Since I get my news in the digest format, I have delayed in responding
to Sarah's
question. I know of the following videos that came out in single
format. Many
were released as promotional tapes and others can be found on VHS
compilations such
as "Country Video Monthly," "The Reel Thing," etc. These are:

  - Daddy Said (1984)
  - From A Distance (1987)
  - I Knew Love (1988)
  - I Don't Want To Talk About Love (1989) [can also be found on the
European PAL
format VHS "The Ultimate Country Video" released in 1996]
  - It's A Hard Life (1989) [can be found on "The Reel Thing," August
1989]
  - Late Night Grande Hotel (1991) [can be found on "The Reel Thing,
Volume
3"]
  - Be Still (with Peace Together) (1993) [can be found on "Rock Video
Monthly,
August 1993]
  - Speed of the Sound of Loneliness (1993) [can be found on "Country
Video
Monthly, May 1993" and Nanci Griffith Video Press Kit (1993)]
  - Across the Great Divide (1993) [can be found on "Country Video
Monthly,
September 1993"]
  - This Heart (1995) [can be found on "Country Video Monthly, May 1995"]
  - Well...All Right (1996) [can be found on "A Tribute to Buddy Holly"
VHS]
  - Goodnight, New York (2003) [can be downloaded as a QT movie from
Nanci's official
website]

Commercially released full-length videos on which Nanci appears or can
be heard
include:
One Fair Summer Evening (1988)
The Chieftains: The Bells of Dublin (1991)
Other Voices, Other Rooms (1993)
The Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert (1993)
Red Hot + Country (1995)
Other Voices, Too (1998)
The Chieftains: An Irish Evening (2000)
Don McLean: Starry, Starry Night (2000)
Annabelle's Wish (2000)
Winter Marquee (2002)

There may be others...but these are those of which I am aware.

Good viewing and good listening,

Hi folks: Just a quick recommendation. Both the Crickets and their
Buddies and the
Portable Kate Campbell albums are terrific. Nanci does a great version
of Heartland
on the Crickets album, and does backup and duets on some other songs.
On the other
album, I am so glad that my two favorite singer songwriters have gotten
together.
THey do a wonderful version of Galaxie 500. The album is mostly
composed of some imaginative remakes of gems from previous Kate
albums. I remember so vividly meeting some friends in Atlanta to see
Nanci and then Kate perform. That indeed was this side of heaven.

Hard to say. New surroundings mean new thoughts. Longing for home after

stir certain emotions that could generate some new material. If
Ireland, all those
haunting melodies could mean new tunes as well.

Well, her writing might turn more political; that'd be
interesting.

I'm not sure of where else Nanci might call home - she is fond of those
cities
across the pond. Maybe Italy or Spain? She loves Spanish and various
forms there
of.

Does John Lennon living in New York count as an expatriate?

It would not affect my opinion of Nanci, heck I've said the same thing
as a joke
myself, if she has the means to move and enjoy it, I hold no ill will
towards her.
You have to live and be where you feel the most peace at. Besides,
you can take
the American out of the country, but you can't take the country out of
the American.

I think no matter where our girl was living, she'd still be HER.

Well John Prine already owns a home in Galway, Southern Ireland and
spends a good
deal of time there. In fact I believe that John is already planning a
permanent
move to Ireland.

Steve Earle stays in Galway for long periods each year, away from his
Fairview,
Tn., home.

Remember Nanci lived in Ireland, part-time, for a good while in the
early 90's and
wrote "I Would Bring You Ireland" and recorded it on her "One Fair
Summer Evening" disc.

I think she means what she says in this particular debate and I feel
that once she
left the USA she may never return, even for tours, as she is already
far more successful
in the UK and Europe, sales wise (records and concerts), than she is in
her homeland.

What do I think about it? Hmmmm. I understand the desire. But unless
I were to
100% embrace another country as my own and become a citizen, I think
for me it is
better to stand and fight. In other words all or
nothing -- If you leave you can't come back, and must participate in

Bill,

Chancy topic! Impossible to comment on without revealing ones
sympathies, I'm afraid.

