NanciNet Digest 7-19-02 (supplement)

// Folks, this morning I whined about the lack of messages on the list.
// Five minutes later I got Ron's note about the passing of Bill Peete.
// I was forcibly reminded that the reason this list has been so
// important to me for nearly eight years is the people, the community.
// I met Bill and Sue once, in Atlanta about two years ago.
// They had come all the way from California to join us.
// Within minutes of meeting them I felt I had known them forever.
// Dawn-Marie had met them six years ago at Kerrville; many of us remember
// the episodic travelogue that Bill provided for that motorcycle trip
// from California to Texas (and back).
// Like almost all of the people I've met from this list, Bill and Sue
// are the kind of folks you'd want to have for next door neighbors.
// Every Christmas for several years Bill organized the tape exchange.
// They have been generous with their support of the Candlelist, and
// they expertly designed and managed the "unofficial" nanci site,
// which most of us believe is significantly better than the official one.
// This digest supplement is primarily made up of messages of condolence
// and sadness. Susan Krauss has provided a copy of a newspaper article
// about Bill's accident; she has also been in contact with Sue, and
// will pass along further news about the arrangements as they are made.
// If you would like the Peete's address for cards and letters, send me
// a private note at bpage3@earthlink.com .
// ...
// Finally, the last two notes in this digest concern another tragedy
// in the folk music world, the untimely passing of Dave Carter.

I heard from a friend this morning that Bill Peete had been killed in a bike
accident yesterday. This really hurts my heart.

I know that Bill and Sue have many friends on the NN and I thought you
should all know. Bill & Sue were among the very first NN'ers I met many
years ago, and although we only met at a couple of Nanci shows like the Fat
Fry and Kate Wolf festival, I just thought the two of them were so full of
life and fun. They made the NanciNet "real" to me.

This is a very sad time and my heart goes out to Sue and my prayers are
there for them.

I am stunned by this news. My heart and prayers go out to Sue and her
children.

I spent many hours with Sue & Bill and concerts at the Freight & Salvage in
Berkeley, at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, at Villa Montalvo, etc.
Sometimes they'd bring one of their kids. They were also the most friendly
and helpful - especially when I traveled to the RMFF by myself. I have
several pictures of them - I just found one the other day of the two of them
next to Bill's motorcycle - FLYER.

Here's the article from today's San Jose Mercury News. I'll try to call Sue
later and get info on the funeral and any charity wishes.

SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS
JULY 19, 2002
Scotts Valley bicyclist dies in crash with truck

A bicyclist was killed Thursday afternoon in a traffic collision where timing
proved fatal, police said.

The medical examiner's office identified the cyclist Thursday night as
50-year-old William Peete of Scotts Valley. Police did not release the name of
the driver involved in the fatal accident because no charges have been filed
against him.

"We're not sure who was at fault," said San Jose police spokesman Joseph
Deras.

Officers were called at 12:47 p.m. to the 4200 block of Zanker Road near
Highway 237, where the collision occurred. Moments before, the cyclist was
traveling southbound on Zanker Road with a group of six to 10 other cyclists
when he was struck by a Nissan pickup truck, Deras said. The truck driver
attempted to pass the group of cyclists, crossing the double yellow line,
when, for unknown reasons, the cyclist "made an abrupt left turn . . . into
the path of the truck," Deras said.

I just got off the phone with Sue Peete. They haven't released Bill's body
because they're still doing an investigation. She didn't even know what kind
of truck hit him until she read it in the newspaper (the police just told her
a truck - she didn't know if it was a semi or a pickup truck).

She doesn't know when the funeral will be yet. I'll call her later today to
see if they have any details yet.

I have her home address which I don't want to post on a public list. If you
email me directly, I will send the address to you.

I too am very sad to hear that Bill Peete died. He was a special presence
on the NanciNet and my heart goes out to Sue and his family. Thank you for
letting us know. Does anyone have an address for the Peete family, so that
we can send sympathy cards/notes?

Another Bill memory. Years ago, I volunteered at AOL monitoring the country
boards. I became online friends with Nanci's then tour managaer and when
Nanci came to Santa Cruz, he gave me two back stage passes. Since the Peete's
were the biggest Nanci fans I knew, I told them that one of them could go.

Sue let Bill go, knowing how much it would mean to him.

We were warned that Nanci wasn't showing up to the after-show gatherings but
she did that night. And Bill got to meet her, get an autograph (which I think
is what was reproduced on his motorcycle). I'll never forget how excited and
happy he was that night.

to join us. Bill will be missed.

So much of why I continue to log onto Nancinet comes not just from Nanci's
music but from the email contacts from a special group of caring and sharing
people I feel I've gotten to know. The Peetes are high on my list of such
people. I'm sitting here stunned with no idea of what to say.

To not find any messages from Bill will change the way I feel when I log-on
for some time to come. I think back with fondness on the few messages we
personally exchanged, the music he shared with me, and his enthusiasm and
dedication to the holiday tape exchange he handled each year. His presence
here will be missed...

Sue and family, please know that there are many, many folk you've never met
that share in your grief over Bill's death. Bill, Godspeed to you.

First of all, deepest sympathy to the Peete family. Although I never met
them, they felt like friends. I'm sure many feel the same. I hope all the
good memories eventually outweigh the sorrow we feel now.

Otherwise, I'm just passing along information about Nanci's concert in
Seattle on September 10: It is at Benaroya Hall (the ritzy new home of the
Seattle Symphony), and tickets go on sale by 'net and phone on August 12.
See seattlesymphony.org for the phone number. (No, I don't work for them, or
anyone else for that matter.)

The last two times I've seen Nanci here were at outdoor venues and both
times it was raining (insert your own obligatory Seattle rain joke here), so
I'm really glad that she and the other musicians will be warm and dry this
time!

I was, like everyone else, completely stunned when I opened up my email this
afternoon and read the news.
I met the Peete's in Austin a few years back and had the pleasure of their
company for dinner and an evening of Nanci at Bass Hall. It was a magical night
and I always treasured getting to hang out with Bill and Sue and the others.
They seemed a wonderful loving couple full of music and the magic of Nanci.

Like me and my friend it was their first trip to Austin and we swamped notes
about the landmarks of "Nanci-lore" we had both stopped at. We also got to
talk with the Peetes at the dinner thrown for Mark Feguson the day before, when
he was awarded with the Nanci-net plaque the group had had made for him. Bill
and Sue were just the nicest of people and this is such a loss that it's hard
to comprehend, here, miles away from
that time and place.

Sue, my thoughts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with you on this night.
He was a special guy.
I just know he caught that blackbird's wing out of town and somewhere he's
enjoying all the Shiner Bock he wants to his heart's desires.
