"Is anyone going through the "new Nanci purchase debate?"
To order the DVD or the CD of WINTER MARQUEE?? Finally, after seeing Nanci
on Letterman last week, I swallowed hard and ordered both...Must be
completists, mustn't we?" Such a silly debate. You know that everybody on
this list is going to get both the DVD & the CD regardless. So why even
debate?
And for those of you that don't have a DVD player, you'll buy it anyway &
find a friend that does.
BTW, for San Franciscans. The Strictly Bluegrass festival is coming to
Golden Gate Park on October 5th & 6th. It's a free event featuring Emmylou
Harris, Steve Earle, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Peter Rowan, Hazel Dickens, and
others. it promises to be a fun time.
Signing off.

Nope - I fall into the minority here - I only ordered the cd. I don't have
a DVD player, so I see no reason to have something that I can't play. I've
been tempted to buy some vinyl too, but when you don't have a working record
player you just end up bothering someone else to copy it over to cassette or
cd for you - so I usually don't bother...

Griffsters,
I'm just back from my evening 4-mile walk, this one
with Winter Marquee in the discman while I traversed
my neighborhood and the nearby graveyard here in NW
Minneapolis. This is a very fine hour of Nanci and the
Blue Moon Orchestra. Yes, we've heard much of this
before, especially if we've been fortunate to see them
in concert lately, but it's great to have a live
"Flyer," "I Wish it Would Rain," and "I'm Not Drivin'
These Wheels" after all these years, and to hear the
lady sing "Mary Margaret" oh so many years later.
There's great new stuff, too; I hear "Good Night, New
York" and think of my grandmother's Ellis Island
arrival in 1933 to re-join my grandfather (and my
mother was born 9 months and 10 minutes later);
Nanci's new "Last Train Home" leading into her older
traveling song mentioned above; and fine versions of
Phil Ochs' "What's That I Hear" and Townes's "White
Freight Liner." And "Traveling Through this Part of
You" sent a shiver up my spine -- that extra jolt of
live energy takes the song to another level.
Anyway, I hope you'll all enjoy it, too.
Thanks to Bill Lavery at Village Records
(www.villagerecords.com) for service that got the
stuff here the day before release, and without
amazonian shipping charges.
I haven't watched the DVD yet, but expect to be very
satisfied.

Just found the "Winter Marquee" DVD on my doormat from Village records, I
think that is rather quick to the Netherlands. It is playing now in my

Subject: NN: True Nanci Nut
From: Catelaw@aol.com
Date: Tue, 24 Sep 2002 20:21:15 -0400
Yesterday was my birthday, most of which I spent at the doctor's office. In
haste to rearrange my handbag so as not to be yelled at by anyone, I
neglected to bring my checkbook. Thus, I almost had to give them my
mother-in-law's birthday $$ to me to cover my copay. Since they really
didn't want to appear THAT hard-hearted (it was my birthday after all), they
told me I could go home & get it afterwards and finally, after much
negotiation, put a check in the mail.
Having been released from the doc, I wandered over to Borders KNOWING that
Winter Marquee was on the premises, and thinking, or trying to, of how I
could talk them into letting me have it six hours early.
No such luck. I went through three clerks, the brightest of which finally
went and got the asst manager. We sparred a bit until she spoke the fatal
phrase, "I couldn't overrule this, even if I wanted to." I followed with,
"So that makes you really not the real boss, right?" Soon, the associate
manager appeared and started trying to tell me about Contracts 101, from
which I begged off. Finally, they got their general manager, and by the
time she got to where I was waiting, I had gotten down quite painfully from
my standing position supported by crutches (don't ask) to a kneeling
position in the floor. Still, from bottom to top, the company line: "Can't
do...Will get fined." I even managed to cry for the Supreme Court (general
mgr), to which she remained unmoved. I even told them Nanci would WANT me to
have it for my birthday, s'long as I paid for it!
Bill Lavery, Sarah, Shawn, Reid, Kenn, Pete Oppenheimer, PLEASE explain this
to me. A contract in the hand is one thing, but money in the fist is
something else, especially considering that I read and heard that other
large vendors let theirs go early.

