Allison, Lee Ann and Kelly Willis all set with new
product for us in the coming months. Kim Richey, too, though it remains to be
seen what her latest sound will be.

I believe the Allison Moorer disc may be out on August 6th in the USA.
She is doing a showcase in Nashville on Friday 2nd at 12th & Porter, so I
guess that is probably what is called a "cd release party"!!

I see in Billboard magazine they are now comparing the Allison of "Miss
Fortune" (her new disc) to Dusty Springfield.

Being in the right place at the right time is about to pay off for Sundilla.

We just happen to be on the way between Texas and North Carolina; Texas is
where Women in the Round on the Road is based, North Carolina is where they
are going to film a television special, and Auburn is where they are
stopping for the night. And since they'll be here, they're going to
appear at Sundilla.

Women in the Round on the Road has been in Auburn before, but this will be
even bigger than their previous shows. This time around, there are eight of
them. That's not a misprint-- EIGHT. Linda Lowe, Ann Armstrong, Ashley
Kozak, Lynn Langham, Aura Lee, Carla Maywald, Selia Qynn and Becky Smith are
established solo performers, but when they get together, they are
incredible. It's the closest Sundilla will ever come to hosting a
"supergroup," unless Quincey Jones records "We Are the World, Part Two"
here, and somehow I don't see that happening.

Between them all, you'll hear a variety of styles ranging from bluegrass to
country to blues, and everything in between; if you like it, chances are one
of them sings it. And if it's an instrument, chances are one of them plays
that, too. The words of the day will be "versatile" and "variety." Other
words to keep in mind are "can't miss," "extravaganza," and "be there or be
square." Well, maybe not that last one, but something along those lines.

Women in the Round on the Road will be appearing on Saturday, June 29 at
8:00 PM. With eight of them taking the stage, you'd think you'd have to come
up with a barrelful of cash to attend. But no-- admission for this show is
only $10, and only $8 if you get tickets in advance. There are a limited
number of advance tickets available, though; you can reserve them by
emailing me at baileyjones@mindspring.com, or calling 821-2546 (leave a
message.) As usual, kids 12 and under get in free. There will also be the
usual free coffee, tea, water and food, though you are welcome to bring
whatever food or beverage you'd prefer. All the info you need can be found
at www.sundilla.org.
