Too Late for Tears: No One Comes Between Jane And The 60,000 Things She Loves

Posted in Classic Film

Too Late For Tears is a noir classic, and one of those films I like to put on for friends who think classic movies are all milquetoast and twin beds. There’s a lot to say about cinematography, film restoration, and even how independent films were pieced together in the late 1940s. But as much as I love those topics, we’re not here for that. We’re here for the plot, and to glory in the ways people who say they love each other end up doing each other in. That’s the premise of CineMaven’s Till Death Us Do Part Blogathon, of…

“The Possum Story”

Posted in Random Personal Nonsense

In 2006, a weird thing happened at our house. I included the story on my former eponymous podcast, in the middle of an episode called Mystery Sinus Theater. The photo also made the local paper as part of one of those sights and sounds of Christmas photo thingies. Front page, baby! I subsequently made a Facebook post that I share each Christmas Eve. Because I’m not as good at social media as I think I am, the story hasn’t hit this blog. For your reading and hearing pleasure, here’s the original podcast audio (just the story), with caveats about old-timey audio quality…

I Did Not Buy a MacBook Pro

Posted in New Media and Tech, and Random Personal Nonsense

Update: Now with a dramatic reading, as heard on NosillaCast #606, at about the 30 minute mark. Thanks to Allison for the opportunity to relive high school poetry interp competition.  Lots and lots of people have asked if I bought a new MacBook Pro; the one with the dongles and the touch bar. And then, I couldn’t sleep. So I wrote a poem. I Did Not Buy a MacBook Pro When I’m on a podcast show, To talk the tech with friends I know, I cannot share their Apple glow, I did not buy a MacBook Pro. At coffee shops…

Roku Audio Guide Demo Cast

Posted in Access and Disability, New Media and Tech, and Pods and Presos

Roku added a spoken interface to its video streaming devices. This is good news for blind and print-disabled folks who like the idea of an inexpensive, easy-to-use, full-featured streamer. In this audio demo, I roll through the Audio Guide interface, and show you where it shines, and where it fails. If you have feedback or questions after listening, please hit me up on Twitter at @shelly. Direct Download Link

My Podcast Smorgasbord

Posted in Pods and Presos

In the course of promoting my book, iOS Access for All, I’ve been invited onto several podcasts. For the most part, these are new opportunities for me, though a few invites came from old friends. I’ll link you to all the shows, but I want to give you reasons to listen to specific ones, since they’re so different. Also, if you just can’t get enough of my yammering, subscribe to the All Shelly, All The Time podcast feed, to hear shows I make, co-host, or visit. Here’s what I did last week: Mac OS Ken: You should know first off…

Pee Dee Eff

Posted in Announcements

If you listen to me on podcasts when I’m feeling frisky, you know that making the PDF version of my books does not bring me joy. But hey, I do make them, they are good, and you can get yours right here, right now, along with the ePub version, which is my favorite. Also, there’s a whole lot of podcast audio coming your way from me in the next couple of weeks. You can watch me on Twitter, or subscribe to my podcast meta-feed, to learn about it all as it happens.

iOS Access for All Update Released

Posted in Access and Disability, Announcements, General Store, and New Media and Tech

I’m thrilled to announce that the new edition of my book, iOS Access for All, is ready and waiting for you right here. There you’ll find buy links, the table of contents, and many more words you can read. Get the ePub for $20. I’m really proud of this one, and there’s a bit more new material this time than last. That’s partly due to Apple’s interface changes, and partly because I added depth to several topics. In addition to a complete update for iOS 10, you’ll find 80 pages of completely new material. I’m scheduling some dates with a few…

Podcast Updates

Posted in General Store

I’ve been slow to update my podcast appearance feed. Honestly, I’m not certain how many people use it, but it’s easy for me to make the feed, so I do. Today’s updates feature three Maccessibility Roundtables, one iAccessVO (thanks for having me guys, even I share the show title with PornHub), and one Clockwise. Please enjoy, and let me know if you like the podcast feed. Shelly Brisbin Podcast Appearances RSS

HOT AND BOTHERED – The Films of 1932 Blogathon: American Madness

Posted in Classic Film

UPDATED: Please enjoy my very own Hot and Bothered Blogathon banner. Thanks, Theresa! Blogathons are a thing in the world of classic film writing. They’re great fun, and I read a lot of them. I admire writers who accept the challenge of crafting posts that fit a theme. So this is my first blogathon entry; a post about one of my favorite early Frank Capra films, American Madness. Thanks to Theresa of CineMaven’s Essays from the Couch, who is hosting today’s posts, and Aurora of Once Upon a Screen, who kicked things off yesterday. Go and read them all! If…

Noir City Austin #3

Posted in Classic Film

The third installment of the Film Noir Foundation’s (FNF) Noir City Austin filled my weekend. The Alamo Drafthouse’ downtown branch — specifically, Theater 1 — played host to two days and three nights of hard-boiled classics, including a few rarities and new restorations. I want to write about a couple of the films I saw, but let’s start with a bit of an introduction to the roadshow version of Noir City. Eddie Muller’s Film Noir Foundation has hosted the annual festival of dark films in San Francisco for the past fourteen years. It’s a big deal, in a historical theater,…
