Subject: NN: Harvest Moon - limited NN content

From: DvBGardner@genelogic.com
Not much happening on the NN list these days. All the excitement and
passionate discussions have moved over to Shawn's nancinet cafe. When we
first suggested such an alternative chat venue, we didn't mean for the
original nancinet to become so, so...QUIET !
So, for those of you who don't want to be entangled in deep political
discussions and are looking for some less exciting (or -- for some of
us --
MORE exciting !) stimulation...
There should be an awesome Harvest Moon tonight for most of us to see.
Okay, okay, and as for NN content: You can listen to Nanci AND read the
lyrics to her songs outside while the Harvest Moon is shining
brightly...

Since I am a fanatic about looking things up, here is an excerpt from
definition from Encarta 2004:
Harvest Moon, full moon at harvest time in the North Temperate Zone, or
more
exactly, the full moon occurring closest to the autumnal equinox on
about
September 23. During this season the moon rises at a point opposite to
the
sun, or close to the exact eastern point of the horizon.
Moreover, the moon rises only a few minutes later each night,
affording on
several successive
evenings an attractive moonrise close to sunset time and strong
moonlight
almost all night if
the sky is not clouded. The continuance of the moonlight after sunset is
useful to farmers in
northern latitudes, who are then harvesting their crops.

Another note of astronomical interest: I've been observing Mars close
to the
moon around 10:30 CST. Mars is the closest to earth now than any other
time
between 1924 and 2287. It is huge, red, and beautiful: almost as bright
as
Venus.
(This is only distantly related to Nanci and her interest in moon
songs.)

Marvellous! Thanks for this. I've always wondered what it is that
inspired
Alison Krauss and others to sing about so beautifully, and now you've
made
sense of it for me.
Conor
also thrilled to have just discovered his favourite track on his current
favourite late-night cd (Lee Ann Womack's 'Something Worth Leaving
Behind')
is by his favourite songwriter, Gretchen Peters

Just got back from the observatory. Mars is wearing its "bikini" - a
major
dark feature just south of the equator that looks vaguely like a bikini
bottom. Tonight there was a tear in it! Woo HOO!! The south polar
cap is
almost gone - hard to see it at all tonight. Seeing wasn't that good
anyway, and with a full moon many details are washed out.
Put the moon filter on the scope and observed Luna for a while too.
Really
enjoyed it. Next time I will have to try and find craters with Nanci
connections. Maybe there is an Olaf or a Winter-Smtih.

Subject: NN: Emmylou Harris New Album!!!
Date: Wed, 10 Sep 2003 11:41:54 -0700 (PDT)
From: JAMES WARD (jward39212@yahoo.com>
A couple weeks ago I received an advance copy of
"Stumble Into Grace", a new album by Emmylou Harris.
I can only say that Emmylou continues to astound with
her music. Country radio should embrace "Jupiter
Rising", but it probably will not do so. All in all,
another masterpiece from this little lady. I forsee
another grammy to decorate her mantle.

She can have another Grammy, James, as long as she again thanks God for
Johnny Cash, as she did last time. :-)
JC was released from the hospital yesterday and is heading out next
week to
record Emmylou's competition for that Grammy. That won't get played on
country radio, either.

I was born knowing the words to Cash, Willie Nelson, and that whole
outlaw
gang (I'm 25), so I'm loving this American Recordings renaissance Cash
is
having. The video for "Hurt" is the most tragic, awe inspiring piece of
film
I've seen, and it's astonishing that the world has embraced it as it
has.
Though anybody who watched the MTV Music Video Awards, or whatever the
heck
they're called, will know both how little and how much respect the man
commands. Nominated for six, he only won one (for cinematography). But
several performers, winners, and presenters made reference to Johnny
Cash
and "Hurt."
This summer, I was lucky enough to see Cash perform twice at the Carter
Family Fold in Hiltons, VA, which isn't too far from my Asheville, NC
home
(I've since moved to Boston, too far from my mountains). Those are
memories
I'll treasure, share with my grandchildren someday, to whom I shall
have to
defend the truth of my claims.
And, uh, speaking of Emmylou...she's playing the Boston Folk Fest this
year,
along with Eric Taylor (that's ALMOST Nanci content!), Richard Shindell,
Catie Curtis, and Greg Brown (among many others). Hope to see some of
you
there.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
David,
John Cash never ceases to amaze me. The most
moving song I've heard in the last twenty
years is "Hurt", from his album "American IV,
The Man Comes Around". It was written by NIN,
but he takes it to a whole new level.
There is a picture of John expressing his
contempt for the Nashville machine with a
certain hand gesture. Willie Nelson used to
have a copy of it hung near the entrance to
his road show trailer. Here's the link, but
sometimes they get stripped by Majordomo.
(http://www.johnnycash.com/billboard.htm>;
If it does, put "www dot johnnycash dot com
slash billboard dot htm" in your browser.
Some of my favorite albums ever are by The
Highwaymen; Johnny Cash, Kris Kristoferson,
Willie Nelson, and Waylon Jennings. Check
them out if you happen to stumble across them.
I hope this also makes it to NN, but for some
reason, Majordomo doesn't like sbcglobal as
an ISP.
Subject: NN: Will the real Nancy please stand up.
Date: Thu, 04 Sep 2003 23:07:18 +0000
From: nancy (nhight@gloryroad.net>
I thought I would give this google search a try and see exactly what I
would find out about myself. I found all kinds of fascinating things.
I found out that I've published books and work for the government. I've
had many diverse carriers and several spouses. I've lived for many years
and lived during many lifetimes.
In Nelson Co, Va it is has been recorded that I own 2 cattle valued at
$25, 5 hogs valued at $7, 1 clock valued at $4, household and kitchen
furniture valued at $20
Total value of property: $56' Tax: $0.28
I even own a 1955 Chrysler that I keep parked in North County,
California.
I found that there are people I've never been and places I've never seen
that are associated with the alphabetic characters that make up my name.
So how am I to know who is the real me? Is there a trick to it or am I
just invisible or "invincible" to this kind of invasion because I've
never done anything (on the net) or "posted" anything that outstanding,
lengthy, or circumstantial enough that would give a more accurate,
visible or personally detrimental "hit"
There was one minuscule hit to me, the real me. I was listed as a "guest
in attendance" at a student senate meeting at the college I attended a
few years ago. It was the only student senate meeting I ever attended
because it was required for an assignment for a journalism class. The
meeting was as boring then as it reads now.
However when I googled my email address, the only hits were recent posts
to the NanciNet. Fascinating!
And when I used the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button, well let me tell
ya......