I've threatened to do the same thing... though I've considered a move
north to friendly
Canada--and no one would care if I left town. However, as much as I
have major disputes
with the current administration and my fellow citizens who elected it,
I don't think
I could abandon my country and I hope when push comes to shove that
Nanci won't
either. We need eloquent voices like Nanci's to change attitudes. As
attractive
as it may be to head off for a more "sane" home, especially for someone
with the means to choose to live wherever she wishes, it is a cowardly
thing to
do. I don't think Nanci's a coward.

Is it at all possible that Nanci made this comment in jest? It could
have been if
it was on a radio interview or something. It could also be that I'm
just makin excuses
cause I really don't want her to leave :( My concern is that if she
moves to the
UK or Ireland where she has a bigger fanbase, her music might get a
little too commercial
again. I don't believe that would change her songwriting for the worse
(it didn't
change too much while she was at MCA), but I think the majority of fans

more folk CDs like I do.)

Is there any confirmation that she said this? Forgive my
skepticism, but this myth has circulated around many celebrities
ever since the 2000 election. Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin,
Barbara Striesand, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Rob
Reiner...just about every celebrity known to have political
views that oppose Bush has had this statement attributed to them
by right wing talk radio and other similar venues. To my
knowledge the only celebrity that ever said anything like this
was film director Robert Altman who said it in a 2000 interview
as a joke since he has lived in France for years. I guess the
Republican rumor mill has run out of household name celebrities
to trash so they go for the more esoteric making it Nanci's
turn. Although it is well known that Nanci is supporting John

But if we can't, you'll only have yourself to blame this time, Bill! :)

Effect: I think that immediate locale would have a greater effect than
a specific
country. Sort of the difference between moving from Nashville to LA or
moving from
Nashville to Buffalo, Wyoming, as much as moving from
Nashville to Dublin, Ireland.

I would expect the immediate surroundings and the individuals that she
comes in
contact with on a regular basis to have more impact than the
surrounding nation.
But there are differences between the way people in
different countries behave and in their views, so I guess there would
be *some*
effect in that sense. But not being able to predict who she might hang
with or what
sort of neighborhood she would live in, I don't think we could predict
the effect
on her music very well.

Not Ireland? My recommendation would be New Zealand. Beautiful country.
Great people.
Differed from Australia by not supporting the war in Iraq. I even know
of a few
good settings where she could put on a nice intimate show for her local
fans. There's
a band shell in the Botanical Gardens here in Wellington where I would
just love
to hear her play some summer evening. Ahhhhh. . . Ecstasy.

Expat musicians - Craig Fuller left Pure Prairie League after recording
Amie to
go to Canada to avoid the draft. PPL continued on, including a hit with
a cover
of Buddy Holly's "That'll Be The Day" (which even makes a roundabout
connection
back to Nanci) and after Jimmy Carter pardoned the draft dodgers,
Fuller returned
to make some good music with American Flyer, with Eric Kaz as a duo,
and for awhile,
with Little Feat - the only albums where I've been able to appreciate
Little Feat.
Though he's still a great singer (IMHO), he was never again as creative
as on those
first two PPL records. Anybody know what he's been doing since he left
Little Feat?

Opinion of Nanci: I just think it would be sort of silly*. It wouldn't
change anything.
Then again, it wouldn't make me think any less of her music.

* UNLESS events transpire to impact the functioning of the upcoming
election and
GW remains in office without a clear electoral decision. Then a
departure might
be a good thing or a bad thing, but it wouldn't be silly.

As a long timer lover of Nanci's music I am not sure how it would
affect her actual
music. Living in Ireland seemed to inspire her. Maybe leaving the
country would
jumpstart her. My only concern with leaving for
political reasons is that it seems that she is so submerged (obsessed?
not right
word either), surrounded, whatever...with politics and george w. that
her music
becomes all about politics. She is of course free to sing about
whatever she wants,
but I want the majority of my music to not be political...or if it is
political
let it be subtly so. I don't like being slapped in the face with it.
My other
favorite music is by the rock band Concrete
Blonde and they released a live cd and chose to include a little
passage where the
lead singer basically curses out George Bush. She also seems to make
a point at
most of her shows to at least get a little line in about him.
Now I love, love, her music, but I don't agree with half of her
political views
so I just ignore it...but she is also starting to incorporate more
politics (released
an anti-war cd single). Like I said, this is all fine and good, but
when it becomes
all encompassing it gets to be too much for me personally. Just my
2.5 cents.

