Well, I have compiled the list of the top 10 CD's as voted by the
NanciNet Academy. With no drum roll, no red carpet, do drunken speeches
and especially no Joan and Melissa, here are the winners:

#1 Hearts in Mind-Nanci Griffith
#2 Blues and Lamentations-Kate Campbell
#3 Flower of Avalon-Tracy Grammer
#4 Aerial-Kate Bush
#5 Prairie Wind-Neil Young
#6 Paradise Hotel-Eliza Gilkyson
#7 Fair and Square-John Prine
#8 The Girl Who Couldn't Fly-Kate Rusby
#9 Devils and Dust-Bruce Springsteen
#10 Defying Gravity-Cheryl Wheeler

I assigned each "place" a number of points, this list represents the
total number points. (ie a first place vote got 10 points, second place
got 9 points and so on.) With a total of 161 different CD's on the list,
I'm not going to include anymore places or honorable mentions.

This was fun to do, thank you for entrusting me with the job!

I realized that most of the CD's I've been listening to heavily are from
2004. But I do have a few votes.

1. Flower of Avalon-Tracy Grammer
2. Blues and Lamentations-Kate Campbell
3. 12 Songs-Neil Diamond
4. Hearts in Mind-Nanci Griffith

Even with all of that room to spare, I'm going to leave off My Better
Self by Dar Williams. That was my biggest disappointment of the year.
I've tried, it just never won me over.

I'll post the standings tomorrow!

Hi there,

I've been a fan of Nanci's music for many years now, and have been
meaning to join this list for a long while, but have only just got
around to doing so!

I read the welcome e-mail with great interest... particularly the album
rankings.

LNGH is possibly my least favourite Nanci album, more to do with the
style than the songwriting, and this doesn't mean that I necessarily
dislike the album. BUT the actual song LNGH is one of my favourite Nanci
songs ever, completely at odds with the fact that I tend to prefer her
more 'rootsy' sounding albums. The line 'I'm watching this evening fire
burn away my tears' just makes me want to cry every time I hear it... it
just strikes such a chord with me! I couldn't be without this song!

Has the Other Voices Other Rooms video been released on DVD, in
particular has it been released in the UK? I would dearly *love* to see
this recording!!!!

Any interesting recent Nanci news that isn't on her website?? (I'm being
lazy, I should check the archives!)

Looking forward to listening in to you guys and hopefully contributing
too... best bit about these lists is the recommendations for other
artists that you pick up... I'm currently listening to the new Mary
Black album 'Full Tide' which is a real return to form for this artist
and even includes a very successful (imho) debut of her songwriting
skills!

Happy New Year to all Nanci fans!

Mike, welcome to the list! Thanks for introducing yourself. I waited a
good, long while before I ever posted, but was so glad I did.

In fact, I've not posted in quite some time. I've been moving back to
Los Angeles from Montgomery, AL, where I completed my graduate studies
in classical acting with the Alabama Shakespeare Festival last August.
Quite a ride that was, the program and the move.

So I'm out here in LA, auditioning and doing the seemingly endless tasks
required to get my career up and running.

Hello to all in NanciNet land; I've been reading your typically fabulous
posts even if I've been quiet. Thanks, as always. Thought this a good
time to reacquaint myself with the list.

Bought a bit of good music this year (not all of it from 2005), but
haven't been slayed by much of it:

Super Furry Animals, Tish Hinojosa, Julia Fordham ("That's Live" is
fantastic; are there any other Julia fans on the list?), Sondre Lerche,
Iris Dement (interesting concept, nice listen), Supergrass, Anita Baker,
Stevie Nicks (didn't want to live without "Leather and Lace" any
longer), Michael Buble (heard "Home," but didn't know who it was for the
longest time; I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying the whole album; I
find really young people doing the classics more often like posing than
gut-wrenching, like the difference between early Rosemary Clooney and
later), and I've caught up on my Kimberly M'Carver, whose music is
country enough (and more than quality enough) that it should have made
her a major star in that genre. And she credits Miss Griffith as a
major influence.

Good to see you back, Jonathan. With all that Shakespeare, your mails
are going to be worth waiting for!

And a big thanks to Molly for doing all the work of compiling the list
of our favourite albums of 2005. Even with Nanci's 'Hearts in Mind'
coming out earlier in the UK, it's good to see her up there. I'm very
pleased to know all the names in the top 10 and to have five of the
records too. How good to feel integrated!

And more thanks to James Ward for organising the Christmas Exchange. I
have just received one of the best presents of my life, a lot of
fantastic music from a member of the list, along with a very gratifying
response to my own effort this year.

Long live the Nanci Net!

Conor