Gosh, Cate, so sorry for your problems. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I understand a
lot of *incredible* people have birthdays this week! (Any bets on who's
older?)
Bill Lavery is the expert here, but my understanding is that the record
store could lose whatever arrangements they might have with the record label
if they sell before the street date. I sincerely doubt that Rounder would
stop wholesaling to Borders, but they may have a fine built into the
contract. They'd know too because all CD scans are tracked carefully by an
independent company (Soundscan) and reported to the labels. That said, I've
found most Borders stores to be AMAZINGLY disorganized, so I think your were
justified in t(c)rying.

Got both the CD and DVD yesterday. I thought the DVD was very good. In the
CD was an insert regarding other Nanci albums available on Rounder, and it
had the three albums that were remastered and released earlier this year.
The insert also listed "Last of The True Believers". Does anyone know if
that album has also been remastered?

Jack,
LOTTB has been remastered but not by Rounder. A 24/96 DAD (Digital Audio
Disc) playable on DVD players was released this past year. The disc put out
by Classic Records under their "master tape sound" logo. Their web site is
www.classicrecs.com This is sort of equivalent to the half speed master
and audiophile vinyl pressings that were popular with collectors during the
vinyl era. If you have a DVD player the audio on this disc is excellent.

My little story to add to this: last year a cd came out from my favorite
band (any Concrete Blonde fans here??? LOL) that had regrouped after 8
years. Needless to say I was anxiously awaiting it. I knew the "street
date" and went on my lunch hour that very day. We have a pretty big
regional independent record store located here in Columbia and that is where
I get most of my stuff...well I get there and the guy tells me that they
have sold out. He then proceeds to tell me that they had put them out a
WEEK ago! I ended up finding it later that day but not after much phoning
and running around...so the moral of this story is that it doesn't hurt to
try...and maybe the independent stores are more loose on the rules...of
course Nanci will sell tons more than Concrete Blonde will...but I thought
that the rules of the street date still applied.

Not me. This isn't looking too promising. A quick lunchtime trawl of the
record shops of central Edinburgh turned up even worse results than the
Canadian experience (i.e. 0 CDs 0 DVDs). The CD is out, apparently but
no-one seems to have heard of the DVD. It is also not listed on
amazon.co.uk, as far as I can see. I haven't even seen a review of Winter
Marquee in any UK publication.
Are Rounder Records up to this? It seems that Nanci may have slipped into a
whole new era as far as distribution and promotion outside of the US are
concerned : - (

Dear All,
I have sat quietly on the list for sometime now, never brave enough to
write. However, I picked up my new copy of Winter Marquee at my local HMV,
here in England, rushed home, put it into my computer so that I could listen
while I work! It wont play, and keeps skipping tracks. This also happened
with 'From a distance the very best of'.
I know there are some technically minded Nanci fans out there, do you have
any advice?
(the cd drive is 4 yrs old and it plays on my little Hi Fi)
I would like to say I think the list is great. I have been going to see
Nanci since 1992 and every time since. I am almost a completist in nature,
stopped only by what is available in the UK - would love to have the videos,
but would I be right in thinking they aren't compatible with the UK system?

the group that "comes from the land down under...vegamite sandwich...etc"

I've not had the skipping problem that others have mentioned. However, I
have a newer machine with a lot of memory and a fast processor. "Winter
Marquee" also plays in my car CD player. I will hesitantly suggest that
perhaps the CD is engineered to play on newer hardware and may demand too
much of older machines. Just a somewhat educated guess.

I've had the problem too. The car would only play on the 4th attempt, the
DVD/CD not at all, and the CD player had the skipping problem. I suspect
there is some sort of protection on it, not sure.
However just prior to returning the CD to the store, I copied the tracks
(not CD copy) via my CD writer onto a blank CD and the re-written CD works
fine and I can listen to that in any CD player. Not sure how legit that is
but it does mean I can listen to it, and the original sits in the cupboard.
Obviously there is a problem that the manufacturer needs to look at.

Thank you, Paul,
I have now learnt a trick with my new cd writer, having managed to write the
original cd to my computer and then copy it. Apart from a slight glitch at
the start of the speed of the sound of loneliness, on the newly recorded cd
, but not on the computer files, the recording sounds great. So now I can
continue to work and enjoy.
I am so pleased, and I have to say I really like the album. I think Nanci
live is just something else, her voice is so much richer and it brings back
the amazing feeling of being there - nothing else gives me such a sense of
exhilaration.
Thank you once again

A very good source of music in the UK is Country Music Store. They were
recommended to me a couple of years ago by another NanciNetter.

