MCA Records Issues Complete Studio Recordings on Double CD
MCA RECORDS PRESS RELEASE
Two-CD Nanci Griffith Retrospective THE COMPLETE MCA STUDIO RECORDINGS
Includes Anti-War Anthem 'Stand Your Ground,' Previously Unreleased in
the U.S.
"Stand Your Ground," an impassioned anti-war statement Nanci Griffith
recorded a dozen years ago, finally makes its U.S. debut on her two-CD
retrospective NANCI GRIFFITH: THE COMPLETE MCA STUDIO RECORDINGS (MCA
Nashville/UME), released June 24, 2003. Encompassing 46 selections,
each 96k/24-bit mastered from the original masters, THE COMPLETE MCA STUDIO
RECORDINGS includes every track from her four acclaimed studio albums
of the late '80s/early '90s plus the rarity "Wooden Heart" (Elvis Presley's
1960 hit) and the never-released-in-the-U.S. "Tumble And Fall" and "Stand
Your Ground," each from Gulf War-era sessions for 1991's LATE NIGHT GRANDE
HOTEL.
After four indie releases, Griffith made her major label debut with LONE
STAR STATE OF MIND (1987), premiering the Julie Gold-penned "From A
Distance" (later a major hit for Bette Midler) and her first country
Top 40, the title track. Her "From A Distance" hit #1 U.K. and Ireland, lending
her superstar status there. Along with Robert Earl Keen Jr.'s "Sing One For
Sister," Paul Kennerly's "Let It Shine On Me" and Mac McAnally's "Nickel
Dreams," favorites included her own "Trouble In The Fields," "There's A
Light Beyond These Woods (Mary Margaret)," "Beacon Street" and "Ford
Econoline."
LITTLE LOVE AFFAIRS (1988) scored another country Top 40 in "I Knew
Love"; "Outbound Plane" (a hit for Suzy Bogguss); Keen's "I Would Change My
Life," and a McAnally duet, "Gulf Coast Highway." The title track was joined by
numbers such as "Love Wore A Halo (Back Before The War)," "Anyone Can Be
Somebody's Fool," Harlan Howard's "Never Mind" and John Stewart's "Sweet
Dreams Will Come" (with Stewart on guitar and vocal).
STORMS (1989) had Phil Everly add his trademark harmonies to "You Made
This Love A Teardrop." Griffith's "I Don't Want To Talk About Love," Phil
Ochs tribute "Radio Fragile," "It's A Hard Life Wherever You Go," "Drive-In
Movies And Dashboard Lights" and "Listen To The Radio" (later a Kathy
Mattea hit) were among its line-up. "Wooden Heart" appeared on a U.S. promo
disc and the U.K. compilation THE LAST TEMPTATION OF ELVIS.
LATE NIGHT GRANDE HOTEL stirred up controversy for its pop sound. But
"It's Just Another Morning Here" (again with an Everly vocal), the title song,
"Fields Of Summer," "The Power Lines," "Down 'N' Outer," and "One Blade
Shy Of A Sharp Edge" rank with Griffith's most evocative works, alongside
Vince Bell's "The Sun, Moon And Stars," Gold's "Heaven" and Tom Waits' "San
Diego Serenade."
On other labels since then, Griffith has remained one of music's most
respected artists. In early 2003, she debuted at the Grand Ole Opry,
another step in a career marked by a beautiful voice, brilliant songwriting and
emotional commitment.

Subject: NN: While I'm lurking....

From: "nancy" (nhight@gloryroad.net>
Hello again everyone.
As I stated recently I've been away from the Nanci Net for awhile and
only here for a short while longer. So, while I'm lurking, I hope it is not
in bad form to find out if there is anyone who has any recorded television
appearances of Nanci that they would be willing to make copies of or
knows of a good source. I have a few VHS tapes which have some great
performances from various television shows. Awhile back (about 4 years ago) a Mr.
Edward Gorkey from the Nanci Net made a couple for me.
If anyone is willing to do that I would greatly appreciate it. One show
that comes to mind that I have never seen is her appearance on Politically
Incorrect. Any Austin City Limits shows, Texas Connection, New Country,
American Music Shop, etc...or any other obscure music shows like that
would be great. I don't have DVD yet, but if anyone has compilations or other
stuff on that format let me know also.
One other thing that is a totally different subject. I took a pilgrimage
across country last summer during this very month. My main destination
was TEXAS. I spent a couple of days in Austin. Had to check out 6th and
Congress. So, can anyone who is an Austin native past or present clarify
exactly where the old Woolworth's store was. I was guessing either
where the ABC (ABS?) Bank is now or the Starbucks Coffee. The buildings on the
other two corners looked to extravagant to be a Woolworth's at any time. Of
course it may not have been on the very corner of 6th and Congress at all, I've
just been working in corners lately.
Austin's a cool city. I hope to go back there some day and spend more
time
and check out the music scene on 6th Ave. Is it still a thriving center
for
music? Anyone care to lament or exalt about Austin feel free.
Thanks,
~Nancy

There was a Woolworth store right opposite the Alamo. However as far as
the
song goes I think it was poetic licence on Nanci's part. Perhaps the
store
never existed in that exact location. Over to our old time Austinites.

