NanciNet Digest 4-1-03
// Folks, the unmoderated list has been awash with postings
// that had no relevance to Nanci at all...mostly about some
// of the pro-war activities of a radio network. I have not included
// them in this digest. While I am still trying not to censor the
// basic list, I have decided to limit the noise in the digest.
// If you have a desire to read the other posts, please send a
// note to me directly (bpage3@yahoo.com) and I'll forward them

I haven't posted here in so long I forgot how!
I'm so excited to see a date in Albuquerque,
a fundraiser at the zoo! It's a great venue,
outdoors, with a duck pond and a nice
amphitheatre.
It's been years since she has played here.
Yay!

Subject: NN: New Music
I just had to put this musical suggestion out there, because I know my
fellow Nanci lovers are also connoisseurs of good music.
I recently picked up the new The Minus 5 disc- Down with Wilco: A Tragedy in
Three Halfs.
The band is composed of Scott McCaughey, Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Leroy
Bach, Peter Buck and Ken Stringfellow with help from Christy McWilson and
others.
Let me just add it is a joy to experience from track one to track 13. At
times experimental, at times melancholy, always melodic and always
interesting, it brings to mind Radiohead, R.E.M., Wilco and the Beatles with
some Beach Boys thrown in.
I haven't stopped listening to it since I bought it, and that my friends! is
saying something! I now only wished I had managed to get out to the show
when the Minus 5 came through town a few months back...

Musicians United: Steve Earle is currently touring the U.K. The stage and
drum kit are draped in "No War in Iraq" banners. This has been met with
mixed reaction, some supportive, some against. He said he nearly started a
riot in Norway with his political message as opinion is so clearly divided.
He claims it's his right to have freedom of speech and he does not mind if
people object, so he does see the whole picture, but is going to ram his
side down your throat all night.

Thanks for the recommendation! I saw this in the store today, but didn't
buy it. I'll put it on my list for next time.
I just bought Rosanne Cash's new album Rules of Travel and it's terrific.
Also, if you like Be Good Tanyas (and if you haven't heard them, they're
"our" kind of music), their new album Chinatown is definitely worth checking
out.
And I wonder where all my spare change goes...

>>Emmylou's voice was featured in an Air Force recruiting ad a couple of
years ago, so she must have had a thought that she might be risking paying
gigs from the "military-musical complex."((
I think Emmylou's father was an Air Force man and I think she did the ad to
honor him rather than from any thought of "risking gigs." I've said it
before and I'll say it again, we can be against this particular war and the
reasons we're fighting, and still support the men and women risking their
lives. While I don't believe at all we should be fighting in Iraq right
now, I do hope everyone over there comes back alive and whole.

Let me add my voice to the chorus recommending Rosanne Cash's new CD "Rules
of Travel". It's really very good. I especially like "Rules of Travel"
and "Closer Than I Appear." She sings a "duet" with her father, Johnny
Cash, which is heartfelt and moving... his voice is like a mountain.
Rosanne is touring with a stop in Alexandria, VA at the Birchmere on April
15th.

Great news on an FYI. I went into the local Best Buy and they had the One
Fair Summer Evening CD on the rack! I had not been able to find it for two
years since I gave away my last copy.
I have a big smile on my face.

Dear Netters,
I opened my Tallahassee Democrat this April Fools' morn; and, wow!
there's Walter Tunis' article: "Break Turns Busy for Folk Queen". I don't
recall if a link to this fabulous piece has recently appeared in the
Nancinet; hopefully, a savvy 'Netter will "make it so". There's one gaffe:
"Winter Marquee" is NOT "Griffith's first concert recording since 1988".
There IS the reference to the April 30th appearance on Letterman w/ Tom
Russell (and I'll be awake, since Kathryn & I are going to see Widespread
Panic that night!).
I hope the war ends today ! I just read (re-read?) the Gandhi quote
that "an eye for an eye makes both blind". Now, back to lurkdom.... Steve
Johnson