I have no affiliation with them, but they usually get US releases the same
day, orders normally arrive the following day and their prices are very keen
especially if you get in with an "Early Bird Saver". They are not a club
like Britannia or whatever so you won't get trapped into ordering 30 CDs you
don't like, they will send you catalogue and a newsletter with new releases
and offers on every so often.

Hey folks,
Last night Dawn-Marie and I decided to go ahead and get the new CD and DVD.
So we dropped by our local Barnes & Noble, where I found the CD right away.
I couldn't find the DVD, however, so I asked the young man in the store (who
had been ignoring me for several minutes) to see if he could find it for me.
After several minutes of seemingly fruitless computer searching, he told me
that it didn't exist. I semi-politely told him that yes, it did. So he went
back to the computer, started this time with the DVD _title_, and said, "Oh,
there it is! They spelled her first name differently in the DVD listing."
I just checked B&N on line, and sure enough, they have it listed as NancY
Griffith!

From: "Shawn Kimbro" (shawn@mountainsoul.net>
Hi Folks --
John's CD recommendations of last week remind me that
I wanted to mention a few touring artists who are
perhaps a bit more obscure than John's, but only
temporarily. First off, you may remember my
recommendation last year of The Reel-time Travelers.
At that time I suggested they might be the heirs
apparent to the vacated Freight Hoppers position at
the top of the Old-Time music haystack. I'm happy to
report that they have ascended that throne.
Lead vocalist for the Travelers Martha Scanlan is a
superb songwriter. But you don't have to take my word
for it -- take Gillian Welch's or Kate Campbell's as
they judged Martha tops in two categories at the Chris
Austin songwriting contest at Merlefest this year.
She won for "Little Bird of Heaven," and placed highly
with "Hallelujah." Both songs are receiving
respectable Americana airplay, but should be getting
more. Check out their latest CD called "Livin'
Old-time, Thinkin' Reel-time." It's superb. We get to
hook-up with the Reel-time Travelers at a festival in
Virginia in a couple of weeks and we can't wait!
Anyone hearing them?
Another East Tennessee group is hitting the road this
week. They are Robinella and the CC String Band.
Their style is folky acoustic blues with heavy jazz
influences. They've been a Knoxville favorite for a
couple of years and the world is about to find out
about them as they are beginning a fall tour with
Willie Nelson. Their latest CD, called "No Saint, No
Prize," is one of my favorite releases this year. It
contains an exciting version of Nanci Griffith's "Love
at the Five and Dime." You haven't heard it like
this! Also, look for them on the Oct. 14 Woodsongs Radio Hour.
And just in case there is anyone here who follows the
Contra Dance circuit. (Proof that there is no better
combination in the world than dramamine and colorful
skirts.) Keep an eye out for The New Atomic City
String Band now on tour. They'll be in dance halls in
Ohio, New York, the Carolinas, and cities in the
Southeast this fall. Say hello to the bass player and
tell him to send money home to dad!
All my best,
-Shawn

John:
There's a nice article on Elizabeth Cook in the new NO DEPRESSION.
Unfortunately, I found her new cd, HEY Y'ALL, a bit disappointing. Five of
the songs on the new disk were on her previous, privately-released disk,
ELIZABETH COOK. That was one of my favorites of the year when it came out.
None of the five songs she re-does on the new disk are improved
performances. In fact, several were much better on her freshman effort.
There is only one real stunner on the new cd, YOU MOVE TOO FAST, which
captures the feel of several of the songs on the first record: slow and
beautiful. Unfortunately, she didn't choose to re-do any of the slow and
beautiful ones. Overall, then, a strange sophomore album.

Hi - maybe I should say 'hey ya'll'... 8-)
I have not heard the privately released material of EC, and I don't know if
you can buy it anywhere. I like her new cd - BUT...Warner Brothers is
'missing the boat', with picking singles for radio. "Stupid Things" is
definitely NOT a good choice, especially for the very first single shipped
out! The best thing about the offer that is on her website, (and you can buy
thru tower records, with this special offer), is a cd that contains 3 LIVE
performances from the Grand Ole Opry. She does a great song, called "If I
Could", which SHOULD have been on the 'real cd', not the extra limited
edition live cd, and should have been the single to radio. The extra cd, is
nice - it features "Crazy Arms", (remake, made famous by Ray Price), "I'm
Not Lisa", (remake, made famous by Jessi Coulter), and the 3rd selection "If
I Could", which I think 'shoulda' been the one that went to radio...
See ya
Beth
