Subject: NN: Fairbanks Alaska Concert
   From: "James P Dixon" (jpdixon@usgs.gov>

On Friday the 13th Nanci made it to Fairbanks for a concert she tacked on to
the end of her self described 15 month tour. This was her first trip to
Alaska and she is now cruising the Inland Passage of Alaska for a well
deserved vacation.

The opening act was a local singer/songwriter Ann McBeth who was accompanied
by Alex Clarke. Ann has a new CD out (I did not catch the name) but
probably only available locally here in Fairbanks for now.

Nanci was in good spirits. She did confess about being still jet lagged
from he cross country trip. She even had a humorous story how she was
trapped in never-never land of customs. The flight she took after the
Letterman show was an Air China cargo flight that stopped in Anchorage for
her 12 Sept show there.

A set list is missing as my notes exist but currently missing. The music
ranged from There's a Light Beyond these Woods to Good Night New York. She
did sing Night Riders Lament (it appears it was written by an Alaskan) which
is not in her usual set and she apologized in advance if she forgot a word
or two. There was one point in the song where the verse did not come
immediately but she did remember after a little extra melody.

For the fashion watchers - Nanci wore black pants, a black blouse with
spaghetti straps and a pink colored sheer thing.

Hi everyone, I'm a long-time lurker, but I just had to say that Nanci & band
played great (on Letterman). Looking forward to "Winter Marquee"!

Thanks Shawn. I listened and have to admit, it made wonder whether I would
buy it. I already have so many recordings of all these tunes.

I can't imagine not buying Winter Marquee. With such a fresh version of "I
Wish It Would Rain", the song has new life. Then the new tracks alone are
worth it to me. "Last Train" home is just a kickin' song. I hope that the
heels kick up as "White Freight Liner" progresses as they did when I first
heard this tune live last year. I remember thinking, "Gosh, I hope this
song makes it on a CD somehow." That wish is coming true soon!!

Yes, there is a lot of material that, as Nanci fans, we have heard on
several releases. But I think this release captures the live Nanci Griffith
Experience in a way we can only hear by going back to One Fair Summer
Evening (or the few tracks from OFSE that made it to The MCA Years.)

Just a different perspective of why I know I will be at the CD shop on
Tuesday the 24th.

Maybe you had to be there! :)

I know I appreciated the concert enough that I really want to have the DVD,
even though I have most of those songs in various formats already. But there
are some nice extras. Emmylou being one of the nicest. Good Night New York
was pretty good. White Freight Liner was especially good. A recording with
James singing on Gulf Coast Highway is a big plus. And, my personal opinion
is that What's That I Hear is, in Nanci and the BMO's hands, a better call
to arms than If I Had A Hammer.

BTW, as far as the extra tracks on the DVD go: Lost Him In The Sun was one
of my favorites from Clock Without Hands and that live version was great at
the time - hope it has translated well to DVD. And the impression I had of
my first listen to Home On The Radio is that it is going to satisfy a lot of
long time Nanci fans. Clock Without Hands is a nice addition, though not
specifically worth buying the DVD for. On the other hand, I think she has
lightened up If I Had A Hammer to the point where it might be OK on a kiddie
record, but for an adult to listen to, the song has totally lost the impact
that it should have. Sort of like skipping during a funeral march. Not
really that extreme, but that's about the closest analogy I can come up
with.

The best thing about the DVD is that you will get to see Nanci as she
appeared that night. And that is going to bring a whole dimension to the
music that isn't present, either on the CD, or on the original versions of
these songs.

To my eyes and ears, it was a very good night.

Just visited www.nancigriffith.com. Isn't that picture of Nanci, apparently
the cover of Winter Marquee, really cool?

Best picture I've seen of her since the "demure Stratocaster player" picture
from the Flyer days.

I agree with Ken, the concert experience is what I am hoping is captured on
the CD and the DVD.

I have had the honor of seeing Nanci the week before Clock Without Hands
released in St. Petersburg, FL and then again this summer in Lenoir, NC (a
GREAT 24 hour road trip!). The live experience at both was very intimate,
with about 1,000 folks at each - SOLD OUT of course.

