I'm thinking about what cds to buy for Christmas. Can anyone recommend
any, either for presents or to help create a festive atmosphere? I
really miss hearing people recommend other singers on here.

now listening to Woman's Hour....

Three classy offerings which spring to mind as having pretty widespread
appeal (not just to alt country/folk fans) are this year's releases by:

Sarah Harmer
Jolie Holland
and Lori McKenna

Gotta dash to work. Sooo much good stuff this year - looking forward to
everyone's 'Best of' lists.

There's a new CD by The Innocence Mission called "Now the Day is Over."
I would describe it as an album of lullabies for adults. There are great
versions of Over The Rainbow, What a Wonderful World, Edelweiss and many
others, all done in the dreamy Innocence Mission style.

I also just picked up a new CD of Christmas tunes by Chris Isaak... I
haven't even listened to it, but it has to be good.

Howdy!
Conor was asking about Christmas and festive CDs. I get monthly emails
from Miles of Music and Village Records. Both places have excellent
reviews of good CDs to buy. Here's the links:

A few suggestions:

--Todd Snider's newest, "East Nashville Skyline"

EMMYLOU HARRIS - Light Of The Stable (Bonus Tracks)
Light Of The Stable debuted in 1979, with a title track featuring
backing vocals from Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton. The
sublime Rodney Crowell-penned "Angel Eyes," composed specially for this
album, features Ricky Skaggs on mandolin and Skaggs and Willie Nelson on
vocal harmony, and is just one of many highlights. This radiant acoustic
masterpiece - graced throughout with the presence of stellar guests -
features both contemporary and traditional gems, and is now expanded
with three newly recorded songs. Track Listing: Christmas Time's
A-Coming/O Little Town Of Bethlehem/ Away In A Manger/Angel Eyes/The
First Noel/Beautiful Star Of Bethlehem/The Little Drummer Boy/Golden
Cradle/Silent Night/Light Of The Stable (Rhino)

JUDY COLLINS - Christmas At The Biltmore Estate DVD
Judy Collins' career spans four decades and over 20 albums. She has been
praised as "one in a million," "the clearest bell" and "liquid silver."
In this memorable program, Judy visits the world-famous Biltmore Estate
- the largest private home ever built - for a special Christmas
celebration. She takes center stage in this magnificent setting,
performing classics as well as original pieces. (Region 1 Encoding)
Track Listing: Joy To The World/Silver Bells/Santa Claus Is Coming To
Town/ingle Bells/Hark! The Herald Angels Sing/What Child Is This?/The
Twelve Days Of Christmas/Come Rejoice/The Holly And The Ivy/All On A
Wintry Night/The First Noel/I Saw Three Ships/The Night Before
Christmas/O Come, All Ye Faithful (Pioneer/Geneon)

KEITH SYKES - All I Know
Legendary songwriter Keith Sykes has engaged in every aspect of the
music business for more than three decades. Certainly, he's mastered the
songwriting aspect of it, with tunes covered by the likes of Jerry Jeff
Walker, John Prine, Guy Clark, Rosanne Cash and Rodney Crowell, among
others. All I Know is classic Sykes, and he's invited a lot of friends
to make it happen including Kelly Mickwee, Eric Lewis and other great
Memphis musicians like Ross Rice and Jimmy Davis. Jerry Jeff Walker also
duets with Keith on a tune they co-wrote together, the bayou-flavored
"It Don't Matter." This self-produced collection contains great new
country/folk material with covers from Guy Clark ("Baby Took A Limo To
Memphis") and Nancy Apple ("Hard Luck And Old Dogs"). (Madjack)

