Not to start another weed (because I can't organize it), but I'm looking for
a copy of Nanci's performance at the Kate Wolf Festival (for the
anti-bootleggers on the list - this festival allows taping and even airs the
entire festival on an FM band so you can record directly).
Because of my partner's impending surgery (next Thursday - please light
candles and send prayers), I wound up leaving my blank mini-discs on the
living room floor.
So I'm looking for Nanci (and Kathy Mattea)'s performances from the
Festival. My partner loved them both and I'd like to have the recordings
for her to listen to during her recovery.
I know there will probably be lot of interest and perhaps someone with a bit
more time can help organize getting this out to everyone. I'm willing to
copy once we're through the surgery/hospital stay etc.
Thanks in advance,

Gotta love that line: "It was his career or mine."
Not to mention Shindell's "Reunion Hill" and arguably
"Money for Floods." Anyone remember the story about
how he didn't want Joan Baez excluding from
consideration from her "Gone from Danger" recording so
the ex-seminarian wrote a few songs from a female
perspective? What a great song his "Nora" is, too.
Pierce Pettis expresses a similar fullness of
perspective in "Family" and his several songs about
grace.
Then we have the two guys who wrote that song Griffith
recorded on OVOR, but "it took two of them" to achieve
a female perspective.
Can Joni Mitchell's "Underneath the Streetlight" or
"Two Grey Rooms" or "Sire of Sorrows" qualify for a
Victor/Victoria award?
I've got to stop. It's the end of the summer and i'm
teaching ML King, Abraham Lincoln and Oedipus Rex
tomorrow (in that order).

I very much enjoyed Janis's last album "God and the FBI," in particular the
song "Play Like A Girl." If you haven't been there, Janis runs her own
website, and it's quite enjoyable www.janisian.com

ANOTHER recording of "Gulf Coast Highway"?
ANOTHER recording of "Mary Margaret"?
These are both great songs, but I would have thought the versions of each
Nanci has already released enough. This'll be the 4th Mary Margaret.

Mea culpa, apologies to everybody including Nanci.
The two official releases of TLBTW(MM) are:
One on THERE'S A LIGHT BEYOND THESE WOODS (MARY MARGARET)
One on LONE STAR STATE OF MIND
There's another on a bootleg of a live concert that I've listened to so many
times I misremembered it as a legit release.
I've also heard GCH on a couple of booted live concerts so I get the idea
that it's been often released when really there's only the two versions (I
think).
Now that I remember neither of these have been officially released in live
versions, it doesn't seem as strange to me.
Thanks Christina.

That's one of the drawbacks to a long career in music. You do a career
retrospective after you've had some hits or after you've had five or ten
years recording, then you go on making new music and, finally, it gets to
where that first career retrospective only covers half (or less) of your
career, so it's time to do a new one. What do you do? Leave out all those
early career highlights? Well, you could do something like a "Best of,
Volume II", but then people have to buy two recordings to get the top
highlights of your whole career.
After all, Nanci *could* have retired when she claimed she was going to, and
we wouldn't be getting another version of Gulf Coast Highway, but then, we
wouldn't be getting White Freight Liner (to take one example), either. And,
besides, this is the first recorded version of Gulf Coast Highway with James
doing the duet, isn't it?
I guess that, for all that I was somewhat disappointed by Clock Without
Hands, overall, I'm taking the attitude that any recordings that Nanci
releases post Other Voices Too are an added bonus to all her truly great
older material.
And, speaking of truly great older material, have I mentioned that the
version of "Old Land You Are Holy" (which was later renamed "The Road To
Aberdeen") from the Nashville Now TV show that is on the Poet In My
Television Volume Six tape is maybe the single most compelling reason I've
come across to refer to Nanci as a "great" musical artist? I watch that and
I get chills. That performance belongs in some story out of myth or out of
the middle ages, with King Arthur's knights and tales of chivalry and
traveling minstrels. It doesn't even seem to belong in this modern, real
world at all. Which, considering the subject matter of the lyrics, just
doubles the effect.
Nanci is an Artist.

