Just a few words tonight because my eyes are tired and my fingers are sore
(but my heart is still singing)...
Had a lovely time listening to Nanci tonight. Celebrity Theater is a great
place to catch an artist like Nanci- it's intimate and small and has a real
club sort of feel to it. At least from where I was sitting :) (4th row).
Nanci looked as angelic as ever and sounded just as sweet even with the our
high desert air playing havoc with her pipes.
She's a ball of energy, our Miss Nanci, that much is true. From skipping off
the stage to wailing like a finely tuned banshee on Outbound Plane and I
Wish it Would Rain, she doesn't disappoint with her southern drawl and
wonderful little tidbits in between the songs. She's a wonder to behold.
This was my 4th time. And I have to say even though I've heard most of the
songs 7 ways to Sunday and over and over, it never seems to be enough when
the night is through. You always want her to stick around and do_one_more.
That one favorite song in your heart of hearts you want her to do. You want
to see her smile at you just one more time. And hit that note as clear as a
bell as she throws her head back and belts it out.
Yes. I have stars in my eyes. But it's okay because it's Nanci and she's all
that and sliced bread. Even after all these years.
there is a light beyond My woods and it's Nanci Griffith.

Hi all,
I'm a five year lurker and finally have reason to post. Nanci is coming to
my town and of course I have a major work commitment the same night (this
Thurs.). I am wondering if she has had anyone opening for her on the tour.
The concert hall doesn't know and I have been in a deep funk thinking that
I'll miss the beginning of the show. Does anyone know if there's an opening
act??

Leaving the Harbor - although I doubt she could improve upon the original.
It's one of several lesser-known songs from this period that I think are
excellent.

Hey folks --
Just back from a whirlwind weekend to Toronto. It's a
fun city and we even managed to find some great music.
Friday night, near midnight, Amanda and I rolled into
a quaint little Italian Restaurant in St. Catherines
in time to catch a couple of sets by Steve Goldberger
and band. We enjoyed both the music and the company,
Steve, the guys in the band, and some of their friends
made us feel right at home. Steve even did "Ford
Econoline" and some bluegrassy stuff for us! We also
heard some of Steve's original tunes which were
excellent. Steve sent us on our way with a couple of
CDs and directions to Niagara Falls. You really
should see the falls about 3:00 AM. That's when it
gets really dark, and the fog rolls in, and the only
other tourists there were a family of raccoons. On
the drive back to Toronto, and again on the flight
back to Tennessee, we enjoyed listening to Steve's
CDs. (I especially enjoyed "The Niagara On The Lake
Rhythm Project.") We're looking forward to his new
one, and happy to have made a new friend. More proof
that, no matter where you go, you always have friends
when you share interests in good music.
All my best,
-Shawn
PS: I'm just now hearing Nanci doing "Tower Song" on
WDVX. - Once again, what a great song!

Hi everyone,
I'm delighted to say that on Friday night I had the pleasure of meeting
Shawn and Amanda Kimbro. The night before, Shawn emailed me to see if I was
playing anywhere within 100 miles of Toronto, and if so, they'd drop in to
say hello. How cool is that? I couldn't believe it. After all these
years of reading fellow musician Shawn's posts, I was quite excited that
they would be in our neck of the woods.
Anyway, I didn't really expect that they'd show, but low and behold, they
snuck into the joint at some point during our second set and introduced
themselves on the break. What swell folks they are and we had no shortage
of stuff to talk about.
In the next set I "stumped the band" (as I love to do) with Nanci's " Ford
Econoline". Later, I invited Amanda up to sing (unfortunately Shawn didn't
have his guitar with him) and she did an amazing version of Stormy Monday
blues. What an excellent, full and powerful voice she has. Amanda, if
you're out there reading this, anytime you have a gig up here in Canada,
I'll be your bass player!
I suggested that since they'd never seen Niagara Falls before, that they
should check it out as we were only 20 minutes away, and at 1 am, off they
went! (The falls are all lit up at night and it is a sight to see. One of
the 7 wonders, and all.)
Anyway, as you can probably tell, I'm still thrilled to have met such nice
people and hope to see them again sometime.
Cheers,
Steve Goldberger sg@stevegoldberger.com

The other day I was checking to see what Nanci's
new CD/DVD release would be selling for on the
major online music/video retailers. Yet for some
reason I couldn't find it on ANY of them when I
checked Nanci's available catalog. When I typed
in the name of the album, I found out why. All
of 'em have (had?, I hope) it listed as a new
release by "Nancy" Griffith. Grrr. I guess it
must be on sale this fall along with those long-
awaited new albums by "Kim Richie," "Mark Knoffler"
and "Jackson Brown."

I didn't think I've read about this here, but I just came
across a Tom Russel Band compilation CD from 2000
called 'All Around These Northern Town' which includes
a duet with Nanci on 'St. Olavs Gate'. The CD is subtitled
'The Norwegian Years' . According to the linear notes this
duet originally appeared on an album called 'The Long Way Around'.
Don't know the year.

What does 'rather fabulous' mean? It sounds like a putdown, whereas this is
a wonderful cd!
>>"Home" by the Dixie Chicks is superb.
This is unnecessary. We expect better of you, John Graveling. The Dixie
Chicks' first two cds were among the most exciting ever. It's obvious that
the next would be a masterpiece.
What else did your tour of America this summer produce? Come on!

My "rather fabulous" quote was meant as a compliment. I loved "What I
Deserve" and I was just trying to point out that "Easy", good as it is, is a
very different record to it's predecessor.
I will tell all about my three week sojourn across Tennessee, Virginia and
Kentucky when I have more time to gather my thoughts. But I did get to work
for a couple of days with my great friend and guitarist Pat Buchanan, who
was recording a CMT/Crossroads special with James Taylor and the Dixie
Chicks.
I have two big tours hitting the Uk in the next couple of months and the
mail outs are taking up inordinate amounts of time.

If you are referring to "Wide Open Spaces" and "Fly," that was actually
their fourth and fifth CDs.

My favorite song on there is "Mineral Wells," with Katy Moffatt, perhaps
because I'm a movie fanatic and am somewhat familiar with the town of
Mineral Wells. I just love the story that song tells.

My favorite, aside of course from the ones Nanci sings on, is track 8, "The
Angel of Lyon"...I think. "Veteran's Day" is also very good, and "Walkin'
on the Moon" is a nice romantic piece...come to think of it, the whole album
is great! Make it hard to decide...

From: "Steve Robertson" (stever@mindspring.com>
Most of the folks who have been on the NanciNet for a long time know about
Vince Bell. For any new list members, Nanci covered Vince's song "The Sun,
Moon and Stars" on LNGH, then covered "Woman of the Phoenix" on OVOR.
Since then, Lyle Lovett covered "I've Had Enough" on his tribute to Texas
songwriters "Step Inside This House," and Vince appeared on Austin City
Limits on the show based on Lyle's album and sang "Poetry, Texas."
Vince also came to Atlanta to sing for the NanciNet gathering back in the
Summer of 2000 and quickly won over everyone present.
For all of you who have never had the chance to hear Vince doing his own
songs, you can now hear all his songs from the latest album "Live in Texas"
on MP3.com. With a little luck, he will be adding songs from his earlier
albums "Phoenix" and "Texas Plates" in the near future. You'll find them
here:

Our sincerest thanks to Steve Robertson for creating and maintaining the mp3
site.
One small correction, there are two additional songs on Live In Texas, not
at the mp3.com site: a cover of Bruce Cockburn's Tokyo, and one of David
Rodriguez' Two Lane Blacktop. Guess you'll just have to buy the CD
(John, yours really IS coming).
