Subject: NN: Listenin' to the CD player
Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 21:14:29 -0700 (PDT)
From: "Bill Page" (bpage3@yahoo.com>
So tonight I loaded the CD player with discs I had not played in some time.
The general theme was "CDs by people I like that I never really gave a
chance when I first got them:"
Nanci's "Clock without Hands"
Kate's "Rosaryville"
Iris' "The Way I Should"
Lucy's "Every Single Day" (?)
Mountain Soul (The Kimbro's) "Trotline" (actually, this didn't fit the
theme; I've played it a bunch)
Impressions:
1. It's amazing how much better I like the first four CDs listed now than I
did when I first got them, especially "Rosaryville" and "Clock."
2. The Kimbros can stand up to any of the rest of them for musicality and
production values -- and hang in pretty well in the songwriting sense, as
well.
3. It's time for Iris to release a new CD.
4. Kimbro's son and his son's buddy are hellaciously good players for
teenagers...for adults, too
5. I'm ready to see Kate again...and ready for her new CD.
Folks, if you don't have Kimbro's CD, you really oughta get it - especially
if you like roots music at all (who need the "Down from the Mountain" folks,
anyway!?).

and when's AMY gonna get a record deal?
// someone asked who all of the first names represented...
// Nanci Griffith, Kate Campbell, Luck Kaplansky, Iris Dement,
// and Amy McKibin...[BP]

Is anyone out there looking forward to ...
Nickel Creek. THIS SIDE. Sugar Hill. 8/13/02
Allison Moorer. MISS FORTUNE. Universal South. 8/13/02
Kelly Willis. EASY. Rykodisk. 9/10/02
Elizabeth Cook. HEY Y'ALL. Warner Brothers. 8/27/02
Kim Richey. RISE. Lost Highway. Oct.?/02
Kathy Mattea. ROSES. Narada. 7/30/02
and perhaps the most exciting of all...
Eva Cassidy. IMAGINE. Blix Street. 8/20/02
(after the rather dismal METHOD ACTOR--a very questionable release--who
will be able to resist Eva doing "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" and "Early
Morning Rain" and "Danny Boy?").

I am much looking forward to the Kelly Willis, but the release date I have
for it is Aug. 20.

Subject: NN: You are so Nashville if...

From: "Tony Cox" (tonycox@pacific.net.au>
Couldn't resist sharing a bit of humour I stumbled on while
looking for something else.
There's a page on the Nashville Scene site with the results
of a competition where readers were asked to finish the
sentence:
"You are so Nashville if..."
OK, so some of the answers are lost on someone like me
without the local knowledge, but there are plenty more which
have left me with a pretty good idea of what supposedly
makes the good citizens of Nashville tick! Here are a few
of my favourites:
You are so Nashville if:
You came here because of the music business and now you're
leaving for the same reason.
You answered a Singles Scene personal ad and wound up on a
date with your ex-husband.
You spent more time dressing for the Frist Center than
touring it.
You support historic preservation, just not the historic
building you own.
All your plural's have apostrophe's.
You've dated a waitress from Waffle House, or at least
considered it.
You really miss the pest strip on the ceiling of Rotier's.
You don't see anything funny about this year.
And Nanci hangs out here??! No wonder she drinks! There are plenty more
such gems at this link - dozens of them, in fact, so if you enjoy a good
therapeutic laugh at someone else's expense, check them out at:

Tony "aren't *other*people funny?" Cox
(How about that - emphasis asterisks inside quotes! Is that
a first on this list? Or just a case of too much punctuation?)

Subject: NN: What do they do backstage?

I don't often post stuff here, especially if it's non-Nanci related, but a
friend of mine forwarded this to me the other day. It's so funny that I
thought I'd share it with you all, especially the musicians on this list.
It's a web site that contains riders from concert acts that contain requests
for what the acts want backstage. Some of this stuff is hilarious. Enjoy.

Came across a young Chinese chap playing this instrument in our town centre
today. What I found interesting was that it only has one string.
There is a picture and a sound clip of the instrument's haunting sound here:

Thought some of you might be interested in Dolly
Parton's new release "Halos and Horns". This superb
rendering was released on Tuesday, July 9th. Dolly
wrote 12 of the 14 tunes herself and I think this is
some of her best material in years. Standouts are
"These Old Bones", "Not For Me" and "Hello God".
"These Old Bones" is another flaw-less story song
which we have come to love from Dolly. Although I
liked both of her previous bluegrass efforts, this
collection seems more natural and soothing. This is
some of the best music she has performed in years.
Dolly will be performing live at the House of Blues in
New Orleans, LA on Sunday July 29th. As of last week,
tickets were still available for $47.50. I intend to
be "right up front" for Dolly's show and will post a
set-list and mini review here on Nancinet.
Also, for those interested, Wynonna will perform live
at the Grand Casino in Biloxi, MS on Saturday, August
3rd. Seating is reserved but tickets are still
available. I was fortunate enough to get seats on the
5th row. This is very exciting as I have never seen a
live Wynonna performance before. Will post details!!!
My friends in Jackson, MS are envious of the concerts
to which I plan to attend this summer. So far this
summer, I have seen Nanci twice, with Dolly, Wynonna,
Cher & Cyndi Lauper yet to come. I plan on adding at
least one more event to the list most probably in late
September. Possibly, Olivia Newton John in Atlanta! :)
I have officially christened this the "Summer of Love
Tour - 2002". Most friends are getting a kick out of
that!
