Subject: NN: Jimmy Buffett - License To Chill - No Nanci Credit
From: JAMES WARD (jward39212@yahoo.com>

I bought the new Jimmy Buffett CD this week entitled
"License to Chill" only because there is a duet with
Nanci Griffith entitled "Someone I Used To Love". It
is a great song!!!!!! But, after perusing the booklet
that came with the CD, Mr. Buffett thanks all of the
singers and songwriters who contributed to the disc.
Everyone EXCEPT Nanci.....there is not a single
mention of her at all except on the back of the case
where it lists the song and says "With Nanci
Griffith". If this is simply an oversight by
Buffett's record label...it sure as hell is a major
one! I can't believe this could happen to Nanci. BTW
it is the #1 Pop and Country Album on Billboard's
Charts for the week ending July 31, 2004. I just don't
understand how she could be overlooked in such a way.
Her duet is one of the better songs on the album.
Anyone got any opinions on this!
James

I was curious about the song--he may have ignored her on the liner
notes, but the reviewers all seem to be unanimous that the only two
tracks worth mentioning on the album are the Nanci one and the one with
Martina McBride, if it makes you feel any better!

Well, the reviewers are missing another great track which *many* people
think is the best one of all, which is the one with Will Kimbrough.
Check out Will's own work on his many albums.
Of course, I am partial to Our aNGel's song too!

The Country Music Channel (CMT) will show a documentary
film by the BBC about the history of American country
music, "Lost Highway", Aug. 5, 8:00PM EST. It should be
an interesting perspective. I believe Lyle Lovett will
be the narrator.

Subject: RE: NN: Eric Taylor in Dallas
From: Ron Hennessy (ronhennessy@msn.com>

Eric's show at Uncle Calvin's was a revelation to me.
Opening was Susan Lindfors, a good guitarist with a pretty mezzo-soprano
voice. She has a winning modesty, and a sly sense of humor. She said
she doesn't talk much. She was very shy as a child. She felt that a
person has only so many words to speak in a lifetime, and after you've
spoken your quota, you die. The trouble is you don't know your
allotment!
Then Eric came out, and Susan lingered to sing harmony with him.
He is a fine guitarist, I discovered, playing up to three different
melody lines at once. Unlike many performers of "pop" music, and like a
classical musician, Eric varies the dynamics and articulation of his
performances effectively using techniques such a sforzando, swells, and
crescendo. This enhances the drama and excitement of his songs.
He also enlivens his show with interesting and sometimes humorous
anecdotes about the impulses that led to writing. For example, before
performing "Birdland," he told a story about the time he was a child
living with his grandparents. He was looking at the pictures in the
family Bible, filled with Renaissance pictures of really good-looking
people. Even Judas was as handsome as Al Pacino. One picture showed a
magnificent man wearing a white robe and with enormous wings. Young
Eric asked his grandmother why the man had wings. She explained that we
all have wings after we die. He got the idea that we all become birds.
So "Birdland" is Heaven.
Not long after that his grandmother died, and, seeing her in the casket
at the funeral, he was horrified to see she didn't have wings! He
bawled, and his grandfather asked him what was wrong. After little Eric
had explained, his grandfather said, "I always knew she was going to
Hell."
After the concert I bought his "Resurrect" CD and had him sign it.
I told him I'd been a fan of his songwriting since Nanci Griffith's
recording of "Storms."
He said, "Really? I like that song. I think I'll record it myself for
my next album."
I said I'd be looking for it.
When I got home, I played "Resurrect," and it is fabulous, all eleven
songs!
My recommendation to you is to buy it and enjoy.
Best wishes to all,
Ron Hennessy

Vintage: Too old! (1949)
NN: Can't remember when I joined - must be 5 or 6 years
at least!
I can't remember what first introduced me to Nanci: probably via Emmylou
Harris, who's music I have listened to since the 70's. The first cd I
bought was Lonestar state of mind. I have seen Nanci most times she's
been in the UK since the OVOR tour, and even scheduled a weekend trip to
New York to see her, Rodney Crowell et al at Tarrytown in March 2001! I
don't have all the cds, but do have a number of videos which I watch
when I can, and enjoy the DVD of winter marquee. I usually have a tape
with my walkman, although I tend to listen to the radio more.
Current NG favourites
I don't listen to music nearly as much as I used to - even though I now
have a cd player in the car! The trouble is the rest of the family -
they moan! I like - in no particular order - Tecumsah Valley &
everything on OVOR, Gulf Coast Highway, Trouble in the fields, TALBTWMM,
Once in a very blue moon, 5 & dime, and many more
Other favourite artists
Sorry, can't limit it to 5!
Emmylou, MCC, Kasey Chambers, Dar Williams, Lucy Kaplansky, Kate Rusby,
The Poozies, Kate Campbell (saw her in the UK last summer), Alison
Krauss, Shania, Elton John, Simon & garfunkel, most late fifties/early
sixties music, choral music
Paul
PS now listening to WFUV and on Friday 2-4 NY time they have Mountain
Stage: Performing today, Dar Williams, Kasey Chambers, James McMurtry,
Rodney Crowell, and Laura Cantrell

I saw Iris in concert last night. She was in fine voice! I am a happy
camper because she played most of my favorites, including Let the
Mystery Be, Mama's Opry, Hotter Than Mojave, Our Town, Wasteland of the
Free, and My Life.
She mentioned her husband and told us that they had been married for a
year-and-a-half and were *still* in love; then she dedicated to him the
song (not sure of the exact title) I Have a Feeling This Love is Gonna
Last. So, yeah, Iris seems pretty happy in her new life with Mr. Brown.
:)
I had a thoroughly wonderful time...if you have the chance to see Iris,
go!
