Subject: NN: Wildflower Festival
From: "Ron Hennessy" (ronhennessy@msn.com>
Date: Thu, 8 May 2003 17:51:28 -0500
Here's a late announcement for those of you in the Dallas TX area: the
annual Wildflower Festival is in progress from now until next Sunday.
More
info here:
www.wildflowerfestival.com/
Chuck Pyle, a favorite C&W singer/songwriter of mine, will be performing
each night.
I wish I could go myself, but I'm broke until next week.
My recent DVD acquisitions: Wagner's "Lohengrin," with Domingo, Claudio
Abbado, and Vienna State Opera (great vocal and orchestral performances
and
sound; video a little disappointing); and 2 seasons of "Absolutely
Fabulous," a slightly raunchy but brilliant BBC comedy series, written
by
and starring Jennifer Saunders.
I haven't been listening to much non-classical music lately. On the
drive
between home and work, I mostly listen to our local classical station.
I've
discovered a terrific a capella group called Chanticleer, and bought 5
of
their CDs. They sing a variety of styles, from Gregorian chant to modern
jazz, but concentrate on Renaissance music. Perfect ensemble singing.
(I hope all this is sufficiently on topic!)
Best wishes,
Ron Hennessy

Ooh, ooh! Me too! I saw them at Ladyfest East and they blew me away with
their intelligence, musicianship and sense of fun. HIGHLY recommended.

Late again, but I'm going through my AOL mail for the first time in
about a
week...
I wanted to add that we saw Cris Williamson a few weeks ago at The
Turning
Point in Piermont (NY), and she goes back & forth between Martin &
Steinway
with great ease.
She puts on a GREAT show, btw.
(Oh, and shameless plug, I have an interview with Cris in the current
ROCKRGRL magazine)...

I realize there has probably been a lot of discussion about this
previously
but if you could please enlighten me I would be most appreciative.
Where can I get Texas Blue Bonnet plants of seeds?
Are Texas Blue Bonnets an annual or perennial?
Thank you.

This probably doesn't help you much, but I have a packet- of course I
bought
them in Austin- maybe someone on the list that lives there can stop at
the
mall and pick some up for you. ;-) Actually, I may have gotten them at
the
gift shop in the Capitol, come to think of it. I believe they are
annual.
Mine are usually on display on my wall, but packed away right now, or
else
I'd check. ;-)

There's a generous gardener on-line who mails these seeds out--I've
never
actually asked for any:

An online store that carries them is:

(All I did was a goggle search under "Texas blue bonnet seeds".

Subject: NN: Rain Rain Go Away?
From: "Steffel, Kenneth A." (hickorywind@inos.com>
Date: Wed, 7 May 2003 00:51:28 -0400
No Not Really. Don't Go Away, as to posting about them.
Just trying to be clever in this post's title
About 83 songs posted so far, a couple of repeats but repeats only
counted
once. Including about 15 that I thought of. Some of course that were
mentioned by others.
I was just leafing through a book, and found this.
Short and Sweet
APRIL RAIN SONG: Langston Hughes
Let the rain kiss you.
let the rain beat upon your head with silver
liquid drops.
Let the rain sing you a lullaby.
The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk.
The rain makes running pools in the gutter
The rain plays a little sleep-song on our roof
at night.
And I love the rain.

I've just killed a spider, It will Rain.
Olde Folk superstition.
Which is odd for me to do, as I like spiders and usually capture then
and
take them outside, for relocation and release.
Sorry, this is sounding like some blog.
As to a list of these titles when it is done, or over. I'll be happy to
push
it on it's way if anyone is interested. On the other hand most of you
have
seen them letter by letter on the NN.
I'm certain I've already posted this url;
Rain Songs WebPage http://www.lacarte.org/songs/rain/
(this copied and pasted from the google search Songs About Rain with
Links
to Lyrics, a virtual ...only to cover those songs which are likely to be
known by wide audiences, and are significantly involved with rain,
whether
the word is in their title or not.
Andrew Werling sent out this search parameter
I did a search on CDNow's Song Title Option (http://www.cdnow.com/
click on
Music, then on the drop down box ,select song title...I use it all the
time
as a reference.)
I typed in Rain as a key word.
Total results = 17,498. Granted, there would be duplicates...the
number is
based on albums on which the word appears in a song title. More than
one
song has it in the title, the album gets listed twice.
And then this url (copied and pasted from the google search)
SoundBlaster.com - Creative MediaSource
The "Find" feature will retrieve all songs based upon keywords that you
textbox and any song that contains the word `rain' in its title, artist,
genre ...

Subject: NN: No NC or place to hide for spiderkillers
From: ConorMG@aol.com

I've just been reminded of a menacing children's rhyme which is usually
chanted or half-sung, accompanied by suitable finger and tickling
gestures.
May it produce armies of spiders marching through their nightmares for
any
foul habitual spiderkillers masquerading as music-lovers:
Incy-wincy spider
Climbing up the spout...
Down came the rain
And washed the spider out!
Out came the sunshine
And dried up all the rain....
Incy-wincy spider
Climbs the spout again...!
I'm currently listening to Steeleye Span singing this medieval song or
poem,
one of the great rain poems to put up there with Hardy's, Edward
Thomas's
and
T S Eliot's:
O western wind, when wilt thou blow
That the small rain down may rain?
Christ, that my love were in my arms,
And I in my bed again!

On rain.
Lady in the Rain
When I was out walkin' in the rain
Heart full of trouble and doubt
Met a lady in my mind
Talked till the night ran out
Lady in the rain
Lady of the song
Her melody lingers a long time after
Her sweet smiling laughter
And the rain and the pain have gone
We talk of loves we've each once known
And share the sorrows our lives have grown
Her laugh runs like water in the sun
But slow and deep when the memories come
Lady in the rain
Lady of the song
........
Quiet now, the end of a troubled night
Sun's comin' up to bring the light
But I miss my lady in the rain
My companion of the night
Lady in the rain
Lady of the song
........
Still go out walkin' in the rain
Searchin' the rain soaked streets for sun
Her soft song echoes on and on
Till in my mind the hurt is done
Lady in the rain
Lady of the song
Her melody lingers a long time after
Her sweet smiling laughter
And the rain and the pain have gone

Well, I'm a little late to this, but I'll throw in the Carpenters'
"Rainy
Days & Mondays," as well as CCR's "Have You Ever Seen the Rain,"
(covered
beautifully, I might add, by Joan Jett on The Hit List).
And speaking of disco, remember the Barbra Streisand/Donna Summer hit,
"Enough is Enough"? It's raining, it's pouring/my love life is boring
me to
tears/after all these years...

Listen to Dr. Nina Simone's version, and you will rain.
As do Nanci and Elvis, Simone moves me to tears every time I listen to
her, which is often.
