Subject: NN: From Boston to Southshore

From: "David E. Mahaffey" (musemaker@oddpost.com>
Hello all,
Pardon the fairly off-topic post, but I need assistance. I've just been
accepted to Emerson College's graduate program in Publishing & Writing,
and
will be moving to Boston in August or September (just in time for the
Boston
Folk Festival). Trouble is, I'm now living in North Carolina and can't
get
up to New England in advance of the move, so I'm having no luck finding
a
place to rent. If any member of this wonderful community knows the
area, or
has a garage apartment opening up, or knows people who knows people, or
is
otherwise inclined to help, I would appreciate any leads.
Please e-mail me DIRECTLY, musemaker@oddpost.com.
Just saw Eric Taylor play two sets Saturday at Eddie's Attic. Word is
he has
a live CD coming June 24 called The Kerrville Tapes which, appropriately
enough, is comprised of his Kerrville Fest performances over the years.
They're trying to get some in time for Kerrville this year. Details will
soon be available at his website www.bluerubymusic.com
Song list (in order):
Sweet Sunny South
Texas, Texas
Where I Lead Me
Prison Movie
Walkin' Back Home
Louis Armstrong's Broken Heart
Hemingway's Shotgun
Two Fires
Birdland
Strong Enough for Two
Oh, and speaking of Boston, Eric is part of Boston Folk Festival this
year,
a solo set and a Texas Song Theater show.
Anyway, thanks a bunch.

Subject: NN: Last night I dreamt of Nanci - Writing
From: "Caroline Grew" (c.k.grew@btopenworld.com>

My dream
Bill's point that things are slow again has kicked me into telling y'all
about my dream. This is the first time I recall dreaming about our
angel
and so I was very excited about it.
The dream was very convoluted, as they always are, but the interesting
part
was that I was in a hotel and saw Nanci about to head up the stairs. I
rushed over and said that I really wanted to speak to her. She
graciously
replied that I could call her in an hour's time and we could talk on the
phone.
Then I spent an anxious hour clock watching. As the time got nearer and
nearer my anxiety increased. I rushed off to my hotel room to ask the
hotel
desk to connect me to Nanci. The next thing I am in a canal boat with
loads
of other people. My panic is immense but then there she is in the canal
boat. I say "Hello" and then I woke up!!
Boy, was I fed up about that!
Writing
I saw from the official website that Nanci is writing again. I had
started
to read the book she had started a while back, but lost the information
when
my old computer died. Does anyone know where I can download the stuff
again?

were
there any?
James, hoping Mr. Cash is not too sad.

For lovers of Robert Burns or Eddi Reader, smile! Eddi just came out
with
EDDI READER SINGS THE SONGS OF ROBERT BURNS on Rough Trade in the UK.
It
sounds esoteric but is completely accessible and gorgeous. Great
singing,
great players (Ian Carr, Phil Cunningham, Boo Hewerdine, John McCusker,
etc.), the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the poems/songs of
Robert
Burns. I'm sure a Nanci fan from the UK will back me up as to how
special and lovely this cd is...

I've not heard it yet, but Eddie Reader's Burns record sounds
wonderful. I
saw her last Summer at a festival and thought her thrilling, supported
as
she was by the excellent singer-songwriter Boo Hewerdine. Burns has
elicited brilliant interpretations from Dougie MacLean, Dick Gaughan
and
many others, so this combination looks very exciting.
Mind you, I'm high after seeing Eliza Gilkyson at Chichester last night
in
one of my best concerts ever. What a great singer, writer and
performer!
She's up there now for me in the stellar sphere along with Alisons
Krauss
and Moorer, Gretchen, Kim and Nanci. And I'm in the seventh heaven.

To the other folks out in the golden lights of the great American west,
my
son Daniel is also out there somewhere. Last I heard he was in Aspen &
Grand Junction, CO, then on out to the California. He's currently
touring
with the Grasshoppers. They're on the national festival circuit so
they'll
be all over the country this summer. My buddy Sonny Smith who some of
you
know from Mountain Soul will join them in a couple of weeks when he
finishes
a few little gigs with me. Watch this band.
Also, watch for Robinella and the CC String Band. I introduced them to
the
NanciNet a couple of years ago. They're just releasing a new CD on
Columbia
Legacy (which is SUPERB) and starting a national tour which includes
some
openers for, guess who, *Nanci Griffith*. Daniel will also join them
for
selected dates. The kid is living the life I always wanted when I was
his
age.
All my best,
-Shawn

For those Brian Wilson fanatics out there (and I know there are a few of
you)...It was announced last week that Brian Wilson and his current
touring
band (including the awesome Wondermints)are taking the legendary lost
album
"Smile" out on the road next year.
Holy shit.
The shows are mainly in England, which rules me out, but HOT DAMN!
Brian
Wilson taking Smile out on the road!
Bob Hope just turned 100.
It looks like it's the end of the world. However, I'm quite content.
Hopefully the long overdue Smile Box Set will come out in the near
future,
and life will be a little better.

can anyone recommend a compilation of traditionals/spirituals by folk
singers? something along the lines of "o brother", with more spirituals
(i.e. amazing grace, swing lo, etc)??
thanks for any leads....

Nearest thing I can think of is Kate Campbell's "Wandering Strange", a
mix
of old hymns and a few of her originals.

I have been living with Gillian's new disc, "Soul Journey" for a few
days
now. It differs from her earlier work in that there is a different
ambience.
We get drums, swirls of organ and a lighter timbre to her vocals. Some
tracks are still stark and solo, "One Little Song" asks if there is one
more
song that ain't been sung? "Wayside/Back In Time" and "Lowlands" are
stand-outs at this stage, "I Made A Lovers Prayer" will appeal to those
who
enjoyed her early work. The finale, "Wrecking Ball", would not be out of
place on a Neil Young record.
Shawn may be disappointed at the lack of murder ballads!!!

In this slow time, let me offer two new artists/cds for you to give an
ear
to:
Lizzie West- Holy Road
and
Gemma Hayes- Night on My Side
I think Nanci fans will like both of them. Lizzie has one of those
voices
you just can't get rid of- it's infectious and she has great songwriting
talents. The title track alone is worth the price.
Gemma is another find- lovely voice and good songs. I haven't listened
to
this one as much, but it is slowly growing on me by the hour. ;-)
The other cd I bought was The Clash retrospective, but I'm sure no one
needs
explanation of that one. lol

Hello John,
Is "Wrecking Ball" Beth Nielsen Chapman's harsh "Heads Up For the
Wrecking
Ball" from her classic album "Sand and Water"?
Thanks,