I wish I could have taken the time off of work to make the Nashville
recording for Winter Marquee. I know that each live recordings (Rockettown
Records - A Night in Rockettown and Michael W. Smith - Worship) that I have
been at in the past have been electric. Since Nanci's shows are always
special to me, I can only imagine to ecstasy of being there.

Looking forward to Winter in Florida!!!

Do we know for sure that the DVD will be audio AND video?

Amazon.com now has it available for pre-order and lists it as audio and
color video. Also, lots of cameras at the Knoxville show when it was
recorded. :-)

I can't imagine there being an audio only DVD along with a CD release. The
DVD has to be video. I just double checked CDNow and they list the DVD in
the video section.

Just a thought here, from a lurker - I've already pre-ordered thru cdnow, as
they have always gotten things to me on or sometimes even BEFORE the release
date. I've NOT had that good of luck with amazon at all... just a thought
if you all haven't ordered Winter Marquee yet, you might get it quicker if
you try cdnow. (No, I don't work for cdnow! ha!)...

Take care,

I also fell asleep before Nanci came on the Letterman show! I'm NOT that
old...just tired.

However, I haven't been suffering from a lack of good music lately: as many
have already pointed out, the Dixie Chicks' "Home" is wonderful. The
American public seems to agree, as the CD has knocked Mr. Mathers out of the
top spot. I am also waiting for the CD single by American Idol winner Kelly
Clarkson. Really. I ordered it. Love is a mystery.

In my much more usual cult-listenership, I've been enjoying Melissa
Ferrick's new "Listen Hard" CD. She truly is a phenomenal songwriter, in the
vein of someone who tells novels in the space of a song, with lines that
make you catch your breath with how striking they are. This one is a HAPPY
album, well mostly, as like many singer/songwriters, you totally know what's
going on in her life with each album, and she seems to be in a good
relationship.

I've also been listening to Toshi Reagon's "Toshi" and continue to marvel at
her amazing voice & chameleonlike ability to change genres and play each as
her own. There's a particularly beautiful cover of "Just What I Needed"
(yes, the Cars), and the Beatle fan in me felt like she was channeling John
Lennon with I Hate/I Love. Oh, and I got a lovely surprise in the mail
recently with Ojo de Tiburon by Michele Greene (what a coincidence, I
thought...there used to be an actress on LA Law named Michele Greene). Well,
it's the same one, and she's got actual chops as a singer/songwriter
performing in both English and Spanish. This was definitely NOT a vanity
project. And while I was very much impressed with Springsteen's "The Rising"
I just can't listen to it without crying, so I'm going to put it away for a
bit.

I made it through 9/11/02 all right, but I still wonder about the rest of
the days.

I'm looking forward to Ladyfest East, here in NYC in a couple of weeks,
where I can see Toshi R. live, along with Doria Roberts (Atlanta based
singer/songwriter), a reunion of the seminal no-wave/post punk group The
Bush Tetras, and the inspired satirist Julie Goldman aka Indigo Etheridge.
(One o'those lesbians the NY Times was recently SHOCKED to discover in the
folk music scene). I'm sure I'll discover some other wonderful surprises.
Support your Ladyfests folks! And they will end up supporting you...

I wish I didn't detest the poor functionality at www.nancigriffith.com so
much. It reduces my visits to the site to extremely infrequent - especially
so, given how much I love Nanci's music. And I do appreciate the artistry of
the site, so I would like to visit it more often just for the visuals. But
the poor functionality drives me nuts. It may be the worst site I've ever
visited. How the ()*%@#&^ do you escape from the full screen picture of
Nanci and Harlan? It's a GREAT picture, but I would really like to close it
now. The best I can do is get a pop-up "Copyright Nanci Griffith", but the
picture stays. ARRRGHHHH!

Anyway, enough ranting - you've all heard it before, anyway.

The reason I'm posting is to point out that there is an interesting letter
from Nanci to the VVAF on the "Current News" page that I don't remember
anyone mentioning here. If you're into that side of Nanci, it's well worth
checking out.

