I first met Bill and Sue at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival in 1997. It
was a year that Nanci was headlining Saturday night.

On the third weekend of August each year, Bill and Sue load up their
motorcycle, 'Flyer' and head for the Folks Festival in Colorado. 2,684
miles round trip. They stop and meet up with friends that live along the
way. We get a complete trip report of the storms they survived, the people
they visited and the places they stopped. We all catch up on what has
happened in past year and we're ready for the music. There's about 8 to 10
of us on a non Nanci Year.

There is always a long line in the morning to get in the festival. The
festival operators lead 30 people at a time into the festival grounds, so
you can reserve space to sit for the rest of the day. It starts out as a
walk but at the end your running as fast as you can. Bill's physical
conditioning has always been a big advantage for us. I have a difficult
time keeping up with him.

Bill has always set up his work day in California so he could ride his
bicycle 25 miles each day during lunch. He was in excellent condition for
a 50 year old. He competes in the senior division when he enters races.

Once the 'land rush' was over, we all walk to the other side of town(3
blocks) to Andrea's for breakfast.
When the food was served, Bill pulls out his special Hot sauce and
generously covers his eggs with it. What ever he orders, it will always
include a side order of bacon and he makes sure that no one leaves any
bacon on their plate.

On that Saturday in 1997, I told Bill that Nanci was going to do a taping
of an E-Town radio program in Boulder on Sunday. Within 5 minutes he had
talked to all the NanciNetrs and using his cell phone, called the theater
and ordered tickets. Everyone skipped the festival on Sunday and went to
the taping at the Boulder Theater, where we all sat in the front row with
Bill in the center.

I will always remember his permanent smile, generosity, and kindness.

I have collected my photos of the funeral and a few from the Folks Festival
last year on a CD. If you would like a copy, send me your address
off-list. I'll be back home on Monday.

There were many people at the funeral, maybe 150 total. Family, biker
friends, neighborhood families, a few of us internet friends.

The day was California coast perfect, a few fluffy clouds, cool breeze
and warm sun. I arrived about a half hour early and recognized no one
but Sue.

The chapel was packed, people standing at the back. After some
preliminary words by (a Jesuit priest?) people came forward and spoke.
20-odd people spoke, including the two who were riding with Bill when
he died. A neighbor wife talked about ordering some work on the joint
driveway, and then being chewed out by her husband... but Bill smiled
and thanked her and reached for the checkbook. A friend of his teenage
daughter talked about visiting him the day before he died, getting
help with a new computer. Biker friends talked about his fierce
competitiveness in races. Family-in-law talked about how he opened his
heart to them. Everyone mentioned his smile.

Susan Krause went forward and showed them 16 pages of email
condolences from his world.std.com friends. Another fellow had met
them at RMFF in 1997 and loved the stories about riding through the
rain.

I almost spoke, which would have been about the CL effort to raise
money for Maggie Heeney. I felt intimidated by all the strangers and
didn't.

Near the end, the chapel played Nanci's "Flyer", a CD with a "scratch"
that everyone ignored. The 23rd psalm was in there somewhere and some
kind words by the priest.

Afterwards I spoke briefly with Sue. She hugged me and expressed
sorrow that we had gotten together infrequently (maybe 5 times in the
last three years.) I told her I was so happy to know Bill and her. She
looked very tired, cried-out, but with a lot of strength.

It has been interesting reading all the posts from people who knew Bill.
They confirm the impression of Bill and Sue that I received just through
the intermediary of NanciNet and CandleList. Very positive people who
reach out to those they come in contact with and who get things done.
Good things.

As the years go by and I get a little older (and a little older, and...),
my appreciation for people who show a positive attitude to the world
around them grows. Just as I appreciate competence - a job well done, I
appreciate a good attitude - a smile, an uplifting word, a beneficial
act.

Me, I try to take these lessons to heart - to do a good job on whatever
the task is at the moment, to be ready with a smile or a helping hand,
to *live* my life. Though I don't always do as much as I think I should
(to put it mildly!), it's the example set by people like Bill and Sue
and it's seeing the impact that those people have on those around them
that makes me work harder at it.

To Bill, Sue, and all who try to do a little more to make your own
little piece of the world a better place: You DO make a difference, and
the effects ripple outward, far beyond what you can see.

I'm sorry I never got to meet Bill in person. Even so, he'll be missed.

Hello Nanci Listers,
I'm new to this list but I've been a Nanci Griffith fan for years. Last
year on September 10th 10:00am I had the first step of dental work done
because a tooth cracked right through down the middle and the dentist had a
hell of a time. After the hammer, chisel, pliers, and whatever other tools
were used, the tooth came out. Then he stuck some filler stuff in there to
get ready for an implant for later. That night I saw Nancy Griffith in
Lakewood OH Civic Auditorium, otherwise know as Lakewood HS Auditorium.
Getting up between songs because of extreme loss of blood. But the show was
great regardless...although, for me, the song 'If I Had A Hammer' had it's
own unique meaning. Her voice was beaming, her new tunes were great, she was
funny, and told allot of stories about her involvement in world free
landmine, Eric Taylor, all her favorite songwriters, and all the things she
likes to talk about. And the next day was Sept. 11. and our whole nation was
in shock, and anger.
Well, now I'll stop ramblin' and ask if anyone knows if Todd Snider is on
the same bill as Nanci Saturday night? I'm also a big Todd Snider fan
(Sh*thousers we are known as) and it would be excellent if Todd is opening
for Nanci. I already have tickets to this show, but seeing Todd would make
it all the more be excellent. Anybody here any word on this?

Andy -- welcome to this list. You will not regret becoming part of our
little family here. Did you ever get your implant?

Thanks Donate. The tooth: I had a bad reaction to the filler stuff that
caused a major allergic reaction for over six months. Then I got gun-shy
with the dentist.... so no implant. But its a back molar (SP?) so it doesn't
ruin the smile. So how did Nanci Griffith make out in Kosovo, anyone know? I
give her alot of credit for even thinking about visiting over there.
