I first saw Nanci in London in 1989 as a teenager. Last night in Bristol
was probably my 8th or 9th time seeing her perform. I've been grumbly
about Nanci of late - underwhelmed by CD releases and live shows. I've
given up on imagining that one day she'll sing 'West Texas Sun' or
'Brave Companion of the Road' during a show. So maybe when I went to see
her in Bristol last night I was a bit more laid back about what to
expect. Anyway, I think in the end, it was one of the most enjoyable
Nanci gigs I've been to in years. I've never seen her on such good form,
looking relaxed and having a great time. She worked her magic on me!

I liked her set list even if there were no huge surprises - it included:

One blade shy (nice nod to our election with a dig at the Tory's)
 From a distance
Love conquers all
Listen to the radio
Gulf coast highway
Beautiful (I didn't like this on the CD at all but loved it live)
Hearts of Indoche
It's a hard life
Late night grand hotel
Tumble and Fall
Speed of the Sound of loneliness
I love this town

Rolling stones cover and Road to Aberdeen as encores.

It was one of the shortest sets I think I've seen her do but I even
liked that too - it left me wanting more. My only surprise was that she
didn't do 'Blue ball of war' which seems like it should be her main new
peace anthem.

Anyway - I had a blast.

I don't know if anyone's posted this here but there's a very nice
interview with Nanci on WFUV's website. It's a one-hour interview with
Pete Fornatale on his "Mixed Bag" show, with some in-studio songs by
Nanci and some things off the album. From March 25, 2005.

Definitely worth listening to.

(http://www.wfuv.org) - look in their archives

Some stuff I knew, some stuff I didn't.

Peter
(who wishes he liked the new album more)

At least she didn't do "If I Had A Hammer"! If I had a hammer for every
time I've heard that one at one of her shows, I'd have a hardware store.
Not that it isn't a good song, but it's time for a new anthem.
Hopefully she'll add Blue Ball of War soon . . . There are so many
absolutely stellar songs in her catalogue. Kinda wishing she'd slide
more of her standards off to make room for them.

Or if she'd just vary it for a change...If I had a Bottle Opener...Green
Bag of Peace...From an Austin Allegro...

Just my 17/6d worth.

On the Songwriter Train across Canada Nanci was losing her voice, so a
couple of times she recited "Beautiful" instead of singing it. It was
*very* moving and had several people - that I could see - in tears.

Oh, but she did!

I'm pleased that Nanci is going to be playing at the Botanical Gardens.
It's really an experience and should suit her very nicely. I can't wait.
Really wish she were playing somewhere closer to here tho (Knoxville,
TN).
