NEWS FLASH !!!!
AUSSIE ALTERNATE COUNTRY AFICIANADO FINALLY SPEAKS OUT ON "HIM".
The only Semi-sedentary sheepfarmer surviving on NN agreed to be
interviewed today on his response to hearing the new Nanci Cd. His
concise critique is as follows:
"I give this the big Thumbs Up. At last, a return to the sublime
celebration of the finest instrument of all--the pure voice of NG. Not
sullied or muffled by the excesses of the BMO & background vocals. This
CD shows a confidence & style that tells me a few demons have been faced
& defeated since the CWH release. I like it a lot.".
When pressed further the shepherding sage revealed he was surprised that
"Last Train Home" popped up so soon after getting a run on Winter
Marquee, but said its a great tune anyway. When asked his reaction to
the Vietnam & War references he admitted being somewhat confused re
references to Graham Greene, & the Saigon River (Is that the Mekong?) &
totally confused as to why souls of Gallic extraction would be mentioned
in conjunction with those of Viet & US origins. On being asked to expand
this further the response was:
"Well, my interpretation of history is that every time the colonising
French heard the sound of a breech bolt closing they scarpered back home
(taking with them the heads of the stone carved monuments of Vietnamese
cultural history) only returning to resume their "sovereignty" when the
guns again fell silent. If this is correct the number of Gallic souls
floating down the "Saigon River" may not be as significant as the
millions of Vietnamese or the thousands of Americans (and their allies).
Ask a Vietnam citizen which people he holds in lowest regard. Americans?
NO. You are but a drop in the ocean of the history of Vietnamese
occupation".
And what caused you to form such opinion ? the interviewer asked.
"Well, like Nanci, I too trod the earth of Vietnam, used my eyes, asked
the questions & made my judgments."
So you support Nanci on her involvement in Vietnam?
"Of course, when you have had a fellow human being, with next to no
limbs, eat an apple from your hand whilst perched on a bit of board with
a couple of castors underneath, you remain in no doubt of the worth of
Nanci's involvement in Landmine issues."
When asked for a final comment the fifty something feral farmer said:
"If you yearn for a significant cultural experience in your life & can
see that a Carribean Cruise Boat won't give it to you. go to
Vietnam...with your eyes (and mind ) open. Go not for what has passed,
but to experience a beautiful country and a beautiful people."
At that point the interviewer noted the Nanci devotee was, once again,
listening to Hearts In Mind, and stole quietly away.

Thank goodness I'm not the opnly one confused by the
use of Graham Greene.

Yes--BUT
1) THE QUIET AMERICAN is set in Saigon while Nanci is
singing about Hanoi.
2) THE QUIET AMERICAN portrays a very not nice
American who's responsible for terror bombing in a
main public Square.
This is not the usual portrayal Nanci uses for her
Viet Nam pieces. The Americans she portrays are
generally nice young men--like Pyle seems to be--but
don't have his political side.
So is there a reason she brought in a more cynical
side of American involvement?
Or is she using a literary illusion with no particular
relevance except to the general era and place?
That's what I don't understand. Not who Greene is or
what book THE QUIET AMERICAN is, but her use of this
piece of literature in this sequence of Viet Nam
songs?

I thought of it as more of an atmosphere thing. I never read the book -
just saw the movie - and honestly didn't remember which town they were
in (Hanoi vs. Saigon). There was a cartoon in yesterday's paper - a kid
sitting in front of his computer and he walks away and his mom says "are
you done with your homework?" He replies: "MY BRAIN IS FULL."
I do like the new record a lot, as I've said. Now that all of Nanci's
stuff is on my iPod I find myself hearing songs I haven't listened to
much from some of the recent records I haven't liked much. Individually
some of those songs are quite wonderful, but they're from pieces I never
could get into. This record I still play in it entirety as a complete
work and I enjoy it.
I can easily hold contradictory thoughts in my head so maybe that's why
the inconsistencies just blow right by.

Subject: Forthcoming Jamie Hartford CD with Nanci

Hi All,
I have just been looking at the Emmylou Harris website at
http://www.emmylou.net and find that she and Nanci will be appearing on
a forthcoming CD by Jamie Hartford. The title of the CD will be "Part
of Your History (The Songs of John Hartford)" More information on this
CD can be found on the New Sheriff website at
http://www.newsheriff.net/ns_artist.cfm?a=3DHartford and at
http://www.newsheriff.net/
It appears that Jamie Hartford is recording an all-acoustic project
around songs written by his late father, John Hartford. The project is
still in progress, and Nanci is listed as one of the musical guests who
has added vocals. Nanci's picture with Jamie can be found in the
"Scrapbook" on the website at http://www.newsheriff.net/photos.cfm To
the best of my knowledge this CD has not yet been released, but is
supposed to come out sometime soon in 2005. Be on the lookout...

Wanted to let all of you Emmylou Harris fans know
about an upcoming outdoor concert in Oxford, MS as
part of the Annual DoubleDecker Arts Festival. The
festival is scheduled for Saturday, April 30th.
Various local artists will be performing throughout
the day beginning at 10:00 a.m. with the finale being
Emmylou Harris at 8:00 p.m. Admission to the festival
is FREE. I saw Nanci at this same festival about 3
years ago. It is an outdoor concert with local Food
Vendors on hand to feed the hungry. I took lawn
chairs and managed to be right up-front-and-center for
the Nanci show.
Also, I have heard three new CD's which I think are
outstanding:
Jamie O'Neal - Brave
I really don't care for the "Trying to Find
Atlantis" song but the rest of the album is great!
Deana Carter - The Story of My Life
It might not include another "Strawberry Wine" but
this is one fine disc!
Jo Dee Messina - Delicious Suprise
Again, I don't give a damn about the "My Give A
Damn's Busted" tune but the rest of the album is
very good!
One other note: Each of the three above mentioned
discs are pure POP......not country! But the songs
and the singing are sensational!
James