AMOS GARRETT, DOUG SAHM & GENE TAYLOR - Return Of the Formerly Brothers
(Bonus Tracks)
This talented band is lead by Amos Garrett on lead guitar, Gene Taylor
on piano, and Doug Sahm on a variety of instruments. The lineup is
rounded out by a tight rhythm section and a few guest musicians (most
notably Queen Ida, who adds vocals and accordion to two numbers). Each
of the three men takes a turn in the vocal spotlight, and their choices
in material are consistent with their previous output. Doug Sahm's
version of Bob Dylan's "Just Like A Woman" is perfect, with Garrett's
unmistakable liquid guitar lines coursing through it. Gene Taylor, with
his blues background (and stints with Canned Heat, the Blasters, and
others), contributes a few of his roadhouse-fun originals. Amos
Garrett's greatest work is on Terry Allen's "Amarillo Highway". This
disc was originally released back in 1989. (Stony Plain Music)

Happy listening!

#1 Malcolm Holcombe - A Hundred Lies

Self-described, "an angel on one shoulder, a devil on
the other," Malcolm's road-weary lyrics burn into
your soul like those of no artist since Townes. We've
missed this guy Nanci fans, but it might not be too
late. Once you see him live you'll be kicking your
ass all the way to the closest whiskey bottle hoping
that a slug or two will induce at least a taste of the
impaired perplexity of these songs. Actually released
in 1996, this is very easily my CD of the year:

"Words wrapped up in losin'
Hammered to a wall
In a dirty city searchin'
In my mind all dressed in white."

NanciNews: A Very Generous Offer Indeed(/title>
A couple of Nanci's pals in the UK are getting married on 2 April, 2005.
Sarah Jones and Simon Lacquiere have asked their friends and family to
donate money in lieu of wedding presents, to a fund setup in their name,
benefiting Mines Advisory Group and the Vietnam Veterans of America's
Cambodia Fund. Lilly UK, for whom Sarah works, has very generously
offered to match dollar-for-dollar all monies donated.

Nanci thought this was all such a wonderful and generous thing, that she
wanted to share it with her fans. So, here is information on how you
too can help.

--------------------------------------------------

Sarah Jones & Simon Lacquiere - Wedding Gifts

May we both ask that you do not buy us wedding gifts. There really is
nothing that we need and would much rather ask, that if you are willing,
would you be kind enough to donate some money to the following charity.

Campaign For A Landmine Free World

Every 22 minutes, someone around the world is killed or maimed by a
landmine.

Landmines are designed not to kill, but to inflict injury, pain and
suffering. Victims who survive the massive bleeding inflicted by this
weapon require amputations, rehabilitation and reconstruction of their
lives.

It is estimated that 60 to 70 million landmines remain unexploded in the
ground worldwide. One-third of the worlds countries are littered with
landmines which, each year, kill or injure 26,000 men, women and
children, nearly 90 percent of whom are civilians.

A landmine can last a century in the ground until it is removed or an
unsuspecting person, such as a child or farmer, steps on it. The cost
to remove one landmine - produced for as little as £1.50p - can be as
much as £600.

Like doctors treating contagious diseases, deminers know that they, too,
may be a landmine's next victim. For every 5,000 mines cleared, one
deminer is killed and two are injured.

£15 will pay for three locally produced crutches in Angola.
£50 will buy four physiotherapy sessions for a landmine survivor in
Cambodia.
£80 provides a wheelchair or a custom made artificial limb to a landmine
victim in Ethiopia.

Please help to assist innocent victims of conflict worldwide.

We have opened an account for such funds to be paid into; it is entirely
at your own discretion if you chose to contribute. If you are willing
to contribute, could we be so bold to ask that you do so prior to the
2nd April to enable us to share with you the amount we have raised on
that day. The money will be paid directly to the Mines Advisory Group
based in Manchester, but will be shared equally with the Vietnam
Veterans Of America Foundation Cambodia Fund.

Please see account details below, if you have any questions please
contact us.

Bank:	Barclays Bank, PLC
Branch: 9, Highgate, Kendal, Cumbria
Account Name: Landmine Campaign
Account Number: 30524913

Thank you so very much.