Hi back -NANCY
I hold the original first copy made of what i like to call THE NORWAY
TAPE
-which was sent to a PAUL ROBERTS in OSLO by way of PHILADELPHIA .It
contains lots of the video to which you speak on NANCI-NET. There are
tons
of interviews in her early years with her parents and yes even great
-aunt
-ELLIMAY-to which TROUBLE IN THESE FIELDS was dedicated .The original
was
dropped and broke but i had made a copy in our format before this
happened.
Also I even tried through GOLD MOUNTAIN ENTERTAINMENT to get a copy to
NANCI
for a keep sake but never heard back .
A few people have sent me US money orders in the area of $40.00 to
cover a
reproduction of the tape that does start out jumpy for a few minutes but
much improves ! my e-mail is rboucher@nexicom.net SHOULD YOU REQUEST a
copy
made and want to send me up a address request to send on the money
order so
I can get my video man working on the job .To the best of my knowledge
there
are only three other copies in the world and it contains tons of stuff
even
NANCI thinks was lost through time on the cutting room floor. E-BAY
could
make me rich but that's what TRUE NANCI FANS DO!
LONG LIVE THE MESSAGE BOARD!

From: "Ed Maier" (evmaier@sbcglobal.net>
The guitar is a Martin HD35, recorded with a Shure 101 mic directly
into the
mixer of a Santa Cruz soundcard, and converted on the fly to mp3 using
Real
Jukebox. There is some fidelity loss with mp3, and background white
noise
can be heard, but I don't really want to spend any money on "real"
recording
gear. I think there's enough quality left in the recording to get a good
idea of the guitar's voice. I bought it last month at a scratch & dent
sale
at the local Guitar Center. I had a good setup done on it, and had the
micarta saddle replaced with bone.

Ed -- thanks for sharing your new guitar sound with us. Awesome!
This
must be the one you talked about over at the nancinet cafe? Don't
just
give all the credit to the strings -- a good player makes a good guitar
sing
like that. Congrats!

Ed,
What a sweet, sweet sound! There is just NOTHING like that Martin
bottom
end. And I have to say you have a very sensitive touch. The only
problem
with it was that it wasn't long enough. Let's hear more.
While were on the topic of guitar sounds.... anyone have any opinions on

hi folks, just wanted to share with all those who appreciate Nanci's
music,
I've heard Iris Dement & Lucy Kaplansky, both of whom I've seen live,
but
never have I been so impressed with anyone, as Tift Merritt, Nanci on
her
own web site, said she was listening to her.
Tift Merritt is an angel, whom we should all listen to.

Well I was eulogising about her, over a year ago when "Bramble Rose"
came
out. One of the very best debuts in quite some time.
Glad others are getting the message.

I stumbled on Ms. Tift while I was visiting my brother in D.C., and it
turns
out that his girlfriend has a connection with her. I seem to recall
that
Cynthia was her roommate or the friend of her roommate in college.
My bro and I were going somewhere in her car, and I noticed Tift's cd
and of
course wanted to hear it. I was impressed right from the start, and
it's
nice to see my opinion validated! :-)
I do wonder where her folks got her name, though.

Well I have just been serenaded by the finest debut record of the year
so
far, eastmountainsouth. I had never heard of them until a copy
(courtesy of
their record label) popped through the letterbox. What a gorgeous disc.
Beautiful harmonies as the male (Pete Adams) voice blends beautifully
with
the female (Kat Maslich). It's a sort of pop/rustic blend, not a million
miles from Gillian Welch/David Rawlings. The instruments colour the
music in
a lilting, half light. The guitars glide in, a bazouki or mandolin may
ring
out, a piano may tinkle. It could come from any era, it has that
timeless
quality. Yet it is undeniably modern, as some ambient keyboard sounds
lightly wash the background. The songs are well crafted, all adding up
to
something that has simply taken my breath away.
Does anybody know anything about this duo?
I need to know more!!!!

John -
One of the things I like about this crowd is the leads we get from
others'
musical wanderings. They have a website where you can listen to 4 or so
cuts:

Well worth the trouble to click and listen!
They have been added to my wish-list!!