I agree Ken. You can't even navigate to previous spots during the same
session with forward or back commands. Instead you have to close individual
windows to go back and reaccess each page over again to move forward. The
pages look really nice but the logic of the site makes it a pain to
navigate.

   From: "Noah Samuels" (nesamuels@earthlink.net>

Hello Friends of Nanci,

My name is Noah and I just joined NanciNet. I'm excited to finally join as I
sincerely love the music of Nanci Griffith. I feel as if I've found a tribe.

About six years ago I was at a friend's house where I was living in
Asheville, NC. He was listening to NPR and they were doing a Nanci
retrospective. Her songs came onto the radio and I was enthralled and I went
out and bought "The Flyer." Since then I've been hooked. I have most of her
albums and all of her videos. I've seen her in concert 5 times.

When I see her onstage, I feel like she's a family member. Now that I know
most of her music, going to see her in concert can be a challenge because
she has about a million songs and half of them she has buried and left
behind.

I had the great joy of seeing Nanci play this summer at the Telluride
Bluegrass Festival. She did a wonderful show, but what was really exciting
was the morning of the show. Nanci, Emmylou, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Buddy
Miller sat together in this little, tiny park and played songs for this
little crowd of people. It was on behalf of the Landmine Free World
Campaign. They talked a little and then played songs individually. I was
about 5 feet away from where Nanci was sitting. She played "Clock Without
Hands". She then played a really beautiful song called something like "On
the Radio" about Harlan Howard.

It was so great to be so close to her and watching her play solo/acoustic. I
often wish that Nanci would do a solo tour and play small clubs and revisit
some of her older material. One can dream can't they?!

After this little acoustic gathering in the park, people walked up to her
and were talking and asking her to sign this & that. She was standing like
two feet away from me. There was a little break where she was kind of
standing by herself. I wanted so badly to go up to her, but I was no
nervous I couldn't manage to do it. I didn't want to bother her. Oh well!

So I look forward to being on the list. Btw, I have an odd question. Has
Nanci ever made a music video? Not her videos of concerts, but rather a
music video for a song?

Just curious.

The very first time I ever saw or heard of Nanci was in the early 90's when
I saw the video, yes actual video, for It's a Hard Life. I've never seen it
again since...

Also, during the credits for Other Voices, Other Room you see the video for
Speed of the Sound of Lonelines...you just have to put up with the credits
rolling over it...

Is anyone going through the "new Nanci purchase debate?" To order the DVD or
the CD of WINTER MARQUEE?? Finally, after seeing Nanci on Letterman last
week, I swallowed hard and ordered both...Must be completists, mustn't we?
By the way, I too get annoyed at the format at Letterman's show in which
musical guests are forced into the last five minutes of the show...with no
time to talk and no time for a second song. Clearly, Letterman's format has
become much too rigid...at least as regards where the musical act appears. I
can't stand and don't watch Leno, so I don't know if he too treats the
musical guests the same way. Ah, for the old days of Johnny Carson who'd
have singers on in the middle of the show, talk to them, and have them sing
a second song.

By the way, any Joan Osborne fans take note. Her new CD, HOW SWEET IT IS is
out on Tuesday. All R&B classics. The first sound clip on Amazon is of
"I'll Be Around" and is, surprisingly, the entire song. Anyway who can
resist her performance of this isn't quite breathing.

I am going through the same debate...and have decided to go ahead and
purchase both items....I was discussing this at work just yesterday and a
co-worker said that the smart decision would be to just buy the DVD...but I
said that unfortunately I was a completionist and would probably feel
obligated to buy both.

Maybe because I am such a fan of David Letterman, but I will have to come to
his defense and say that he has in the past talked to Nanci and others...but
yes, unfortunately those seem far and few between....now it seems mainly for
the "big name" acts like Janet Jackson or Bruce Springsteen. I can't really
say much about how he compares to Leno...I too can't stand him and will only
occasionally put up with his light hearted banter for a special guest that I
ant to see.

And you spoke of Joan Osbourne...I caught her on Conan O'Brien on September
11th I believe...I think she sat in the chair at the end but didn't
speak...so I think talk shows pretty much only want to hear them sing.
