Netters -
Just a quick note that the Songwriter Train (limited to 70 seats) from
Toronto to Vancouver, March 25-29 with Nanci,Tom Russell, Mary Gauthier
and Gretchen Peters sold out quickly in December.

However, we have been hit with a bunch of cancellations and so just had
several spaces open up.

Full details are at:

Let me know if you have questions.

Subject: NN: Weighing In with My Best
   From: Ryan P. McCabe [ryanpmccabe@gmail.com]
   Sent: Thursday, January 20, 2005 8:05 PM

Ten is a hard number to narrow my list down to (hence the Honorable
Mentions). Nevertheless, here is my personal list of Outstanding Music
from 2005, presented in alphabetical order:

1. Dave Rummans "Love Is Strongest in Our Weakest Moments" [CDBaby.com]
- Portland, OR based singer-songwriter that I discovered through iTunes.
Features the beautifully haunting title track, as well as a stunning,
acoustic version of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)"

2. Elton John "Peachtree Road" [Universal Music Group] - It's been said
enough times, but this album (Elton's 43rd album in 35 years) really
does hearken back to the days of "Honky Chateau" and "Madman Across the
Water." After years of schlocky movie ballads and two giant Broadway
shows, Elton finally brings himself back to the place that works best
for him: bluesy rock & roller.

3. Elvis Costello "The Delivery Man"[Lost Highway Records] & "Il
Sogno"[Deutsche Grammophon] - EC proves that he can not only be a little
bit Rock & Roll, but he can also be a little bit classical too. Polar
opposite albums, to say the least, but unmistakeably Elvis Costello.

4. Jeff Buckley "Grace" (Legacy Edition)[Columbia Records] - Buckleys'
brilliant breakout album made even more beautiful by the addition of a
second disc of rarities, as well as a DVD featuring videos and a "Making
Of.." documentary. The best reissue of the year by far.

5. Kings of Convenience "Riot on an Empty Street"[Astralwerks] - Simon
and Garfunkle meets Belle & Sebastian with this acoustic duo from the
frozen fjords of Scandinavia. Their songwriting and perfect harmonies
make this a wonderful Sunday afternoon album.

6. Marianne Faithfull "Before the Poison" (Import) [Na•ve Records] -
Marianne's final record? Say it isn't so! With help from Nick Cave and
PJ Harvey, Marianne once again proves that she is the Elder Stateswoman
of Rock Chicks. She's migrated from folk waif to drugged-out punk
rocker to Wiemar chanteuse to grande dame with the nothing but the
greatest of ease. If this is, in fact, her final record at least she
will have gone out with a bang.

7. Nanci Griffith "Hearts in Mind" (Import) [New Door Records] -
Personally, I think this one's a masterpiece. I really cannot say
enough good things about Nanci's newest. It's already rivaling "The
Flyer" as my top Nanci record. Bonus kudos to Le Ann Etheridge for
"Back When Ted Loved Sylvia" (my personal favorite on the record).

8. Omara Portundo "Flor De Amor" [Nonesuch Records] - Portundo caught
fire with Roy Cooder's Buena Vista Social Club, and has stepped out on
her own with an inspired collection of what equate to musical love
letters. Great for intimate dinners or festive gatherings of friends.

9. Patty Griffin "Impossible Dream" [ATO Records] - I have a trio of
female singer-songwriters that I hold in the highest regard: Nanci G.,
Joni Mitchell, and Patty Griffin. Patty's songwriting keeps maturing
with each record she puts out. There's something about the music and
lyrics that can make the worst days so much better. Her beautiful "When
It Don't Come Easy" has quickly become a personal anthem of mine.

10. Pink Martini "Hang on Little Tomato" [Heinz Records] - It took
almost ten years, but PM is back with a vengeance. Well, maybe not a
vengeance, but at least they're back with the usual unusual mix of
French, Brazilian, and Japanese influences (to name a few). A worthy
follow-up to the international sensation "Sympathique" And great fun in
concert, too!

Honorable mention: Ray LaMontagne "Trouble"; YoYo Ma "Plays Ennio
Morricone"; Scissor Sisters "Scissor Sisters"; Diana Krall "The Girl in
the Other Room"; Loretta Lynn "Van Lear Rose"; "Garden State"
soundtrack; U2 "How to Dismantle and Atomic Bomb"; Bebel Gilberto "Bebel
Gilberto"; Kanye West "The College Dropout"; Arcade Fire "Funeral"; A
Girl Called Eddy "A Girl Called Eddy"; Prince "Musicology"

I've now counted in Ryan McCabe's late submission. His choices had a
significant effect in that they pushed our Nanci into a clear number two
spot.

Here then is the *final* final chart;) I agree that archiving it along
with the rest of them is desirable. I would be very grateful if either
Susan Peete or Shelly Brisbin (who I think used to be involved in this
kind of thing) were able to make this happen. And if not one of them,
then anyone who knows how it's done! Muchas gracias. TC.

1 Patty Griffin - Impossible Dream (9 votes)
2 Nanci Griffith - Hearts In Mind (8)
3 Kasey Chambers - Wayward Angel (7)
4 Alison Krauss - Lonely Goes Both Ways (7)
5 Mindy Smith - One Moment More (6)
6 Mary Chapin Carpenter - Between Here And Gone (5)
7 Norah Jones - Feels Like Home (5)
8 Buddy Miller - Universal United House Of Prayer (4)
9 Eliza Gilkyson - Land Of Milk And Honey (4)
10 Tift Merritt - Tambourine (4)

I would be happy to post the "Best OF" list. I'll let you all know when
it's up.

I didn't send in my top ten. I didn't have a change to set the time
aside to figure it all out. I did buy an album this year that I've been
waiting to come out on CD. I've been trying to find it for years, since
a moving company lost a box of my vinyl albums back in 1975. (I was
crushed). It is the old B.W. Stevenson's album titled MY MARIA. I just
love that record and haven't stopped playing it. I am driving the
neighbors crazy blasting the stereo. The CD is combined with his other
album CALABASAS. I'm happy, happy.

Bill must of pulled some strings up there for me.

Cheers,

Sue

Greetings from a land downunder, where I have just managed to surface
from a joyous bath in the glory & praise of your adulation following my
success in submitting the top 3 cds of 04.

How did he do it? I hear you ask. A process of elimination? Hardly!! I
only bought 3 cds that qualified. That simple.
In reality you picked them for me, as I take careful note of your likes
& recomendations . I admit that all 3 are in my top ten fav artists &
until I get the new Nanci I am perfectly content to wallow in helpless
euphoria over Patty Griffin. The next 2 I shall acquire will Mary Chapin
& Iris Dement, can't recall the titles, but that should boost their
sales...

Well done to those who contributed, & thanks to Tony for the list.

The splashing sound you are about to here is me returning from whence I
came...
Barry.