I would hope Nanci would stay in the United
States...but that is my selfishness, because I adore
her and her music so much. I don't think Nanci needs
a "JUMPSTART" in her career either as I think "Clock
Without Hands" contained some of the best work of her
career. I am counting the days until "Heart and Mind"
is released.

That said, I do believe the political antics of some
candidates qualifies as entertainment. However, it is
my thought that entertainers should not enter into the
arena of politics while being paid to entertain. Back
in June at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Nanci urged
everyone present to register to vote and get out and
vote. She stated it didn't matter for whom you voted
as long as you voted. Not one word of Bush bashing
was involved!

Since it is the start of the RNC gathering this week and I am in
a good mood, I figure I will add my thoughts on the topic.

If Nanci left the country, I would continue to buy her music. I
listen to Nanci's music because of her talent as an artist, not
because of her political ideologies - some of which I agree with
and some of which I disagree. Nanci's politics play a part in
her artistry, just as they should in each of our daily lives,
but they have not consumed her artistry nor, in my opinion,
detracted substantially from her artistry. (Too bad the same
can not be said of Natalie Maines and the Dixie Chicks.) Nanci
is intelligent and articulate enough to elaborate on her
position on an issue and while I don't always agree, I respect
that.

It might be interesting to hear a Nanci "expatriate" album. I
can't help but think of some of my favorite albums that
expressed a call for change with the status quo - John
Mellencamp's "Scarecrow" and "The Lonesome Jubilee" or Tracy
Chapman's debut album.

I would hope that Nanci won't ultimately move, but it won't
change my vote. And, I guess she and I will cancel each other
out at the polls.

Nanci could do a lot worse than head for France, a country that
actually =
seems to have learnt from its mistakes and is not laden with
ideological =
baggage.

France lost a colonial war in Algeria in eight years of bloody conflict
=
in the 1950's. Since then they have adopted a wholly pragmatic
approach =
to gradually rebuild relations with Algeria specifically and the Arab =
world more generally to the point where President Chirac is now
regarded =
as a trusted and respected figurehead across the Arab world. Assisted =
by this enlightened approach, Algeria recently returned President =
Boutiflika to power with 80 percent support (in internationally =
supervised elections). The fundamentalists had been marginalised, =
polling less than 5 percent. The form of government they have may not =
be 'democratic' in the strictly western sense, but it is a pluralist =
representitive form of government which works in the context of their =
particular circumstances.

The US and Russia, by contrast, are still locked in the 'might is
right' =
mindset of the Cold War era, seemingly thinking they can impose their =
will over recalcitrants with the nasty weapons they have wasted =
trillions of dollars developing over the decades. The failure of this =
approach has been starkly highlighted by the catastrophic outcome of
the =
Chechen rebel school siege. It will be continue to be highlighted by =
the inevitable failure of the US in Iraq and Afghanistan to manufacture
=
an outcome to their liking.

I strongly urge anyone interested a possible peaceful alternative to a =

Hi all,

I just switched my NN s*bscription because of a change of e-mail
address, and noticed when I got the welcome message that it's getting
a bit out-of-date, especially with the FAQs and album reviews and all
that good stuff. There's a reference to Nanci's retirement in 1997
that makes the list sound downright obsolete to someone looking for
new news about Nanci Griffith.

This is not meant as criticism of listguru Bill, who undoubtedly
spends more time than he bargained for just keeping the messages
slogging through the ether. But it seems like something easily fixed.
Everything that needs updating has been covered at some point on the
list and is probably in the archives.

I'd be happy to help compile and edit any updates to the welcome
message, if that's something the group (and especially Bill) would
like to see. A good starting point is Mark Ferguson's NanciNet User's
Guide and FAQ here: http://home.austin.rr.com/ferghome//nanfaq.html.
It is of course the basis for the bulk of the welcome message,
composed by the list founder, and seems to be more up-to-date than the
current list welcome message. Beyond that, is there anything else that
needs to be included?
