Subject: NN: Meeting Nanci
Date: Sun, 31 Jul 2005 19:52:10 -0400
I volunteered to work for the Great Waters Music Festival in
Wolfeboro,
NH this year. The big event was this weekend. There were a number of
really great entertainers there. I got to meet most of them. Ellis
Paul is
a really great guy. Christine Lavin is about the funniest person I've
ever
seen on stage. David Jacobs-Strain is a 21 year old, fantastic guitar
player. Bill Morrissey, Chris Smither, Richard Shindell were there.
Susie
Burke and David Surette, the groups Redbird and the Mammals played. Ken
Whitely and one of the best shows was put on by Ruthie Foster. Odetta
was
scheduled to appear, but she wasn't able to due to a recent broken hip.
Nanci played there on Friday night. Her bus pulled in around 2 o'clock
that afternoon and they had a little time before the show, so Nanci and
Pat McInerney wanted to see the town. I was the lucky one who drove
them.
I've heard and read a lot of stories about Nanci over the years, so
it was
nice to finally find out something first hand. I met her briefly one
time
before, but that was just to say hello. I spent about an hour with
her and
Mr. McInerney on Friday. Nanci is just as sweet and nice as I always
thought she would be. And Pat McInerney was great too. I did get to
meet
the rest of the Blue Moon Orchestra later, except for James Hooker. He
didn't seem to come off of the bus very much. There were a number of
acts
on before Nanci and it ran a little late. She didn't come on until about
10:30pm. But she played until midnight. She did a lot of songs from her
new album and her encore was Flyer. After the show I helped pack up
their
bus and she was on her way to New York for another concert the next
night.
If Nanci is mean and nasty, I saw absolutely none of that. However, I
can certainly understand how a normal person might get a little tired
and
on edge with the kind of schedule entertainers on the road have to
endure.
Hell, if I don't get at least 7 hours of sleep in my own bed, I'm
impossible to deal with the next day. As a matter of fact, the music
festival has taken a bit of a toll on me this weekend, so stop
annoying me
and leave me alone now.

I am so excited that Nanci is coming to Fargo, ND, August 19th. It will
be her first concert here, in a theater built in 1926. It was Fargo's
original silent movie house, remodeled several times over the years,
before it was finally restored to the Art Deco look it had in the
1930's. It has 870 seats. Just a perfect place for a concert, as I have
seen Leo Kottke, John Prine, Steve Earle, and many others perform
there.
I have seen Nanci twice before, in Minneapolis, MN, and always dreamed
of her playing here. My dream has come true, and I have aisle seats in
the 4th row.

The album that's impressed me most so far this year has to be Martha
Wainwright's debut.
With this stunning release she is already showing herself to be a talent
the equal of any of the other members of her illustriuous musical family
(Loudon, Rufus and the McGarrigles). The songwriting more than holds
its
own with any other singer-songwriter release this year (IMO), and the
way
she uses her voice is grade-A goose-bump material!
What's more, the CD is a grower, revealing new depths with each play. I
can't get enough of it at the moment.

PS on a more sombre note, I have to confess that I bought my first
Perry
Como LP recently. Yes, forty years after having my brain rewired by
'Like
A Rolling Stone', it's somehow morphed into a pudding. OK, I only
paid a
dollar for the thing, but even so, I've played it more than once. This
may be the beginning of the end.

Don't feel bad Tony - this past year I've been playing a lot of Doris
Day and Matt Munro. If I try to analyze it I'd say I'm reaching for a
perceived innocence from my youth - but I'm not trying to analyze, just
enjoy. And I do.

In the July/Aug edition of Performing Songwriter is a Nanci mention. In
the Note From The Editor, Lydia Hutchinson says,
".Celine Dion's voice is perfect and beautiful, but it has never made me
cry. Tom Waits sure has, though. So has Ray Charles. And Louis
Armstrong.
That little catch in Nanci Griffith's voice on "From A Distance"
moved me
like Bette Midler's perfect version never could."
Great little article. Dwight Yoakum on the cover!!

I've taken my truelove to fantastic concerts by Nanci, Beth, Gretchen,
Eliza, Shawn, Kim and many many more in our six years together, during
which time I've been passionate about this music. In fact she says
it was
me playing 'Car Wheels' that did it for her when we met. Our last three
holidays have been to festivals.
I'm always trying to get her to listen to my latest discovery, so that I
can slip in that they're coming within fifty miles of us on tour soon.
I make her tapes for the car.
I choose the background music when visitors come.
Recently someone asked her what music she liked, and she said 'Barry
Manilow'.

Hello Tony,
I remember as a kid watching the Perry Como show on TV in the 1950's. I
always thought he was one of the weaker "crooners," as that kind of
singer
was called.
On the other hand I've always loved crooners Bing Crosby and Frank
Sinatra, and liked Dean Martin a lot. Engelbert Humperdinck and Andy
Williams were also insufferably bland, in my opinion. (BTW, I'm
referring
to Engelbert Humperdinck the singer, not the fabulous composer of the
opera "Hansel and Gretel!")
Best wishes,

Can't keep from singing when I have my John Denver CDs on. Of
course, as
anyone who has followed recent e-mails can tell you, I am a highly
disturbed and despondent person from Utah. What can I say? If only
Nanci
would keep her promise to come back here and run against Orrin Hatch...

The more I think about my saying that I can see Fort Worth
from Files Valley, the less sense it makes. I don't think
it's possible to see a city's glow from fifty miles away.
Wonder what town it was? Grandview? Alvarado? Burleson?
Darn it, I just destroyed the magic again. (sigh.> Does
anyone think it *is* possible to see Fort Worth from fifty
miles away?

Ed,
Oh yeah. Here is a calculator to see the effect of a city on the night
sky based on city population and distance. Even if you get a low number
from the calculator, the visible "dome" of light from the city could
still
be readily visible on a dark, clear night. Depends on how much dust and
humidity are in the atmosphere too. So it could vary from visit to
visit.
http://darksky.org/infoshts/is011.html
I remember my father saying that when he was in the navy, they could be
hundreds of miles at sea and still see the glow from Boston (for
instance)
on the horizon.

Thanks, Ken! It wasn't my imagination. Using the formula, I came up with
I=0.19, about a 20% increase in brightness. Fort Worth is only about 38
miles (line of sight) NNW of Files Valley (61km), and considering a hot
summer night with no wind and the buildup of air pollution and
stagnation
over Fort Worth that day, Fort Worth's sky glow would have been easily
visible.
