Not sure, from the three tracks I've heard
so far, but I have a feeling that Mindy Smith
has a long career ahead of her.

I read that her debut album is not out until
January but I'm already really taken by her voice.

My ears first pricked up when I heard her
version of 'Jolene' on the Dolly Parton tribute
album, so I found her website - and three songs -
at http://www.mindysmith.net/photosmusic.asp
Think Nanci fans will like her song 'Falling'
but she really takes my breath with 'Come to Jesus'.

From her stage set up, detailed on her website,
looks like she normally plays acoustic with just
a mandolin player - which is probably how I would
prefer to hear her live. Anyone here seen her?

Very best

I would say this is almost worth buying a DVD recorder for.
BBC4 is under quite a lot of pressure in the UK because it hasn't got
many viewers but I think this is exactly what it's for, minority
programming.

So, UK readers go out and get it and support public broadcasting!

(Quite apart from the fact that its got Curb Your Enthusiasm on which
makes it worth getting a licence for)

All the best

Is there any kind friend out there in the madness who could video some or
all of the Friday and Saturday BBC4 programmes for me? I'm living with my
mother at present and, although she has BBC4, the video has packed up and I
don't like to ask her to forego her usual diets of soaps and pop quizzes for
me (it is *her* home and television, after all!)

I'm specially interested in the Emmylou Harris programme on Friday
21.00-22.00 and the following four programmes on Saturday/Sunday:

Nanci Griffiths 21.00

Alison Krauss and Union Station Live 22.00

Emmylou Harris - From A Deeper Well 23.50

Emmylou Harris - Old Grey Whistle Test 00.50

If anyone could do even some of these, I would be so grateful. Naturally,
all expenses, including time and trouble, will be met in full.

Gratefully,
Maureen Parr
(formerly from London, now living in Bournemouth, England)

Me too! I live in the states, so I can't see them at all(even if BBC
America is running them, I don't have cable)! 8-(

Let me know what it'll cost and I'll get you a check.
Thanks!

Subject: NN: A summing up...

We've reached the waning days of the year, bu I refuse to believe we've reached
the waning days of this lovely list. In fact, recent topics like the records
that have had long lives on our own playlists and the "next" Nanci have me as
interested as I've been in awhile. I haven't seen Nanci live in awhile, but I
treasure some of those shows as my favorites (one of the most fun was the
Sessions at 54 filming, at which I met the lovely & talented Ferg-man).

I haven't traveled as much to see musicians I love in the last three years
because there's someone at home waiting for me, and when we go on the road,
it's together. It's as simple as that. I don't travel as much to seek things of
beauty because I've found someone very special. So there's that...

...though it was only this year that said Someone Special finally "got" Miss
Nanci. "That Winter Marquee's a pretty good album," she said. "For some reason,
I don't mind her voice on that one..." (As we all well know, there are those
who have a "little girl voice" phobia. In fact, I'm one of them, except for
NG). So we take turns stealing Winter Marquee from each other to take to work.
I may just break down and buy another copy so we can both have one.

Rather than a "new" Nanci, I've acquired a few other special musicians who give
me that kind of pleasure in the last three years or so. One is Melissa Ferrick,
who does put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen. The other is the
still unknown (but not for long, I hope,) Meghan Cary.

(Shameless self promo: here's a link to a recent interview I did with Melissa
Ferrick. http://www.gaycitynews.com/gcn_249/theintimacyofsolo.html)

I found I bought hardly any new music this year, but went back to some albums
from '02 (which in many ways was a frozen blur, as it was for a lot of us in
NYC). Springsteen's The Rising was something I could finally listen to. The
Chicks' Home was the exception to the new rule that talented mature artists are
no longer on major labels. And of late, as I mentioned recently, I've been
loving the Dolly Parton tribute CD.

I wish everyone a happy, loving, healing and active holiday season.

Kathleen W.