And Nanci's NOT young and gorgeous? (Be careful how you word your reply; it
appears that some of our fellow NN'ers are quite red-blooded, ARDENT
admirers)(Not that I disagree; anyone -- male or female -- with half of
Nanci's attributes would be one hell of a good 'catch') (IMHO, anyway).
BTW, I had the great good fortune to hear (and see) Nanci play at Big Top
Chautauqua, in Bayfiled, WI, last month; the concert was FANTASTIC (as
always), and there wasn't a bad seat in the house. Full report to follow,
when I have time...
Also, as regards the 'Ark' weed, and recent criticisms that recipients
weren't fulfilling their obligations to distribute it: I (and possibly
others?), never saw the original requirements that stipulated this. I'd be
most happy to provide my obligatory copies (anything in the service of
Nanci!), as soon as I find a CD burner that is Mac-compatible. (I've been
searching locally, but no luck yet. Any good recommendations out there?)

Oh yes Christina there is a 3rd version legitimate release...on the CD set
Kerrville - the Early Years (Silverwolf records) now out of print.
However, perhaps what makes it seem so familiar to many of us long time
fans...
TALBTW, on the LP of the same name, was released on a Featherbed Records
before coming out on a Philo LP...
Then there was the original Philo/Rounder CD release in 1986 followed by the
newly remastered version in 2002 (sounds great!)
Of course there's the classic live version on OFSE...
and the many reissues on "best of" compilations...
The MCA Years: A Retrospective (Best of Nanci Griffith in UK)
20th Century Masters - The Millenium Collection
From A Distance - The Very Best of Nanci Griffith
So even if you are a Nanci Griffith fan from the CD era alone, you probably
have 3-6 copies of the song TALBTW in your collection (albeit two versions
for most).
I know how Reid feels... There are a handful of Nanci's songs that keep
showing up (IAHLWYG is the most obvious) while she neglects some of her
great back catalog of songs. I'd rather hear either a brand new song or
some new take on something more obscure when she revisits early material.
Why not start a thread of the one song (ONE!!!! NOT THREE OR FIVE) not among
her "hits" that you'd love to hear her re-record. Also it can't be a song
that already appears in more than one version... counting any legitimate CD
release. However if its a song that only appeared on vinyl you can include
it. Such as her first songs on B.F. Deal Records. Comments can go to the
list and I'll keep a tally but if it gets too busy Bill can step in and have
you send your response directly to me.
I'm not disciplined enough to come up with one tune at this point so I'll
just sit back and see what you all come up with ;-).
BTW you can check out the many appearances of Nanci's music at my web
site... http://pages.preferred.com/~chesman/ngmain.html

Hey Reid, I goofed also in listing the Mary Margaret from OFSE CD when I
should have remembered it was in the video only.

Ok. I'll bite. I would love to hear a re-vamped version of "Trouble With
Roses" from Poet in My Window.
a bit of a tough choice as I was thinking a symphonic version of Goodnight's
to a Mother's Dream might be swell, but I went with something older.

This is a hard one because the songs that stand out are the ones that are so
good in the original version that who needs another version?
On the other hand, I'm gaining an ever greater appreciation for hearing
multiple versions of the same song - by many artists, not just Nanci.
So. . . One song. . . Ummmmmm. . . .

From: "John Graveling" (kai21@dial.pipex.com>
I remember at the end of the legendary CSNY "4 Way Street" live album Graham
Nash announcing they wanted quiet as they were going to play some "wooden
music".
Listening to two new discs today has brought that feeling back again. First
off Kelly Willis "Easy' is a well crafted disc full of gentle acoustic
tales. The playing is fine, the singing simply great and the songs are,
mostly, gems. It is quite far removed from the dense, more electric sounds
Kelly came up with on her rather fabulous last effort, "What I Deserve".
Second up is a bluegrass disc to savour. "Home" by the Dixie Chicks is
superb. The singing, the harmonies in particular simply soar. The
instrumentation is magic, these girls really can play. Top that off with the
ability to pick great songs from outsiders to supplement their own writing.
Here we have Darrell Scott's "Long Time Gone", Bruce Robison's "Travelin'
Soldier" and two gems from Patty Griffin, "Top Of The World", and possibly
the best thing I have ever heard from Patty, "Truth No.2". Radney Foster and
Tim O'Brien also contribute to the songwriting.
I will heartily recommend both discs to people who like acoustic music,
beautifully sung, well played and bristling with energy.
